Safe Operating Procedures for opening in September

Good afternoon all,
We have been working really hard this week to plan and prepare for a safe opening of school for everyone in September.  As part of that process we have written a series of Safe Operating Procedures which will work alongside our action plan and risk assessment.  You can find them on the website at Key Info, Policies – as well as below.
These are our starting point for September – clearly things could change between now and then, and things could also evolve after we have opened, but I feel it is really important to continue to be open and transparent with all the procedures that we are putting into place, to ensure that Brown Clee School is as safe as it possibly can be for all pupils, families and staff.
I will be sending a letter out on Monday with further detailed information, but these Safe Operating Procedures will give you an oversight, and I don’t want to overload parents with sending everything out at once.
In September, the key control measure for reducing the risk of transmitting coronavirus, as well as ensuring good hygiene measures, is to keep the classes apart from each other in order to reduce mixing.  Therefore the Start and End of the Day are high risk times due to the numbers of children and adults arriving at and leaving school.  We have therefore had to stagger the start and end of day times.  Please read the attached Start and End of Day Procedures really carefully – as for these to work we really do need your support and co-operation.
Also, again we are encouraging as many people as possible to walk or drive – as the use of school transport increases the risk of mixing classes.  We also need to liaise with Shropshire Transport as to the numbers and timings, so we kindly ask that parents let us know about this as soon as possible.
We are still planning how we can safely operate Wrap Around Care before and after school, as again, we will need to keep classes apart, and therefore it will need to be in the hall and we will have to limit numbers.  We are asking that parents only book Care Club if they absolutely desperately need it as if we are over-subscribed we might have to prioritise.
We will be letting parents know how Care Club bookings and procedures will work as soon as they are finalised – and we are thinking it will have to be bookings, made a week in advance, as a minimum.
Please bear with us as we share the information, we feel it is important that families know that we are doing everything we can to ensure everyone’s safety, and our principles are ‘Protect, Care, Teach’.
If anyone has any questions, worries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me – I have been in school regularly since March, and daily since 1st June, and I feel safe, as do the staff and children currently in school. We all want to ensure that we do our very best for our school community and will work with you to ensure that our children can all start school happily and safely.

Planning for September – School Transport

We are in the process of planning for September, and it would be really helpful to know if any parents absolutely do need school transport.
Our main control measure is keeping children in their class groups, or ‘bubble’ as the government refers to it – and therefore the use of school transport could compromise these bubbles.
We would appreciate if where possibly, children are driven or walk to school, but also understand that for some parents, school transport might be an absolute necessity.
Once we have these numbers we can then inform Shropshire Transport, who we are hoping can do their best to maintain the security of class groups.
If you could let us know by next Friday (10th July) at the latest, that would be really helpful!

Full School Opening in September

Good afternoon,

We have had the official guidance today on the measures needed to open the school in September, and we will be publishing all our Safe Operating Procedures and Action Plan on Monday, so that parents can be fully aware of all the measures we will be taking to ensure the safety of all children, families and staff in the current situation.

Having received the guidance, we are pleased to say that we will be able to offer wrap around care to parents who absolutely need it.  We will be encouraging parents to try and make other arrangements wherever possible, as with all the children back in school, children will be unable to socially distance and the key control measure will be the non-mixing of the class groups (the ‘bubble’ concept).

The wrap around care will take place in the hall, and in-line with the guidance we will have to ‘segment’ the hall to keep children in different classes apart – the ‘bubble’ concept.  This will limit the number of children that we can cater for.

Therefore, in order to allow us to plan effectively, and to enable us to provide this service for the families that absolutely do need it, we kindly ask that if at all possible, those parents who will need child care on a regular basis, to let us know by the end of next week what your wrap around care needs in September are likely to be. We appreciate that things may change, but this will allow us to work out the class Child Care segment size, which in turn will allow us to help parents out as much as possible.

Once we have this information, we can then work out maximum numbers for each Child Care Class segment, and this should help parents to plan in September.

The booking system will also need to change, due to the limits of numbers, and we will let parents know what this is later.

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

Good Morning Brown Clee!

We have been thinking of courage and self belief, and reflecting on our own uniqueness and how we should be proud of who we are!  Today I want to take you back in time to 1838, September the 7th to be precise, to the Farne Islands just off the coast of Northumberland,  where a young girl called Grace Darling lived with her family in a lighthouse.

Grace and her father saved 9 lives that night, and Grace received many awards for her bravery, as well as becoming famous.  But she didn’t do it for an award of fame and fortune – why do you think she did it?   She wasn’t worried for herself, she was just determined to save the shipwrecked sailors.

Grace was only 22 years old – she didn’t think she was anyone special, she was just the lighthouse keeper’s daughter – but one stormy night she did something exceptionally brave and heroic, something that she has been remembered for ever since…

I think this story just shows what you can achieve if you are brave and determined.  It doesn’t have to be saving lives, it could be as simple as over coming a fear of snakes, or riding a bicycle without stabilisers.  Being brave and courageous comes in many forms – and we are all have the potential to be as heroic as Grace Darling.

Prayer of the Day

As we remember Grace Darling and her father,
we think of those today who brave frightening seas to help and rescue others.
May they be given the courage and wisdom they need in facing danger.
Lord, hear our prayer.
Amen.

Challenge 4: To see how many times we can complete a walk over the Brown Clee before the end of the summer term

Archie’s Kenyan Safari Challenge…Next Week!

We are getting closer to the 6th July, when we start Archie’s Kenyan Safari challenge, and travel the entire border of Kenya, a massive 2,141 miles in just 7 days!

We need everyone to take part….children, parents, brothers and sisters, staff and governors! We need everyone to do some walking, running, cycling, horse riding, swimming, and clock up the miles to raise money to support our school charity, the Karibuni Children.

We have already raised £492.50 but we want to get to £2141….a pound for every mile….so please help support us too…https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/BrownCleeSchool

News of the challenge has even reached the communities that we are supporting in Kenya, as we have received this message from George, a social worker at the project in Tharaka….

“I appreciate the efforts of Archie. Miss Sue Relph thank you very much for raising this boy and supporting his ambitions of touching lives. Both you and the boy is an enough lesson for the world to learn. That touching lives require a willing heart and not material wealth. I have liked your organisational strategy as an administrator. The contribution of Brown Clee C.E. Primary school will make a huge impact to the vulnerable children in Kenya. They feel excited on the mention of your names. Plan through Joy and pay a visit to see things for yourself if an opportunity comes. You will confirm that your contribution touched needy children and made a recommendable change. Congratulations Archie, Miss Sue and the entire Brown Clee C.E. Primary School. Looking forward to meeting at God’s appointed time.”

So come on everyone in the Brown Clee Team, get yourselves warmed up for next week’s challenge….I know we can do it!

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

Good Morning Brown Clee!

This week we have started to think about self-belief, and having the courage to be proud of who we are – no matter what our differences are!  We are all unique, even if you are twins – there will still be things that make you different.

There is a lovely picture by Charlie Macksey, that might make you think about yourself – and what being you means….

If you were to discover you, can you think of 3 things that would you different from everyone else? …  It could be physical (what you look like!), or your favourite things, or hobbies, or family structure, your dream and hope – absolutely anything – as differences come in so many different forms!

For me – if I had to pick 3 things that make me, ME…….I’d choose

  1. Having a wonderful daughter who is as much a friend as a daughter
  2. Having a secret aspiration that I would love to travel into space and be able to look down on the earth.
  3. Being tall!

What would your 3 things be?

…..there are 96 children at Brown Clee School, and if you all answered I am fairly sure that you would all have given very different answers!  And you should all be proud of those differences!

Prayer of the Day

Dear Lord,
Thank you that we are all unique and different, and thank you that we are precious to you.
Please help us to show other people that we value them and their uniqueness, too.
Thank you for the variety of gifts, abilities and personalities in this school.
Please help us to be people who always look for the best in each other.
Amen.

September planning: School Transport

Today we have emailed a letter to parents of children who use or are entitled to school transport to help us with our planning for September. It is important that we get a reply by Friday 10th July, so please check your emails. If you haven’t received it please let us know and we will resend.

Tuesday’s activities

It has been so lovely to see all the letters that you have been sending in! You have done such a fantastic job! Also, it has been great to see how hard you are working on all of the other activities at home – well done Class 3!

I know that as well as reading The Golden Acorn, a lot of you have been busy reading other books of your own at home. It was a lovely treat to receive a video of Harry reading his favourite book, Peter Rabbit. You can see Harry’s video by clicking on this link:

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

Good Morning Brown Clee!

Yesterday we learnt about the inpirational Ezra Frech, a young boy born with physical disabilities, but as a result of his outstanding courage and self-belief is an inspiration to us all.

What is Self Belief?  We might all have a different idea or definition.  In the Oxford dictionary it says that ‘Self Belief is having confidence in oneself”.  It can be difficult to have ‘confidence in oneself’ all the time – especially if you are trying something new and for the first time, or if you go somewhere new, like starting a new school, or visiting new people.  Can you think of any other examples when it might be difficult to believe in yourself?  I know I found it hard to believe that I would be able to swim in the deep end when I was young, as I was so scared about being out of my depth.  I didn’t believe that I could swim without armbands – but guess what – I could!

Here is a short film called ‘Piper’ about a hungry, young sandpiper hatchling who ventures from her nest for the first time to dig for food by the shoreline. The only problem is, the food is buried beneath the sand where scary waves roll up onto the shore.  Enjoy and have a think about how much self-belief does Piper have at the beginning – what is she scared of?  What changes and why?

Poor Piper – she was so hungry, yet so scared of the sea and didn’t really believe in herself, didn’t believe that she could catch food herself – until she watched the hermit crabs, and learnt from them.  She then discovered the wonderful underwater world – and after practice and trial and error, suddenly she was an amazing shell catcher!

What message have you learn from this?  Is there anything that you are finding difficult or challenging today, that with a little more self-belief, you might be able to overcome?

Enjoy this cheerful song, that reminds us that it doesn’t matter what the weather, sing along and smile!

https://youtu.be/73_y1ESHxqI

We also need to sing happy birthday to Millie and Poppy in Class 1, as today they are celebrating their 5th Birthday! Happy Birthday girls!

Prayer of the Day

Thank you, Lord,
that you promise to be with us always.
Thank you for the new beginnings
you give to us in our lives.
Help us to make the most of them,
to learn from them
and grow through them.
Help us to trust you as we step out into the future.
Amen.
