Request for Information on Shielding

Good afternoon – we hope you are having a good day, despite the significant temperature drop!

Following on from yesterday’s broadcast, and in preparation for opening for children at some point in the future, it would be really helpful if parents could keep us informed if for whatever reason you are ‘Shielding’.  The guidance on shielding for vulnerable people can be found here:-

Guidance on Shielding and Protecting People who are Clinically Vulnerable

Shielding simply means putting extra protection in place for people who are most likely to get very poorly from coronavirus, and it involves a whole family being shielded or protected.

This would also be a good opportunity to remind you that if you have any worries or concerns about your child returning to school, please feel free  to contact me on: head@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk  – we may not have an instant answer, but it will mean that we are aware of what parents issues may have and we can either reassure you that we will have procedures and routines in place, or hopefully find an answer for you.

If you missed a maths video/lesson or want to revisit something, here are the previous posts.

Reading

Last week, we finished the final chapters of Pax. If you’ve missed any of the chapters and want to hear them again, here’s a link to all the previous posts since Easter.

Our book for this term is going to be The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. I don’t have permission from the author/publisher to share readings of this book; however, I do have recordings of the author himself reading the book! The chapters are quite long so I will try and post part of each chapter each day.

Here’s some questions about what you’ve just listened to:

1.) What was chapter 1 called?
2.) What happened to the child’s parents?
3.) Who found the child?
4.) Where was Caius Pompeius from?
5.) Who do you think the man climbing into the graveyard was?
6.) “Ever since the child had learned to walk, he had been his mother and father’s despair and delight?” – What do you think the author meant by this?

Writing

The beginning of this book creates a tense atmosphere. Your writing task for this week (it will likely take Monday and Tuesday) is to write your own tense atmosphere. You can base it on a scene similar to the one from the book, or come up with one of your own.

Think carefully about how the author creates this tension:
– he doesn’t reveal too much information (e.g. He refers to a knife in the darkness rather than describing a person carrying a knife);
– he repeats certain words or phrases (e.g. the man Jack)
– he uses figurative language (e.g. metaphors, similes, personification) in some of his descriptions (e.g. wisps of the night-time mist slithered and twined into the house)
– he uses a variation of long and short sentences (e.g. It would do)

Reflection Time and Daily Prayer

Good Morning Brown Clee!

I hope everyone has had an enjoyable weekend! It was wonderful to see the photos of you all celebrating VE Day on Friday in that fantastic sunshine!

There has been lots to reflect on recently, particularly since the Prime Ministers’ broadcast last night. There are so many uncertainties at the moment and uncertainties can sometimes cause all sorts of worries; often we can worry about things that we can’t control.

At the moment, the coronavirus is quite possibly the root cause of many of our worries. There is a picture book by Jon Burgerman called “Everybody Worries” written to help children (and adults!) who may be worried about the coronavirus.

So whether you are the bravest of the brave, or smartest of the smart, we all have worries and it is perfectly ok to have worries…but it is important to share them by talking about them. And as the book says, ‘this’ won’t last forever, and we can overcome anything if we work together!

Prayer of the Day

Lord,

Be with us in our hearts today, in our work and in our play.
Help us not to worry, Lord, on days when things get tough.
Show us that by facing them, that will be enough.
Worry gets us nowhere, worry doesn’t pay.
Help us, Lord, to understand this lesson every day.

Amen

Covid-19 Update following Prime Ministers Announcement

Dear Parents/Carers,

I am sure that after the Prime Ministers statement tonight, you may well have lots of questions.  We have lots of questions that need clarification too!

At the moment there is no change to the guidance. We will continue to provide care for those parents whose work is critical to the Covid-19 response. The message is still that it is safer to stay at home.

We have not received any information to support us with this new plan to start the phased reopening of some year groups, and we expect that we will receive further information from the Department of Education shortly, hopefully with some clarification of how these plans are expected to be implemented.

We will need clear guidance to plan how it is possible to social distance in schools and keep our children, staff and families safe; how we might start to phase groups of children returning and what this looks like.  Please be assured that there is no way we will reopen until we are 100% prepared.

As always, we will keep you informed, but for now, please try not to worry.  A lot hinges on what happens in the next few weeks.  Our plan for now is to continue to provide learning activities for you to access at home, to be here if you need to contact us, and help support you in these difficult and uncertain times.

VE Day

Thank you to everyone who had sent in pictures in blue, white and red to celebrate VE Day. Here’s a compilation of all the pictures sent in:

Hope everyone has had a great day, and enjoy your weekend.

Sharing page – 7.5.20

Thank you for all the great photos of your lovely work and the interesting things that you have been creating. It really is nice to see what you are getting up to.

Have a relaxing weekend everyone.

Class 1’s Sharing Post.

Good afternoon Class 1! Thank you for all your lovely photos and emails. I have posted them on this page for you all to see what your classmates have been up to.

As tomorrow is a bank holiday, there will be no work posted on the website. Enjoy your VE Day celebrations and don’t forget to send in your photos of you in red, white and blue by 12 noon for the whole school montage.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend!

Mrs Fox

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

Good Morning Brown Clee!

By now you’ll know that tomorrow is the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, or VE Day.  You might not know that the Germans actually signed their surrender today, on the 7th May 1945!

I know that the teachers have been linking their daily activities this week to this theme, but I thought it would be good to share a short video of the history of VE Day, as it is such a significant day in the world’s history.

VE DAY VIDEO

Can you imagine what it must have felt like to wake up one morning and have peace after 6 years of war. No more bombers and fighters flying overhead, no more air raid sirens and dashing into bunkers, no more carrying gas masks. People must have felt a whole range of emotions, one of which most certainly would have been joy!

Hopefully tomorrow you will party, with Union Jacks and bunting, and maybe enjoy your own garden party!  Don’t forget to send in photos to your teachers by noon of you wearing red, white and blue and we will put them together into a whole school VE Day montage!

Here is a song to celebrate VE Day too: “KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON”

Prayer of the Day

Dear God,
We pray today for peace,
Peace in our world, between nations and between individuals.
We pray for peace in our hearts and in our relationships.
We pray for peace in our schools and communities.
Please keep us free from fear and free from anxiety.
We ask for the courage to live a life of love today,
A life in which we actively work for peace through our words and our actions.
We commit this day to you and to peace.
Amen.
