Reflection of the Day

I am sure everyone is aware of the amazing fundraising superstar called Captain Tom Moore!  He is an absolute prime example of our SMART learning behaviours – such motivation and ambition, and what an amazing achievement!  He has raised over £20 MILLION so far by walking 100 times around his house at the age of 99 – what a hero!

I thought you might like to know some of his background…

Captain Tom Moore was born on April 30th in 1920. His parents and family were local builders in Keighley, Yorkshire, where he spent much of his life. He attended Keighley Grammar School as a child, and later went on to complete an apprenticeship as a Civil Engineer. But in 1940, aged just 20, his education took a pause as he was conscripted into the army to fight in World War Two.

Tom joined the 8th Battalion of The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, with whom he was sent to Cornwall to defend the coast as the threat of a German invasion loomed.

After being selected for officer training, Tom quickly rose up through the ranks to captain and in 1941, was enlisted to India. The journey to Bombay took six weeks by sea. There, Captain Tom was instructed to start a motorcycle course for his regiment, before moving onto Calcutta in a treacherous three week road trip in the the midst of the monsoon season. Later, he served and fought on the Arakan in Burma – a British colony which was invaded by the Japanese. He moved further south with his troops to Rangoon, then the capital of Burma and a major port, before the Japanese surrendered. After his overseas duties were said and done, Tom returned to the UK to become an instructor at The Armoured Fighting Vehicle School in Bovington, Dorset, where he continued to work until all tanks and troops were demobilised. But his life did not quieten down after that.

After he came out of the army Tom raced his Scott motorbike around Yorkshire and won several cups and medals. He also organised the annual reunion of his regiment for 64 years – the longest continual annual reunion in the Duke of Wellington Regiment.

If you click here you can see the video of his final lap of the house!

On the 30th April, Captain Tom Moore is 100 years old!  I wondered whether anyone would like to send him a birthday message, drawing or card?  If you do, email them to admin@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk and we will send them onto Captain Tom!

Such an amazing achievement really shows what we can do when we try, and we work together!  So there’s a little song here you might want to join in with!

TOGETHER

Prayer of the Day

Dear God,
Thank you for the school, the clubs and the family that we are part of.
Please help us to encourage and support others.
Please help us to play our parts in the teams that we are in.
Please help us to encourage unity.
Thank you.
Amen.

Welcome back Class 2 -Daily Activities 20.4.20

Good morning Class 2! I hope you are all well and feel rested. If you haven’t already, please have a look at the previous post to see what we will be exploring during the Summer term. I’m really looking forward to it! Please keep in touch, it’s so nice to hear from you and find out what you have been doing at home.

If there is anything you want to ask or suggest, please do not hesitate to get in touch. class2@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk

Class 4 – Home Activities – 20.04

I hope you’ve all had a good Easter.

This term, the set up of our activities has changed slightly – as I’m looking to try and include some of the content which had not yet been covered in school this year. This will be most noticeable in maths, where there will be a video for you to watch and some activities to follow. Year 5 and Year 6 will have different videos/activities to complete – it is important you stick to your year group. The Year 5s’ activities will, to begin with, be a recap of some of the work we did before the school closure. There will still be some EBM questions and, if you’re still up for some more maths after you’ve done your activities, there will still be some bar model questions available as an extension task.

I’ve tried to make this as easy as possible to follow and will try to include everything needed on a single post. If you have any questions about anything, feel free to email me (class4@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk).

Although a new “maths lesson” will be available every day, please don’t feel pressured to keep up – especially if you feel that you need to spend more than one day on a session.

As always, you don’t have to do these activities at a set time or in a set order – that’s all up to you. Also, you don’t have to be doing work all day! Feel free to send in some pictures or videos of some of the other things you have been doing at home.

Reading

As always, you should be regularly reading your own reading books; however, the author and publisher of last term’s class read (Pax) have given permission to do some readings. To start with, I thought it would best if we recapped what had happened so far (as it was over 4 weeks since we last read it together). Starting from tomorrow,  I will include a video of a reading from Pax.

Fitting with the theme of foxes, here’s a short animation called “A Fox and A Mouse”.

After watching this video, see if you can answer these questions:

1.) At the start of the clip, what did you think the fox was trying to do to the mouse?
2.) What made you think this?
3.) How was this different to how you felt at the end of the clip?
4.) In this clip, what could the fox do that the mouse couldn’t?
5.) In this clip, what could the mouse do that the fox couldn’t?
6.) What country do you think this animation is set in? Explain your answer.
7.) Choose one word to describe each of the characters.

Science

Our science topic for this term is going to be “Living Things and their Habitats”, so it would be fantastic if you want to do anything outdoors at home to do with living things and the habitats in which they live in. Remember to send in any photos you wish to share.

To get you started, here is a couple of vocabulary jigsaws on living things and their habitats. Don’t worry if you find these tricky (particularly the second one); we’ll try and cover some of the aspects over the rest of the term.

Welcome Back! Summer Term 2020.

Good morning Class 1! I hope you all had a lovely Easter break. I have missed our daily communications and I am really looking forward to hearing from you all.

This week we will be starting our new topic ‘On the Beach.’ We have lots of interesting things to learn about. All the information about what we will be learning this term can be found on the class 1 information page.

This term, reception children will be moving onto Phase 5 sounds, in phonics. This will mean that the children will be learning sounds they have not been taught previously.

In English, our work for the next few weeks will be based around the book ‘Sharing a Shell’ by Julia Donaldson. Do not worry if you don’t have a copy of the book as there are lots of videos online. If you have audible, there is an audio version of the book available to download.

In maths, we have decided to move forward with new concepts that have not previously been taught. We will be using the White Rose home learning activities as this is the scheme we follow in school. It will involve watching a video and then completing an activity afterwards.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me:

We are all missing being in school with the Brown Clee team but know that we will be back together at some point! In the meantime we can enjoy sharing our news and activities through the photos shared on the class pages!

We also have a birthday to celebrate, as yesterday was Meryn’s 9th birthday! We hope she had a lovely day and so we can all join in with a rousing HAPPY BIRTHDAY MERYN! (Slightly different variation!)

Here comes the Summer Term!

Welcome back Class 2! I hope you have all had a lovely Easter break with your families and enjoyed the sunshine. I have missed you all and look forward to being in touch via email again.

Our topic for the Summer Term is ‘SPLASH’!

Have a look below at some of the things we will be exploring.

Summer Term!

Well tomorrow is the start of the summer term, and we hope that everyone has enjoyed the good weather during the Easter break, and is safe and well!

We are all feeling sad that we won’t be at school together tomorrow, and will miss everyone’s Easter news and smiles! However, you might not be able to see us, but we are here for you all at anytime!

The class teachers will be posting learning activities first thing in the moment as before Easter…and we will look forwards to seeing the photos and work s you send them in! I will continue to post Reflection Time and a Prayer of the Day at 10am each day.

We have no idea how long this is going to continue for, but we will endeavour to be here for you all, so please keep in touch, share your news and photos, and stay safe and positive!

STOP PRESS: Class 3 Class Book

The class book for Class 3 this term, is ‘The Golden Acorn’ by Catherine Cooper. It is an award winning fantasy, adventure story written by a local Shropshire author. The normal practice when share reading a class book, is for the class teacher to read aloud with children following with their own copy – this encourages individual reading, promotes comprehension and supports those children who may find it trickier to read on their own.

The Golden Acorn By Catherine Cooper

Mrs Heath has worked really hard in the holidays to seek permission from the author, Catherine Cooper (a local Shropshire author), and the publisher, Infinite Ideas, to get permission to record herself reading the book and post these recordings online.  These recordings will be used in the work being set for the class over the coming weeks.  It would be SO beneficial for all Class 3 children to have their own copy of the book too.  It is available on Amazon as a FREE Ebook at the moment – and of course you could also buy it as a paperback.

On the class pages Mrs Heath has kindly shared how you can download this FREE electronic version of this book, as well as how to download free Ereading software.

If you have any difficulties doing this please contact us to ask for help – as we really want to try and enable all children to enjoy this fantastic story! (I read it in the holidays – it is an exciting fantasy adventure story – and I know the children will love it!)

New Class 3 reader starts Monday 20th April

I am really looking forward to starting our new class reader, “The Golden Acorn” by Catherine Cooper”, together on Monday!

I hope that you all have your copy of the text at the ready.

If not, please see below:

On Amazon at the moment the book is available free as an ebook.

Please could you download this as soon as possible so that it is ready and waiting for the new term?

Please find instructions on how to download the Kindle Reading App for PC/laptop here:

And instructions for how to download “The Golden Acorn” itself here:

Instructions on how to download free ebook

If you prefer to, you can purchase a new paperback copy of the book at sites such as Amazon where it is selling for £8.99. Another option is a site such as World of books where there are second hand copies for £5.99. Do not feel obliged to have a paperback. The ebook is free.

If you have any difficulties, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Well Done Lola!

Look what Lola has been up to during this lockdown!  She has created this giant giraffe in her window to remind people to stay at home and save lives!  As a well done she has received a certificate from the NHS!

Don’t forget to download the new Class 3 reader: “The Golden Acorn by Catherine Cooper”

Download free ebook now ready for next term

Thank you to all of you who have already emailed to let me know that you have your copy of the  class text. I look forward to hearing from you soon if you haven’t emailed yet and look forward to starting our new book together next week.

Class 3’s class reader next term is “The Golden Acorn” by Catherine Cooper.

In order to continue our class reading sessions, each child will need a copy of the book. Usually we each have a copy of the book at school, but because we are working from home we will need to do this slightly differently!

On Amazon at the moment the book is available free as an ebook. Please could you download this as soon as possible so that it is ready and waiting for the new term? Please find instructions on how to download the Kindle Reading App for PC/laptop here:

Summer Term Preparation

I hope you are all well, and that you managed to get an Easter break and make the most of the fantastic weather!  We are awaiting the official announcement later today, but we feel it is highly unlikely that the school will open normally on Monday for the start of the summer term.  If it is confirmed that the current ‘lockdown’ measures will be continuing, then we will continue to provide daily classwork via the school website.

The feedback about the work the teachers set for the 2 weeks prior to the Easter break was hugely positive and supportive. We are very aware that every family will have their own commitments and challenges, so please do not feel pressured to have to do everything – a pick and mix approach is probably the best way to go!

We feel one of the most important aspects is the sharing of photos and work on the class news pages, as it allows children to keep in touch, beit virtually, with their friends by seeing what they are up to.

I will also continue to post a Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day at 10am.

We will also be posting our Calculation Policies, which we were going to explain at the Workshop for Parents – please look, as these may offer some guidance in how to help your child with any maths work.  Also, if you have any questions, please just email and ask – either to the class teacher using the class email addresses or our admin email address: admin@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk.

We are all really missing being at school and being with the children – none of us joined education to work remotely – it is the interaction, the laughs, the chats and lightbulb moments of teaching and engaging with children that was our motivation. But we know that one day we will be back in school – and we are all looking forwards to that day!  So in the meantime, please keep in touch, keep watching the website and take care and stay safe!

Another Birthday!!

On this gorgeous Spring day we would like to wish Archie B a very happy birthday!  We know it must be so strange for everyone having birthdays and not being able to celebrate with your friends – so if anyone wants to share a birthday photo on the website for friends to see please feel free to send to admin@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk

Now let’s all join in and sing happy birthday to Archie!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ARCHIE

Ditton Prior Care Home – Letters from Pupils

Before the Easter holiday, Class 4 children had the opportunity to write letters to the residents of our local care home, where our Brown Clee Buddies normally visit weekly to share a story or a game together.  With the current situation this interaction isn’t happening, and we are missing seeing the residents.  We thought it would be nice for our children to write them letters – so they did and I have received an email from Ditton Priors Care Home thanking the children:-

” Good Morning, Thank you very much for the letters our residents love them. Keep safe and hopefully wont be long till we can see you all again :)”

Here are some of the letters that the children sent:-
