Afternoon Update

I hope everyone is doing well and thank you for all the pictures you have been sending in – they’ve been fantastic. Also, the mature approach towards your learning a lot of you have shown by regularly asking questions when you’re unsure of a question has been absolutely wonderful!

Remember, you don’t have to just send me in the work I’ve set. If you’ve been doing anything else interesting, send it in. I’m sure everyone else would love to see. We could also do with some more running/walking/cycling distances – even if it’s just running some laps around your garden. We’ve had another 10 miles towards out target, so we are 350 miles away from arriving back to Norway!

Have a look at some of the things sent in over the past couple of day.

Ben has made his own tray:

Here’s Maisie’s news report:

Can Class 1 Get Back From Shrewsbury?

We have only 2 more days until the end of term. We still have 11 more miles to get back to Ditton Priors from Shrewsbury. If we manage to do it, we will have (collectively) been to Charles Darwin’s birthplace and back 10 times. Come on Class 1 we can do it!

Next term our topic is ‘On The Beach.’ I would be grateful for any ideas for our next running challenge!

9 children didn’t walk on Tuesday.

Request for Feedback from Parents

Dear Parents,

We are hoping that you are all well, and that the activities/tasks that teachers have been setting have helped you throughout the past week and a half.  There are a number of reasons for setting these activities, including helping to keep your children active and with a routine, maintaining and consolidating on their learning so far, but possibly most importantly of all, as a means for teachers and children to keep in touch and for the school community to still see each other and share in what they are doing!

We are getting close to the Easter holidays (2 days to go!) and the teachers will be having a well-deserved rest! We have never done remote teaching before, and we would very much appreciate your feedback.  So could you please email admin@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk with your thoughts/comments. Is there too much or too little? Is the balance of subjects ok? Is there anything that you would like to change? I can’t guarantee we will be able to respond to all suggestions or wishes – but we are here to help – so please let us know your thoughts by Friday so we can take them on board for after Easter! Thank you!

Running Challenge Update – 31 miles left!

Sam, Archie R and Mary have added to the running total.

Come on Class 2, we only have 31 miles left to go!!!

Reflection Time

Theme: COMPASSION

We have been thinking about kindness this week, and another word with a similar meaning is COMPASSION.  This has been our value of the half term whilst in school this Spring.  There is a well known Bible parable that demonstrates compassion – The Good Samaritan.  Here is a puppet version of the story for you to watch.  Have a think about what you would do if you saw someone in difficulties?  Would you be like the Samaritan?  Click the picture to go to the video.

Prayer of the Day

Dear God,

At home, at school, at work and play,

not just today, but every day,

may I care for myself and others too,

and lend a hand cheerfully when it is right to do.

Amen.

Class 4 – Activities at home – 01.04.20

Before you start today, check out yesterday’s answers.

As always, you don’t have to do these activities at a set time or in a set order – that’s all up to you. Also, you don’t have to be doing work all day! Feel free to send in some pictures of videos of some of the other things you have been doing at home.

There will be 4 hive games today, which will start slightly later than usual:

Game 1 (slightly easier) – 1:30pm – 218160
Game 2 (slightly harder) – 1:35pm – 567384
Game 3 (hard) – 1:40pm – 477737
Game 4 (v. hard) – 1:45pm – 536130

Today’s games will be open to Class 3 again, and remember, anyone to beat Miss Relph (if she’s playing) will win a prize!  (I‘ll be there!)

Problems of the day

Day-8-Wednesday-1st-April2020

Bar Models

Questions 1 and 2 with bars
Questions 3 and 4 with bars

Challenge of the day

See how many times you can fold a piece of A4 paper in half.

What do you notice about the thickness of the piece of paper when you fold it each time?

If a piece of A4 paper is 0.1mm thick, how thick would it be after you have folded it in half 6 times?

Try seeing how many times you can fold a smaller piece of paper; is it easier or harder?

Do you think you could fold a larger piece of paper more or less times?

The investigation above should help you to solve this problem:

English

Sentence / Fragment / Run-on

1.) When you go.
2.) There must be at least 300 people in the forest, I don’t think we should go in.
3.) My dogs’ food always ends up on the floor.
4.) Until you reach level 17, you cannot go this way.
5.) When the door closes, you have 55 seconds to find a way to escape.
6.) I need help, this question is way too hard.
7.) The cat was angry, the dog had eaten its dinner.
8.) I need help because this question is way too hard.
9.) Since you’ve got more money, you can buy this!
10.) Suddenly, the door opened, a man appeared.

Writing

Your writing task for English over the next few days will be very purposeful.

With the on-going isolating we are all having to do, it would be nice if as many of you as possible could write a letter to the residents at the care home.

Try and plan your letter carefully (think particularly about what you want to put in each paragraph). Remember, the first paragraph should introduce why you are writing (to see how they are doing).

As well as asking them questions about how they are doing, and how things might be different for them during these times.

You may choose to then talk about things you have done since school closed, what you like and dislike about it, what you’re looking forward to doing when it’s over

Ideally, I would aim for about one page of A4 for your letter.

If possible, please complete your letter on Word (or a similar word processing program) – as I will need to email them onto the care home.

If you have any questions about what to include in your letter or how to set it out, then feel free to email me.

History / Geography

The Vikings invaded Britain between the end of the 8th Century (793) and midway through the 11th Century (1066). When the Vikings began invading Britain, the Anglo-Saxons had already divided Britain into 7 kingdoms – England didn’t exist as a country at this point (neither did Scotland and Wales).

Try and label this map with which kingdom is which. You can research this if you’re not sure. Be careful Britain has been divide into more than 7 parts. The regions which would later become Wales and Scotland had their own separate kingdoms (e.g. The Kingdom of Powys later became part of Wales whilst Pictland and Strathclyde later became parts of Scotland).

These 7 kingdoms eventually became the Kingdom of England (in the 10th Century). In the 18th Century, the Kingdom of England later “united” with the Kingdoms of Scotland and Wales to form the “United Kingdom of Great Britain” and in the 19th Century formed the “United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”.

PDF 7 Kingdoms

Do any of these Kingdoms sound familiar to you? Are any of the their names still used today?

Keep on sending in your pictures so they can be shared on the website, and I hope you’re all well – and not too bored yet.

Problems of the day

Bar Models

Challenge of the day

I should have made it clearer in the question: the containers have no measurements along the sides so you can’t accurately measure out halves, thirds, quarter etc.

This problem has a few solutions – here’s mine:

  • Fill the 3L container from water source
    [3 litres in 3L container]
  • Pour the 3 litres from the 3L container into the 5L container
    [3 litres in 5L container]
  • Refill the 3L container from the water source
    [3 litres in both containers]
  • Fill the 5L container from the 3L container – as there are 3 litres already in the 5L container, you will end up pouring 2 litres from 3L container into the 5L
[5 litres in 5L container and 1 litre in 3L container]
  • Empty 5 litres from 5L container back to water source
[1 litre in the 3L container]
  • Pour the 1 litre from the 3L container into the 5L container
[1 litre in the 5L container]
  • Refill the 3L container from the water source
[1 litre in the 5L container and 3 litres in the 3L container]
  • Finally, pour the 3 litres from the 3L container into 5L (which already has 1 litre in it)
[4 litres in the 5L container!]

Here’s a picture showing this:

Sentence / Fragment / Run-on

1.) Sentence
2.) Sentence
3.) Fragment (relative clause – it would be a question if it had a question mark)
4.) Run-on
5.) Fragment (subordinate clause)
6.) Sentence
7.) Run-on
8.) Sentence
9.) Run-on
10.) Fragment (a very long noun phrase)

Daily Reflection

Theme: KINDNESS

Yesterday we reflected on why The Boy wanted to be kind when he grew up. Today I have a short video to share, entitled ‘Colour Your World with Kindness’.

COLOUR YOUR WORLD WITH KINDNESS

Watch the video and think what colours would you choose to colour your world if you had a choice?  What acts of kindness could you do today to add some colour at home? Can you add some colour to your family through acts of kindness such as setting the table for dinner, tidying your room or even just giving your parents a hug!?  Why not try and let me know what happens when your colour with kindness by emailing admin@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk

Prayer of the Day

Dear God,
Thank you that we can be kind to one another.
Thank you for the teachers and families who teach us why we need to be kind.
Thank you, God, for the kindness and love that you show us.
Please help us to forgive our friends for any fallings-out.
Please help us always to give people a second chance.
Please help us to say sorry and start again.
Amen.
