It is important you inform us of any medical condition which might affect your child’s education or for which emergency aid may be necessary e.g. asthma, epilepsy.
Policy for Illness/ Medicines in School
School must be contacted in person, by phone or email on the first day of illness. It is our procedure that if we haven’t heard anything by 11.00 am we will endeavour to make contact to establish why a child is absent.
If a child is taken ill in school, it is essential that we are able to contact the child’s parents/carers immediately. It is therefore very important that an updated Emergency Contact form is in school. If you change your mobile number or contact details please do let us know.
If, in the judgement of the school, a child requires hospital treatment then every effort will be made to contact parents/carers immediately. If parents/carers cannot accompany a child to hospital, a member of staff will take them and remain with the child until such time as the parents/carers can get there.
There are fully trained first aiders in school and all support staff have basic first aid training.
In general, medicines, other than asthmatic inhalers, should not need to be given at school. If medicines need to be administered in school then please hand them in at the Office and complete a form allowing us to administer medicine to your child. We have a policy for the administering of medicine to pupils.
Medicine consent form
Asthmatic children will have access to their inhalers at all times. These should be named and handed to the class teacher. When children are not on the premises e.g. on school outings and visits, inhalers will be kept by the staff who are accompanying them so that children can self-administer when necessary.
Children who have specific medical needs may have an individual care plan. Training and any administration of care is kept up to date and held centrally in the staffroom.
During the school year, the school nurse and dentist visit to carry out routine inspections. These include vision, hearing tests and dental checks.
Hair inspections are not carried out in school, so it is the parents/carers duty to examine their child’s hair regularly. Please inform the school if your child becomes infected with head lice, worms or any other contagious illness.
