Support for Ukraine

We want to say a massive thank you for the overwhelmingly generous donations of cake and money that we have had in to school this morning!  Here are the cakes…

Thank you to The Willows Cafe for also donating some delicious looking biscuits!

Everyone has also made a great effort with wearing something blue and/or yellow – Lily even made some yellow and blue ribbons for the staff – thank you!

We have even had Maisie join in from home!

So far you have donated £519 – which is phenomenal!  We are going to continue to collect donations for Ukraine up to next Friday, 18th March – and we are sending all money raised to the Disaster Emergency Charity – which works with 15 humanitarian charities and will ensure funds go straight to where it is needed

Children are going to have opportunity to enjoy cake today, but because there are so many cakes, they will also be outside at the end of the day for anyone who hasn’t had the opportunity to donate yet, and they will also be available after Well Done Assembly tomorrow.  Children will also get to enjoy more cake tomorrow, and if there are any left will be given the chance to take some home at the end of the day!

THANK YOU and well done to Ollie and Will R for coming up with the idea in the first place!!!  It would be great if we could continue with raising more to support the Ukrainian families!

Cakes and Wear Something Blue and/or Yellow Day – tomorrow – Thursday 10th March!

Don’t forget to send in donations and cakes to help support the Ukrainian refugees tomorrow – as well as wear one thing blue and/or yellow with your uniform!  We want to show our compassion

Help for Ukrainian Refugees – Wear something Yellow/Blue and Bring a Cake Day – Thursday 10th March.

Ollie and Will from the Scorpions approached me on Friday to say they wished to organise something to help support the refugees from Ukraine.  They have come up with the idea of children being able to wear something blue and/or yellow (the colours of the Ukrainian flag) and to hold a cake sale – but a cake sale with a difference – in that children bring cakes in to ‘sell’ – but the purchase cost is simply a donation – so not fixed cost!

The children in the Scorpions had discussed the Ukraine crisis during their R.E lesson, and appreciate the complexities.  Our focus is going to very much be on the fact that the conflict has meant that more than a million people have already fled their home and have had to leave their belongings behind and are now in need of food, shelter, clothes and medication.

Please help us to do our bit!

We will continue to collect any donations up to Friday 18th March.

SIAMS Inspection – Wednesday 9th March

We have been notified that our SIAMs Inspection is being held on Wednesday this week (9th March).

SIAMS stands for the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools. All Church of England Schools receive a Section 48 Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) in addition to the regular Section 5 Ofsted inspection.  These inspections take place on a five year cycle.

The Inspection focuses on one key question: How effective is the school’s distinctive Christian vision, established and promoted by leadership at all levels (including governors), in enabling pupils and adults to flourish?

This question is evaluated through seven strands:

  • Strand 1: Vision and Leadership
  • Strand 2: Wisdom, Knowledge and Skills
  • Strand 3: Character Development: Hope, Aspiration and Courageous Advocacy
  • Strand 4: Community and Living Well Together
  • Strand 5: Dignity and Respect
  • Strand 6: The impact of collective worship
  • Strand 7: The effectiveness of religious education

We are very proud of being a Church of England school and feel that we have got lots to celebrate. As parents, you are important partners in helping us to help children flourish. A group of parents are meeting with the Inspector on the day to share their thoughts – unfortunately we are limited on numbers for this group, however, if you wish your comments to be included, please feel free to send in a report, either by email or letter.

How to support Ukrainian refugees

Following Will & Ollie’s request to support the Ukrainian refugees, we’ve found this link. Currently, financial support appears to be more meaningful, and can make most impact…and this looks like a good way to get the support to the right place.

Humanitarian Appeal

Watch this space for news on upcoming event to raise funds to support this appeal, led by Will and Ollie!

Supporting Ukraine

We are keen to support the Ukrainian refugees in a way that children can be involved in a meaningful way such as how we support the Karibuni Children.  But this is going to take a bit of research and preparation.  In the meantime we are aware that there are some local support organisations are providing help and have been given the following information for a collection in Bridgnorth this weekend:-

Nut Free School

We would like to remind parents that we are a nut free school as we have a pupil with a serious nut allergy.  This includes ALL nuts, and foods with nuts in them such as nutella, biscuits, snack bars etc.  Can parents please ensure that children’s packed lunches do not contain any food items with nuts in.

Booking School Lunches

Please could we remind parents and carers of the importance of booking school dinners a minimum of 48 hours in advance via ParentPay. This allows the school kitchen to ensure that enough food has been cooked and the children are served their preferred meal. It is possible to book meals up until the end of this term. If you do not have the ParentPay Activation code for your child, please contact the school office who will arrange for this to be sent to you.

Thank you in advance for your co-operation.

2nd Spring Half Term – Updates

We hope you had a restful and relaxing half term, even with the rather windy, wet weather!  There are many signs of Spring around – lambs, daffodils, blossom, longer and lighter days – that all signify hope of brighter days ahead!

We are looking forwards to welcoming the children back on Wednesday to another busy, happy term full of learning and thought it would be helpful to share some information and reminders:-

Covid19: As the government has now updated it’s guidance we have reviewed our Covid19 Risk Assessment and as a result there are the following changes:-

  • There is no longer a need for a one way system at drop-off or collection.  We are still asking children to access school independently from the gate at the main entrance, as before, as this has worked very successfully in allowing a smooth start to the day.  At the end of the day, parents access and leave the infant playground from this gate – the top-gate will now be locked.
  • There is no longer a legal requirement for people with COVID19 to self-isolate, however if you have any of the main symptoms of COVID19 or a positive test result, the public health advice is to stay at home and avoid contact with other people.  The new government guidance can be found here: COVID19: People with Covid19 and their contacts.
  • If your child has symptoms of Covid or has tested positive then they need to stay at home and follow the following guidance:-Graphic showing how to safely return to your normal routine before 10 daysIf you are unable to access LFTs to carry out the day 5 and 6 tests, then we ask that children stay at home for 5 days to mitigate infection, and they can return on day 6 if they are well and no longer have symptoms.
  • Again, we ask for your understanding and support – it is tricky – and all we can do as a school is follow the guidance given and be consistent. We appreciate that the symptoms of Covid19 are very similar to other ailments, and also that LFTS are no longer being freely available.
  • Visitors to school: We can now remove the need to restrict visits to essential visits only. However we ask that all visitors, including parents and governors, only do so if they are clear of Covid19 symptoms and are not living in the same household as someone who has tested positive for Covid19.

Well Done Assemblies: We will continue to hold our Friday Well Done Assemblies in the school hall, and as from Friday 11th March we are delighted to be able to welcome parents, family and friends back to join us celebrate the achievements of the week. Please note the above requirements for visitors to school.

Ukraine: I am sure that many of you will be following the events in Ukraine, and we are aware that children may well have their own questions or concerns. The Diocese of Hereford have shared this prayer reflection video so that we can share our thoughts and prayer for the people of Ukraine…

We are also looking into how we can support Ukrainian children and families who have had to leave their homes – we would prefer to be able to support practically, as we support our school charity, Karibuni Children – and it is early days at the moment, but we will keep you informed.

School moving to Remote Learning – Friday 18th February

We are having to move the school to remote learning procedures tomorrow as a result of operational issues due to Covid19.  We apologise for any inconvenience that this might cause but we have considered all options and this is the only alternative to actually closing.
I have attached the Remote Learning Policy to remind parents how this works:  Fireflies will use Tapestry, Grasshoppers and Dragonflies will have work posted on the website or emailled, and Scorpions will use Seesaw.  Scorpions will be given their log in details today in case they have been lost.
Due to staff illness Dragonflies will have work set, but we are unable to offer feedback or responses throughout the day as we would normally.
We are sorry that we are having to end the half term like this, but we hope that the week’s holiday will act as a bit of a firebreak.
We have been liaising with Public Health Shropshire, and do ask that you continue to test with LFTS as per the guidance if you have been contacted as a Close Contact, and let us know of any positive test results.  We will monitor the Admin email throughout the half term break.

Football Club – CANCELLED

Please note that this Friday’s Football Club is cancelled.  Apologies for any inconvenience.

Considerate Parking

We would like to kindly ask that parents do NOT park on the grassy area at the end of the row of houses on Station Rd.  This has been turned into a messy quagmire due to large vehicles parking on it.  Please park considerately and courteously.

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

Good Morning Brown Clee!

We have been thinking about self control recently – and yesterday we talked about how important it is that we THINK before we speak or act at playtimes in particularly – as those are the times that we are making our own choices with less structure.  I have asked you to think of ideas/games/suggestions as to how we can improve playtimes and we will talk about this in Wednesday’s assembly.

Today I thought we could reflect on our Christian value of this half term – FRIENDSHIP – and after all our discussions and learning, see if we can summarise what makes a good friend!  So we are going to look at each letter and see what you can come up with – I’ll start you off with the…

Letter F alphabet made from zinnia flower ABC concept type as logo.Typography design with clipping path

F is for FAITHFUL – as friends are always loyal and true – they see the best in you and stay by yourside, even when things are difficult.

Now over to you!

R is for…..

I is for…..

E is for….

N is for…

D is for….

S is for…

H is for…

I is for….

P is for…..

So now we all know and appreciate what makes a good friend – and as a result, we also know how we can be good friends to everyone!

In the Bible there are lots of stories and recounts about good friends – today I am going to share the story from The New Testament Book of Luke, about 4 friends who ask Jesus for help.

Have a think about the story – can you share how these men demonstrated friendship?

Let’s take a quiet moment of reflection – can you think of some examples of when you have been a good friend – when you have put someone else first….

Prayer of the Day

Dear God

We thank you for our friends and for the happy times we share with them. Help us to be a good friend to them. Teach us how to play fairly and to share. Help us to recognize loneliness in others and show friendliness towards them. We know that you are our friend and will be with us always.

Amen.

Art in Dragonflies

We have been looking at the work of landscape artist William Heaton Cooper.  We have learned about using one point perspective in our drawing and have used colour to add perspective to our paintings. We have learned that we can use lighter to darker shades to show perspective.

We laid our paintings out and had a critique session. We discussed the use of colour and shared our observations with each other.

‘Animal Man’ Visit

Yesterday afternoon, the Grasshoppers had a visit from Simon, from Corner Exotics. We all learnt so much about the world and the animals that live in it. In particular, those from Australia and those animals with similar adaptations.

It was a wonderful experience and the children were very enthusiastic about touching and holding a variety of animals.

A blue tongued skink, carpet python, black ring-neck snake, boa constrictor, Madagascar cockroach, pygmy hedgehog, chinchilla, scorpion, giant spiny stick insect, Avicularia tarantula, salmon pink bird-eater tarantula, Honduran curly haired tarantula, Australian green tree frog, African bullfrog, Horsefield tortoise and an East Australian bearded dragon.

We will be exploring some of the issues that Simon talked about and researching some of the animals further, in the classroom.

I think the photographs show how much the children enjoyed the visit!

Half Term Dates Reminder

We thought it would be helpful to remind you that the last day of this half term is Friday  18th February.  Children return to school on Wednesday 2nd March (28th February and 1st March are PD Days).

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

Good Morning Brown Clee!

This week we have been thinking about Self Control as a follow on from our focus on THINK before you speak, and linking to this we have learnt about the Fruit of the Spirit. We learnt that Paul wrote in his letter to the Galatians, to help them to understand that the fruits of the Holy Spirit are the good habits, the virtues, the good deeds that come from living as a child of God.

Can you remember what the Fruits of the Spirit are?….

We talked about how fruit grows and changes, and then reflected on how we change and grow…

Have a watch and listen to this video from the Pace Trust, about how we change and grow – on the inside!  Have a think as you watch about how you have changed – and how you want to change and grow in the future – what sort of person do you want to be…..what habits are you going to grow?

Have a think now about what bad habits you might have …. how could you change and turn them into good habits?  How can you develop the fruit of the spirit in yourself so that you can grow love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, kindness, faithfulness, goodness and self-control?

Let’s take a silent moment to reflect – what sort of person do you want to be?  What can you do to grown into that person?

Prayer of the Day

Dear God,
Thank you for the beauty of the world around us and for the lessons that we can learn from nature.
Please help us to develop good qualities in our lives.
Help us to grow in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Help us to treat others with respect.
Amen.

Tag Rugby – Swancote – Pick-up time

Just a quick clarification message for those children attending next week’s tag rugby competition: they will need to be picked up at 4pm from Swancote (BRFC).

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

Good Morning Brown Clee!

We have been thinking about THINKing before we speak and learning about the importance of Self Control recently – understanding that we are all responsible for our actions and words.

Today we are going to think about fruit – because there is a connection between self-control and fruit – let’s find out why!

First of all –  what is fruit?  Can you name some examples?…..

I wonder if you can describe how a fruit tree might look as it moves though the seasons of the year? Have a watch of this video showing the development of a plum from tiny shoot to fully-ripened fruit!

Now consider what conditions are needed for trees to grow and produce fruit like this?

The four main requirements are enough light, enough water, nutritious soil and favourable temperatures. If these conditions are present, a tree should grow through the seasons and produce fruit in the summer or autumn.

Fruit is mentioned in The Bible but this is a different type of fruit. In The Bible there was a man called Paul  – he was one of the early leaders in the Christian Church and he wrote letters to several of the early churches to encourage them and to teach them more about Jesus. One of these letters was to a church in a place called Galatia, which would be in modern-day Turkey. In this letter, Paul wrote, ‘the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.’

When Paul talks about fruit here, he doesn’t mean fruit growing on a tree, which might be tasty to eat; he means good qualities or characteristics that we can see in people’s lives…..

As you think about these qualities have a moment to reflect on these questions…

What kind of people do you like to spend time with?
Do you think that these are all good qualities for a person to have? Why/why not?
Do you find it hard to show some of these qualities in your life? Why/why not?

Most people would agree that love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control are all good qualities to have in our lives. However, they are not always easy qualities to develop.

Paul describes all these qualities as ‘the fruit of the Spirit’. Christians believe that these qualities, or ‘fruit’, will develop in people’s lives as they get to know God better. They believe that this happens by spending time learning about the Bible, praying and asking God to help them to live in this way. Christians believe that God sends his Holy Spirit to live in people’s lives. This changes them on the inside and helps these qualities to develop within their lives.

Let’s take a moment now to reflect – remember  what fruit trees need to produce fruit – light, water, nutrients in the soil and temperature. When we look at fruit trees in the spring, they may all appear very similar. However, in the summer and autumn, the amount and quality of the fruit that they produce varies.

This is similar to the fruit of the Spirit: when we first meet someone, we can’t see what kind of person they are on the inside. However, as we spend time with them, we can see the qualities in their lives. Qualities like the fruits of the Spirit are difficult to measure. The only way that we can really tell whether people have these fruits is to spend time with them and notice how they treat other people. Just looking at someone won’t tell us if they have good qualities in their lives. It is important not to judge people by what they look like on the outside. The fruit of the Spirit develops on the inside: the way people behave towards others shows something about the kind of person they are on the inside.

Amen.

Corner Exotics Visitor

You should have received a letter via email about our class visit from Simon from Corner Exotics, on Thursday 10th February. If you haven’t or would like a hard copy, please contact Mrs Lloyd in the school office.

Many thanks.

Charles Darwin Morning

Fireflies have had a fun filled morning learning all about Charles Darwin.

They learnt about Charles Darwin’s early life, and his 5 year journey on HMS Beagle, around the Galápagos Islands. They then became explorers; discovering some of the different species of animals that Charles Darwin collected during his voyage. This is a great starting point for our history work.

Fireflies enjoy a Charles Darwin Experience

The Fireflies have been learning about who Charles Darwin is for their history learning – and this morning they are having a fun time whilst experiencing a Charles Darwin Experience workshop in the hall!  it is so lovely to hear the lively chatter and questions as this is the first visitor experience we have held for 2 years – and they are all having a fantastic time being mini biologists!

KS2 Morning Snacks

We would like to remind parents that children in Key Stage 2 (Dragonflies and Scorpions) can bring a piece of fruit or vegetable into school as a snack for morning playtime.

Can we kindly request that parents stick to just fruit or vegetables – as recently we have seen children bringing a varied assortment of snacks including crisps or chocolate biscuits.

Reminder: Covid19 Testing and Isolation Rules

We thought it would be helpful to remind parents of the guidance with regards testing, isolating and close contacts, as there have been so many updates and changes!

TESTING

If you your child develops:

  • a high temperature
  • a new, continuous cough
  • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste

your child should self-isolate immediately and book a PCR test. If the results come back as negative then children can return to school.

ISOLATING

If you have any of the above symptoms, or have tested positive on an LFT, then you need to isolate for 5 days. On the 5th and 6th day, you need to take LFTs, 24 hours apart, and if these are both negative then your isolation can end.  You need 2 negative LFTs or to reach 10 days before you can leave isolation.

CLOSE CONTACTS

If you are a close contact of someone who has tested positive, then you don’t have to isolate – you just need to take daily LFTs and continue as normal.

With all of the above, we really appreciate being kept informed, particularly with regards PCR test results.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Our class challenge

We have been making good progress with our challenge to run the length of the Shropshire county border.

So far we have travelled 161 km, we now have 336 km to go.
