Good afternoon, well done with your work Class 2.

I have received some lovely pieces and I can see that a lot of effort has gone into them.

Class 1’s Sharing Post

Good afternoon, I hope you have all had a good day! I have really enjoyed finding out all the different places you would like to go.Thank you to everyone for sending in your photos today.

Potential School Opening on June 1st for Reception, Year 1 and Year 6

You are probably aware that, dependent on how the government assess the progress in controlling the coronavirus, the school may open on 1st June for Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 children.  We have been given lots of guidance on how this could happen, and are, and have previously been, putting plans and procedures together of how we could safeguard children and staff if there was a phased opening of schools.

The government have also provided guidance for parents which you can find here:-

Opening Schools and Educational Settings to more pupils from 1st June: guidance for parents and carers

The school has an action plan in place, and this will be a working plan as we move forwards.  We will be implementing hygiene procedures, cleaning procedures, social distancing procedures and drop off and pick-up procedures, amongst others.  I thought it would be helpful for parents to understand what school will be like for children if we do open on June 1st. So these are some bullet points:

  • Children will be sitting at desks that are 2m apart. Year 6s will fit into class 4, Year 1s will be split between Class 3 and Class 2, and Reception Children will be in Class 1 and The Pod.
  • Each group of children will have a teacher or a HLTA delivering the lesson, and this adult will stay with the children each day, to minimise contacts, as per the guidance.
  • There is a one-way system through the practical area (middle of school open area) with 2m spacings marked on the floor.
  • Children will socialise within their own group, and there will be staggered playtimes and lunchtimes, so that the groups don’t mix.  There will also be the expectation that children stay 2m apart at playtimes.
  • Children will have their own stationery equipment and trays, as guidance is for children not to share resources. This will also impact on playtime equipment and classroom resources – so children can bring their own toys in to play with during breaktimes.
  • Children and staff will be advised to wear different clothes each day, so we will be allowing children to wear their own clothes if they wish, to reduce washing demands at home.
  • We will need to share drop off and pick-up procedures to ensure that parents and children are not clustering at the start and end of the school day, and this might involve a staggered start for different year groups. We do not yet know if the school buses will be running, and are waiting to be informed.
  • We will still be providing critical keyworker care, and this would be in the hall, so lunch may well be in classrooms, with a packed lunch.
  • The remote teaching activities may change for year 2 and 5.

There will be further detail, and there is still a lot to sort out, but I felt it important that we are open and transparent with parents, and that you are fully aware of what school will ‘look’ like if we go back on 1st June.  We are working very hard to ensure that we have clear and safe procedures in place to ensure we can do all we can to protect our school community, so please share with friends and keep an eye out on the website.

I would like to reassure you that we will be ensuring we provide children with the teaching and support that they need, and help them with understanding and coping with these different routines and procedures.  We will also be ensuring that we offer reassurance and comfort in this somewhat different environment.

We are aware that as parents you may have concerns and worries about your children being in school; worries about their or your families physical safety and protection from the virus, or their mental well-being when working in such a strange and distant environment.  We very much appreciate this, and also do not look forwards to working in this way, as it is totally against how we operate as teaching staff. However, we have to follow the guidance we have been given in order to protect the children, staff and families.

We would very much appreciate your feedback and so will be emailling out a survey to all parents (including Year 2,3 and 4) so please keep an eye out on your inboxes.

In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please do email at head@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

Good Morning Brown Clee!

How lovely to have the sun back – and hopefully it will start to warm up as we go through the week!

This morning I want to focus on “Thinking Positively”, as it is easy when things are difficult, or even when the weather is a bit grey and damp and gloomy, to feel a bit low and negative.  So I have a short video clip I think you’ll like – starring Olaf!  Have a little watch and ponder about what Olaf is thinking when things start to go wrong?  What emotions does he experience?

What did Olaf think the moose was going to do to his nose – aka carrot!?!  I think he was worried that the moose was going to eat it – and what a state Olaf got into when he thought that!  He went into a right tizzy panic, splitting himself into so many pieces!!  How anxious and scared must he have felt!?!  Yes all the moose wanted to do was return the carrot to Olaf, to give him his nose back – what a kind moose!  If only Olaf hadn’t been so negative at the start he wouldn’t have had to go through all those negative emotions and stress!

So I wonder what message you can take from this!?!  For me it is, when things are challenging or don’t initially go as I had hoped, pause and ponder, take some big breaths and remember that you can only worry about things you can change – otherwise think positively as things might not be as bad as I think!

So here is a short sunny song to put a smile on your face!

SUNNY DAY

Prayer of the Day

Dear God,
Help us to have good attitudes.
Help us to encourage others.
Help us to look for the good in every situation.
Help us to bring hope, joy and peace to other people.
Help us to be grateful for all we have.
Amen.

Reading

Last week, we finished the final chapters of Pax. If you’ve missed any of the chapters and want to hear them again, here’s a link to all the previous posts since Easter.

Here is the 2nd part of the first chapter of The Graveyard Book. It starts just before yesterday’s ended.

Here’s some questions about what you’ve just listened to:

1.) What did the man Jack see instead of the ghosts of the graveyard?
2.) Who was “the caretaker” of the graveyard?
3.) What does Mrs Owens decide to call the baby?
4.) Think back to the the name of the chapter; why is the chapter called this?
5.) Other than the child, who else is alive in the graveyard?

Writing

Continue with your atmospheric descriptive scene.

Sentence / Fragment / Run-on

1.) There’s a snake over there!
2.) He’s stuck in the hedge, he needs help.
3.) It’s about time we left, it’s getting quite late.
4.) If we’ve got time.
5.) The house on top of the hill.

Daily Video

I think we have looked at this video before.

Here’s some questions to get you thinking:
1.) At the start of the video what do the other dogs do to get past the white dog (Pip)?
2.) What does Pip do to get into the guide dog school?
3.) How would you describe Pip’s success at the start of this clip?
4.) Give 3 different pieces of evidence that supports your answer (to Q3).
5.) Who inspires Pip to improve?
6.) How would describe Pip’s exam day? Why?
7.) What happens to Pip after the his exam?
8.) What does Pip do at the end of the video which means he is given Ace’s cape?
9.) Who was the clip made for?

Science

All living organisms are divided between the seven different biological kingdoms:

– Animals
– Plants
– Bacteria (these are microscopic single-celled organism – some of which can cause illness and others, such as those that help us with digestion, are useful to us)
– Fungi (these includes organisms such as yeast, mushrooms and mold)
– Archaea (these are very similar to bacteria – you don’t really need to know about these yet)
– Protozoa (these microscopic single-celled organisms – you don’t really need to know about these yet)
– Chromists (these show some similarities to plants and include algae – you don’t need to know about these yet)

Viruses are not included in these as they are not considered “living”.

Today, we are going to look at the animal kingdom. Animals can be grouped as vertebrates (have a backbone) and invertebrates (do not have a backbone).

Request for Information on Shielding

Good afternoon – we hope you are having a good day, despite the significant temperature drop!

Following on from yesterday’s broadcast, and in preparation for opening for children at some point in the future, it would be really helpful if parents could keep us informed if for whatever reason you are ‘Shielding’.  The guidance on shielding for vulnerable people can be found here:-

Guidance on Shielding and Protecting People who are Clinically Vulnerable

Shielding simply means putting extra protection in place for people who are most likely to get very poorly from coronavirus, and it involves a whole family being shielded or protected.

This would also be a good opportunity to remind you that if you have any worries or concerns about your child returning to school, please feel free  to contact me on: head@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk  – we may not have an instant answer, but it will mean that we are aware of what parents issues may have and we can either reassure you that we will have procedures and routines in place, or hopefully find an answer for you.

Reading

Last week, we finished the final chapters of Pax. If you’ve missed any of the chapters and want to hear them again, here’s a link to all the previous posts since Easter.

Our book for this term is going to be The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. I don’t have permission from the author/publisher to share readings of this book; however, I do have recordings of the author himself reading the book! The chapters are quite long so I will try and post part of each chapter each day.

Here’s some questions about what you’ve just listened to:

1.) What was chapter 1 called?
2.) What happened to the child’s parents?
3.) Who found the child?
4.) Where was Caius Pompeius from?
5.) Who do you think the man climbing into the graveyard was?
6.) “Ever since the child had learned to walk, he had been his mother and father’s despair and delight?” – What do you think the author meant by this?

Writing

The beginning of this book creates a tense atmosphere. Your writing task for this week (it will likely take Monday and Tuesday) is to write your own tense atmosphere. You can base it on a scene similar to the one from the book, or come up with one of your own.

Think carefully about how the author creates this tension:
– he doesn’t reveal too much information (e.g. He refers to a knife in the darkness rather than describing a person carrying a knife);
– he repeats certain words or phrases (e.g. the man Jack)
– he uses figurative language (e.g. metaphors, similes, personification) in some of his descriptions (e.g. wisps of the night-time mist slithered and twined into the house)
– he uses a variation of long and short sentences (e.g. It would do)
