FOBCS – Easter Fundraising

We have had around 70 “guess-the-name” entries for FOBCS’s Easter Hamper.

We are opening this up for children to choose an additional name (if they have already chosen one). Please send your child in with £1 if you wish for them to have a guess. They can then take this to Mrs. Lloyd at break or lunch.

A reminder that it is £1 for an entry – and the winning ticket will be drawn at Friday’s celebration assembly (09:00-09:30), which (as always) everyone is invited to join.

Uniform Update

Following the feedback from our proposed tweaks to the uniform (https://browncleeschool.org.uk/potential-uniform-options/), a number of parents have requested that we look for an alternative uniform supplier (i.e. away from Lads and Lasses) – due to a number of different issues parents have been having when purchasing uniform.

Taking this into consideration, we are holding fire on any of the proposed changes whilst we explore our options with this. However, no final decision has be made regarding what will happen. In the meantime, Lads and Lasses will continue as our uniform supplier – and we will update you on any changes to this as they happen.

Gujarati Patchwork

We have been studying Gujarati patchwork in our art lessons and from what we have seen we have developed some designs of our own. Over the last few days we have been finalising our designs and making patterns to follow. Today we started to sew our finished pieces together…..we can’t wait to see how they look when they are finished!

KS1 Cross Country Competition

Next Tuesday, we have a KS1 Cross Country Competition after school at Oldbury Wells.

Those that have asked for letters in school have been given one. However, all pupils in KS1 are able to join. The letter can be found here (KS1 Cross Country 2025).

Myself and the Bronze ambassadors will be at the event to help organise children ahead of their races.

Catering and Cleaning update

Just to let you know that the catering and cleaning teams at school are now under direct employment of the school – which will hopefully have number of benefits for use as a school.

We are continuing the existing menus until the end of term. After Easter, we have our new menus. These will be live on ParentPay at the end of this week. These menus will adapt and evolve as we try to see what works well. We are also planning on some other future developments – including more choice/options. Our School Council have already been exploring this withing school, and a questionnaire will be sent out to parents/carers next term.

Bollywood workshop!

Today we were very excited to have a Bollywood dance teacher working with us. The morning started with a dance workshop where we learnt not only the moves to a dance but also the symbolism of each of the moves. We then went on to find out how to wear a Sari, how to count to 10 in Hindi and what it is like in a Hindu Temple. I was very impressed with the information that the children shared during their discussions, that they had recalled from our topic work in class. What a fabulous morning – well done Dragonflies and thank you so much to Reena from Bollywood Dreams Dance Academy!

Easter Service – 7th April

Our Easter Service will be hosted at St. John’s the Baptist Church, Ditton Priors – led by Reverend Joe – on Monday 7th April at 14:00.

All members of the school commnity are invited to join us in this event.

No Celebration Assembly Tomorrow – 28.03.25

Unfortunately, there will be no celebration assembly tomorrow morning (28th March)

Dragonflies are having an Indian Dance Workshop in the morning – and, therefore, the hall will be in use for this from 09:00.

Shrewsbury Museum Trip

Yesterday, Grasshoppers went on their class trip to Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery. The children took part in a Great Fire of London workshop in the morning, led by our learning officer, Rose.

The children created a timeline of the events and dressed up as some of the key people, including Samuel Pepys, Thomas Farrinor, Thomas Bloodworth and King Charles II.

They took part in four activities: Using a quill and ink to write, as Samuel Pepys did in his diary. Making a pomander using herbs and spices, making leather goods by threading wool and strips of leather and constructing a large Tudor house, using wooden frames and making the walls by weaving thin canes between wooden poles.

We also did a treasure hunt to find precious items that people would have tried to save in the fire.

After lunch, we went on a guided walk around the town to look at the Tudor buildings. We looked out for pegs that joined the beams together and carpenters’ marks on the wooden beams. We saw hooks that shop owners would have hung their produce from and the decorative patterns that meant the owners of the building would have been rich. We looked at the names of the streets and worked out what might have been sold in the shops there. We also found some very narrow passages which showed us just how close the building were built and how the fire would have spread so easily.

We had a wonderful day, the children were so inquisitive and engaged and we learnt lots of new things.

Class Trip

On Monday, Grasshoppers have their class trip to Shrewsbury Museum.

Please can the children bring a coat as, in the afternoon, we will be doing a guided walk, around the town centre. There is a chance of light rain for Monday.

Please also remember a non spill water bottle and packed lunch, if they haven’t ordered one from school.

Many thanks.

Spring/Easter HAF programme

Please see below the Spring/Easter HAF programme being run by Shropshire Council.  Pupils in receipt of Benefits related Free School Meals will be bringing home a code to use which will allow you to book them onto the activities free of charge.

Many of the activities are also available for children not in receipt of Free School Meals for a small charge, there are further details to be found in the booklet.

Staying Safe Online – Weekly Post – 19.03.25

Here is this week’s Staying Safe Online post: Roblox.

This week’s post also comes with a podcast: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5ThQxfXIPA8Gmn2NzkVrjO?si=PVF_Wa8BS-KnP8wgL8YM9w

Here are the previous posts:

Fun at Lego Club

Tonight at Lego club children worked together to create a marble maze.

Having fun filming!

We have been exploring stop-frame animation this term using the i-motion app. It has been great fun developing our animations, which we based on a traditional story from India. We were very surprised at how many photographs we needed to take to make the characters look like they were moving effectively!

CCTV Installation

Due to an increase in rural crime and also the new neighbouring housing developments (which will increase the number of entry points to the school site), we have made the decision to install CCTV cameras so that we can monitor the site when not occupied.

Comic Relief – Friday 21st March 2025

We are looking to raise some money for Comic Relief. For this, the children can come into school in their own clothes (with something red). We are requesting donations for this event as it will be raising money for Comic Relief; however, the amount is entirely up to you.

As part of the day, children can also bring in their own joke – written on piece of paper with their name on. The joke doesn’t have to be an original one. Teachers will be picking their top 20 jokes – which will be shared in assembly and the top joke (by volume of laughter it generates) winning a prize! This year, we would like to invite any parents, carers, grandparents etc. to join us for this assembly at 2:30pm. This will be replacing our usually celebration assembly for the week.

In addition to our own fundraising, we are also helping the BBC Radio Shropshire Breakfast show with their own fundraising event – which involves pushing a 5ft nose over Shropshire’s three largest hills (Stiperstones, Titterstone Clee and Brown Clee). Before they start the last leg (Brown Clee), they will be visiting the school and beginning their push from the school playground, where the children will cheer them on. This will be taking place the day before (on Thursday 20th March).

Staff Changes Next Year

Just a (very early) update on some changes that will take place with our staff ahead of next academic year.

Mrs. Parker, who currently teaches Scorpions, is expecting her second child. She is hoping to continue working at Brown Clee up until the end of the academic year (i.e. July), but this will be close to her due date.

Mrs. Brescianini, who currently teaches in Grasshoppers on Fridays, is going to be spending some more time working for her family business – so will be also leaving us at the end of this academic year (i.e. July).

This will mean there may be some changes to class structures. We will keep you updated on this as it progresses, and we have more specific information on plans and appointments.

Reading in Dragonflies

Over the past couple of months we have been developing the reading areas in our classroom. In discussion with the children, the books have been re-organised and four quiet areas have  been established with new lighting, cosy rugs and cushions. The children have been enjoying sharing books with their friends and taking responsibility for keeping the areas clean and tidy.

Break/Lunch Time Changes

We are exploring in school how we can improve the overall experience of play at break and lunch.

This initially started as merging KS1 and KS2 together for break and some investment into specific activities (e.g. table tennis table and large-scale Connect 4) as well as providing a Y6-led activity at morning break for KS1 and a competitive activity during lunch for KS2.

This year, we are looking at how we can further enhance this experience. Following the heads of school council visiting a school (that have begun implementing a more ambitious approach to play), we are currently investigating some changes. One of this has been the addition of music to a section of the playground. Our sports leaders have also begun getting some of the scooters/go karts out so that KS1 pupils can play with these at breaktime.

This week, we are going to try out another idea from the school council – which is to lengthen break time (from 15 minutes to 30 minutes) and shorten lunch break (from 60 minutes to 45 minutes). This will mean that the children will still get the same amount of “break” but spread differently. KS1 will still get their usual afternoon break.

We will be soon exploring way in which we can improve the school grounds/space to enable a broader range of activities at break and lunch (potentially including nature area, quiet reading area, construction area, creative area – along with other ideas). If anyone has any particular skill sets / resources that could help us with any of these, it would be massively appreciated.

FOBCS will soon be planning a playground tidy up. Again, any volunteers for this would be really appreciated.

Co-opted Governor Position

We have a couple of co-opted Governing positions available at school.

A co-opted governor is any person who, in the opinion of the governing body, have skills that could contribute towards the effective governance of the school.

This person does not have to be parent/carer (but can be).

If you know anybody that would be interested in joining the governing body – and could bring a particular skill set – if you/they could get in contact with the school (admin@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk), it would be greatly appreciated.

Further info on school governance can be found here: https://next.shropshire.gov.uk/school-governors/volunteer-as-a-governor/
