Science

All living organisms are divided between the seven different biological kingdoms:

– Animals
– Plants
– Bacteria (these are microscopic single-celled organism – some of which can cause illness and others, such as those that help us with digestion, are useful to us)
– Fungi (these includes organisms such as yeast, mushrooms and mold)
– Archaea (these are very similar to bacteria – you don’t really need to know about these yet)
– Protozoa (these microscopic single-celled organisms – you don’t really need to know about these yet)
– Chromists (these show some similarities to plants and include algae – you don’t need to know about these yet)

Viruses are not included in these as they are not considered “living”.

Today, we are going to look at the animal kingdom. Animals can be grouped as vertebrates (have a backbone) and invertebrates (do not have a backbone).

Reading

Last week, we finished the final chapters of Pax. If you’ve missed any of the chapters and want to hear them again, here’s a link to all the previous posts since Easter.

Our book for this term is going to be The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. I don’t have permission from the author/publisher to share readings of this book; however, I do have recordings of the author himself reading the book! The chapters are quite long so I will try and post part of each chapter each day.

Here’s some questions about what you’ve just listened to:

1.) What was chapter 1 called?
2.) What happened to the child’s parents?
3.) Who found the child?
4.) Where was Caius Pompeius from?
5.) Who do you think the man climbing into the graveyard was?
6.) “Ever since the child had learned to walk, he had been his mother and father’s despair and delight?” – What do you think the author meant by this?

Writing

The beginning of this book creates a tense atmosphere. Your writing task for this week (it will likely take Monday and Tuesday) is to write your own tense atmosphere. You can base it on a scene similar to the one from the book, or come up with one of your own.

Think carefully about how the author creates this tension:
– he doesn’t reveal too much information (e.g. He refers to a knife in the darkness rather than describing a person carrying a knife);
– he repeats certain words or phrases (e.g. the man Jack)
– he uses figurative language (e.g. metaphors, similes, personification) in some of his descriptions (e.g. wisps of the night-time mist slithered and twined into the house)
– he uses a variation of long and short sentences (e.g. It would do)

Writing

Last week, some of mentioned you’d quite like to carry on with the Lenny and Carl handwriting tasks. Today’s will just be a recap of how far we got to in the story so far. So, all you have to do is copy up the following in your neatest handwriting.

Lenny was frog who lived in Oxford. He had been cursed by a mysterious group (known as “The Darkness”). Lenny’s best friend Carl was a fox. Carl saved Lenny from the curse by eating him and then “bringing him back up”…

We later found out that Lenny was the heir to the Kingdom of Frogkind; however, he and his father had fallen out a while ago and had never made up. In an attempt to help stop The Darkness, Lenny returned to his father make up. After breaking into the King’s chambers (via the sewers…), Lenny found his father, who appeared dead. Lenny soon found out that it was not the case.

Meanwhile, we found out that Carl was in fact a secret agent – who worked for a oink rabbit called Mr Snuffles. Carl found out that The Kingdom of Lizardkind had been involved with the reintroduction of The Darkness. He went to investigate and was finally able to interrogate their leader (Lizzie Lizardonius). With the information in hand, he met up with Lenny at the King’s castle. Where he found Lenny with his mother and father all celebrating with a birthday cake.

P.E.

Our P.E. task today comes as challenge from the East Shropshire Sports Partnership. You can either challenge someone in your family, play it on your own or even video call a friend and challenge them.

As always, send in any questions or any photos to share.

The Last Wild

History

As you will found last week, Henry VII (Henry the Seventh) was the first Tudor king. He was also known as Henry Tudor. Before Henry VII became king, there was long civil war between the two rival houses: The House of Lancaster (represented by a red rose) and The House of York (represented by a white rose). This war was known as the War of the Roses.

Richard III was king before Henry VII. Henry fought Richard in a battle (known as the Battle of Bosworth).

Here’s video explaining the build up before the battle (the video should stop at about 3:08)

Here’s a second video which shows the famous story of what supposedly happened during the Battle of Bosworth:

Reading

Here’s today’s chapter from Pax:

Daily Video

Here’s today’s animation:

Before you start your questions, I would like to point out that butterfly caterpillars don’t “climb” into their chrysalis, and that after the caterpillar sheds its final skin, the layer beneath it actually hardens over time to form a chrysalis. Moth caterpillars form a cocoon around themselves by spinning silk around themselves. Anyway, scientific accuracy aside, here are your questions:

1.) What scared the caterpillar at the start of the clip?
2.) What do the other two insects do to help the caterpillar into its chrysalis?
3.) Why do the two insects have to stay on the rock?
4.) How do you think the “caterpillar” feels when it emerges as a butterfly?
5.) How does the clip end?

Writing

As quite a few of you have said you’d like some opportunities to write stories, today’s task is to write a short story about a butterfly’s journey from a caterpillar to a moth.

You can use today’s video for inspiration. You can write your story in first person (as if you were the butterfly or something watching the butterfly) or in third person.

This is likely to take slightly longer than most writing tasks, so it can count as today’s and tomorrow’s task.

Science

Following on with the butterfly theme, today’s science task is to draw the life cycle of a butterfly. It would be great if you could include pictures and a description of what happens at each stage.

Here’s a video showing the metamorphosis of a butterfly to help you out (it is a time-lapse video, meaning it has been sped up and it does not happen as quick as in this video):

Writing

Today’s writing task is to come up with a list of the activities which have been set during this time that you have enjoyed doing most. You could also include some suggestions of activities that you would like to do more or any activities that we haven’t done which you think everyone else might enjoying doing.

Geography

Your task in Geography is to label as many settlements (e.g. Shrewsbury, Ditton Priors etc) on this map of Shropshire.

This map is missing Telford and Wrekin – if you wish to include them as part of Shropshire, feel free to do so. Telford and Wrekin are a separate council to Shropshire; however, it is still in the ceremonial county of Shropshire.

Daily Video

Here’s today’s animation:

and some questions to get you thinking:

1.) What two things make the lady want to get a new robot?
2.) What does the new robot do with the old one?
3.) Why does the lady like the new robot at first?
4.) What makes the lady want to get rid of the new robot?
5.) After the old robot is kicked out, what makes it come back?
6.) Which robot would you prefer and why?

Writing

Today’s writing task is to create a poster advertising one of the robots from today’s video (you can choose which one). Things to think about: what images you may want to include, what information you wish to include and the price. Remember, if you’re advertising something, you’re trying to make the reader want whatever you are advertising (in this case a robot).

History

Our topic this term is going to be Tudor Shropshire. Last week in history, we looked at home the Tudors fitted within the bigger picture of British history. Today, you are going to see if you can find out the order of these Tudor Kings and Queens.

Spelling Shed – Leader Boards

We have lots of changes in the leader board on Spelling Shed.

Well done to Archie B for taking the lead!

We’ve also had a change in the group leader boards – with Class 2 taking the lead:

Hive Game – Results (+ update)

This week, the number taking part in hive games has become quite low, which is absolutely fine – they’re only there if you would like to take part. To help with this, we will only have one set of hive games each week (which will be on a Monday).

The times of these games will change slightly too. We will have the same set up, but with the first game starting at 2:00pm.

So, the next games will be next Monday – where there will be four hive games as follows:

– Game 1 (Y3/4 words – Medium difficulty) – 2:00pm
– Game 2 (Y3/4 words – Extreme difficulty) – 2:05pm
– Game 3 (Y5/6 words – Easy difficulty) – 2:10pm
– Game 4 (Y5/6 words – Hard difficulty) – 2:15pm

Anyone from Class 3 or 4 can join any of the games.

Here’s today’s results:

Game 1:
1.) George R
2.) Zak

Game 3:
1.) Zak
