KS1 Coffee and Cake

This week, we were delighted to welcome the parents and grandparents of children in Fireflies and Grasshoppers into school for coffee and cake. It was wonderful to see so many families join us and spend time together in school. Thank you to everyone that came and helped to make it such a special event.

Animal Family Visit

Fireflies and Grasshoppers had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon with the “Animal Family”. They learnt about lots of different creatures from Australia and other parts of the world. They were able to stroke and hold the animals too. They amazed with how enthusiastic they were in volunteering to hold the animals. Steve the Animal Man also commented on how impressed he was with the general knowledge of our children too.

Nativity lines and Costumes

If your child has brought home lines to learn for their part in the nativity, please can you support them at home to learn their lines and deliver them with lots of volume and expression!

Your child will have a slip in their school bag to let you know what they will need for their costume. We have tried to provide as many costumes as possible, with those we have in school.

Please bring costumes into school when you have them, in a named bag.

The children will be having their photograph taken in their costumes on Wednesday 3rd December so please bring them into school no later than this.

Many thanks for your support.

Mrs Morris & Mrs Fox

Fireflies’ Church Visit

Fireflies made their teachers very proud when they all went on their first class trip to church on Friday. When we arrived Revd. Joe Simons welcomed us all. Then the children took part in a scavenger hunt and we were all impressed with their curiosity and knowledge. They also took part in a short prayer service and spoke confidently about what they wanted to say thank you for. Churchwarden Mr Smith was on hand to show us inside the font, the pulpit and some of the special items that are kept in the vestry. Before we left, he even rang the church bells for us all to listen to. We had a lovely morning and learnt so much about our church during the visit.

Summer Term in Fireflies

This term, our topic has been Africa. The children have thoroughly enjpyed learning all about the continent of Africa and what it would be like to live there.

As part of our Geography, we have been comparing life in Ditton Priors to life in an African village. We went on a bus trip, using our map skills to find the important features of Ditton Priors. We then compared our village to an African Village. The children used their knowledge to create a 3D map of a Kenyan village and Ditton Priors.

The children have also thoroughly enjoyed learning the skill of weaving to create a loom fish. In DT the children chose an African animal to re-create using clay. I think you will agree the results are fantastic.

As an end of term treat, we had a African themed day where the children made binoculars to use on a safari hunt for African Animals, had their faces painted as an African animal, listened to Mrs Robinson who spoke to them about her time in Africa. In Forest School, they made African jewellery and African flatbread which we cooked on the fire. Despite the weather, we all had a great day!

Finally, to end the year on a high, we found out that the Y1s in Fireflies had won the poster competition organised by Burwarton Show! The school will now recieve money to spend on art equipment. Well done Y1s!

Wishing everyone a wonderful Summer break!

Mrs Fox

New Reception Intake

As part of our transition process, the new Reception intake are coming into school one afternoon a week. It has been lovely getting to know them all before they start in September.

Fireflies’ Class Trip on the Severn Valley Railway

Fireflies had a thoroughly enjoyable trip on the Severn Valley Railway. We travelled by bus to Kidderminster Station to catch our train to the Engine House. The children enjoyed looking at and learning about all the different types of trains. They were able to see inside a Royal carriage used by King George VI. Some of the children were fascinated by the phones that were in there. They certainly looked different from the phones used today. The children also had a great time sorting the post on the Royal Mail train, completing puzzles, looking at the model railway and trying to build a bridge.

The train ride was enjoyed by everyone and we had the added bonus of seeing some of the animals at the Safari Park on our travels.

FOBCS Easter Egg Photo Challenge

On the last of term, the whole school took part in a photo search challenge. 30 different images of animals were hidden around the school grounds.

Children were put into mixed groups of 5s and given an initial starting number and had to find which animal was located there. Once they’d found it, they wrote it and down, had it checked and were given another. The challenge was to find 10 animals in the allocated time to win an Easter egg.

All the teams worked fantastically well together – and it was a wonderful way for us to all round off a brilliant Spring term .

Congratulations to Lexi – who correctly guessed the name of the Easter bunny: “Piglet”.

A big thank you to FOBCS for donating all of the Easter eggs and the Easter Hamper.

Mr Gumpy’s Motor Car

In art, Fireflies have been learning about the skills needed for observational drawing. We have also been doing work based around the story ‘Mr Gumpy’s Motor Car.’ The children  were very lucky to have the opportunity to put their skills into practice and draw a real life Mr Gumpy’s Motor Car. Thanks must go to Rich Parry who kindly brought the car into school for us to draw.

Ditton Priors History Group Visit To Fireflies

On Wednesday Fireflies were visited by Robin and Paul from the Ditton Priors History Group. They thoroughly enjoyed learning about the history of the village and looking at the pictures and artefacts that were brought in. The old brass band drum was a firm favourite. Thank you to Paul and Robin for such an interesting and informative afternoon.

Nativity Costumes/Lines

Nativity Costumes

We do have some nativity costumes in school but some of them are starting to look a little worn. If anyone has any old costumes that they are happy to donate to school, for future performances, we would be very grateful.

We will be sending home a slip next week so parents and carers know what costumes the children will need for our nativity performance.

Lines (KS1)

If your child has brought home lines to learn for their part in the nativity, please can you support them at home to learn their lines and deliver them with lots of volume!

Many thanks,

Level 2 Phonics- Pure Sounds and Actions

Please find below the video (link) for the Level 2 pure sounds and actions which Reception children are currently learning. Please note the pronunciation of the sounds, as they may sound different to how you say them at home. It is really important that children use ‘pure’ sounds when sounding out.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me: fireflies@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk.

Many thanks,

N.Fox
