Welcome back Grasshoppers!

Welcome back!

I hope you have all had a wonderful Summer break and enjoyed spending time with your families.

Hopefully, you all feel refreshed and ready for the new school year ahead!

Please find below some information about the ‘Grasshoppers’ class.

Monday – Thursday, the class is taught by Mrs Nicky Morris.

On a Friday, the class will be taught by Mrs Claire Wright.

Grasshoppers will be supported in class, at various times, by Mrs Markall, Mr Smith or Mrs Robinson.

This year, we have 26 children in class: 22 Year 2 children and 4 Year 1 children.

PE Days

Monday: Gymnastics & Dance (Indoor PE kit)

Friday: Games (Outdoor PE kit)

Water bottles

Please can water bottles be plastic, not metal and they must have non spill spouts. Children need to have a clean water bottle in school every day.

Bags and Coats

The children will need one bag for their belongings which will be placed in the cloakroom at the start of the day. They will bring their reading book, reading record and water bottle into the classroom only. There will be a box outside the classroom for lunchboxes to be stored.

Children must bring a warm, waterproof coat every day. They will be going outside at playtime whatever the weather.

Please ensure that all belongings are named, especially school jumpers, cardigans, coats and bags.

Hair

Long hair (below shoulder length) should be tied back. Hair should be kept out of children’s eyes using headbands or clips.

Trinkets and toys

Please can you ensure that the children do not bring into school trinkets or other small toys from home.

Reading

The children will be expected to read regularly throughout the week and have their record signed by an adult.

The children must bring their reading record and reading book to school every day. They need to bring them into class and place them in the blue box.

Homework

Homework is reading, learning the spellings for their year groups and learning their times tables. To support them to do this they will have access to ‘Spelling Shed’, ‘Numbots’ and ‘Times Table Rock Stars’.

I will give the children log in details for these and put more detailed information about spellings and times tables at the beginning of term.

(You can also find our school ‘Homework Policy’ on the school website.)

Please look out for regular updates on the Grasshoppers page of the school website. Here you will find reminders, photographs and information about the curriculum we follow in class.

All this information can also be found in the ‘Information’ section on our Grasshoppers class page.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me by email, send a note or arrange a telephone call/ appointment via the school office.

Our class email address which you can contact me directly on is: grasshoppers@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk

Art Work

Grasshoppers have created some brilliant art work this year. We have really enjoyed being inspired by the artists we have focused on such as Paul Klee, Stephen Wiltshire, Lottie Reiniger, Mary White and William Morris.

KS2 Performances

As you will all be aware, all of KS2 have two upcoming performances. With the afternoon performance on Wednesday, the performance will fit within normal school timings. The evening performance on Tuesday, however, begins at 6:00pm. To allow time to change into costumes, Children should arrive at school from 5:15pm and all should be at school by 5:30pm. If watching the performance, you can go into the hall ready for the performance once you have dropped your child off. If you are simply dropping your child off, the performance will be finished at around 7:15pm and children should be ready to be picked up again by 7:30pm.

If, for whatever reason your child may not be able attend the evening performance, please can you let us know as soon as possible – as we may be able to work together a plan.

Menu Change – week commencing 17th July

Pippa has asked us to advise you that there will be changes to the menu next week.

Unfortunately, her delivery of Jacket Potatoes did not arrive so there will be no jacket potato option on the menu next week and this will be replaced by a vegetarian pasta bake. If you have booked a jacket potato for your child and they do not want the pasta alternative, please could you log onto ParentPay by tomorrow to change the choice of meal.

On Tuesday, there is a special menu of Hot Dogs or cheese and baked bean plait. We are unable to change the menu in ParentPay, therefore, if your child would like a hot dog please select option 1 and if your child would like the baked bean plait please select option 2. Both options will be served with chips and peas and carrots. Sandwiches will also be available to pre-book. The pudding options which the children select on the day are chocolate muffin, yoghurt or fruit.

On Thursday, there is a special menu of Chicken Goujons or Cheese Pasta Bake. We are unable to change the menu in ParentPay, therefore, if your child would like a Chicken Goujons please select option 1 and if your child would like the Cheese Pasta Bake please select option 2. Both options will be served with peas and sweetcorn, bread or pasta. Sandwiches will also be available to pre-book. The pudding options which the children select on the day are Fruit flapjack, jelly, yoghurt or fruit.

Grasshoppers – Forest School – Monday 10th July

As Monday will be the last Forest School session of the school year we will be taking the whole class.

Please could the children wear or have with them clothing that will cover their arms and legs. The forecast shows some light rain for Monday afternoon, at the moment, so please could the children have a coat available.
Many thanks

Return from Arthog

The children have arrived safely back in school following their residential in Arthog. They have all had a lovely time.

Tractor Visit

Yesterday afternoon, Grasshoppers were treated to a visit from Mr & Mrs Preece and their two tractors.
A 71 year old Ferguson and a John Deere, for the children to have a look at and compare. They were able to ask lots of questions about the two tractors and took to the seats to try them out for size! This complemented our work this term on farming.
The children also spent some time sketching the tractors.

Thank you very much!

Dragonflies success on Spelling Shed

I had a knock on the door from Zak and Teddy from Dragonflies to share the good news that they had found out that their class are 98th in the whole world league with a fabulous score of 136,454, 198 points!

They have now set themselves a challenge of getting to 89th!  Let’s see how they go!

Arthog Update

The Year 5 and 6 children are continuing to have a great time at Arthog – they are very busy with their activities, including gorge walking, rock climbing and their night walk.

They are all also eating and sleeping well – so very happy children!

Arthog

We have had a message from the Arthog team and everyone is having a great time!

The groups have been doing canoeing, rock climbing, surfing and gorge walking and they did a night walk last night. Tonight they have done the nightline (which you can see in the photo).

There have been no homesickness episodes and the night porter has actually commented on how it’s the best nights sleep he’s had at Arthog! There have been lots of positive comments about manners too, with the kitchen staff saying that it’s the first group where every child has said please and thank you!

We are very proud of them all and am sure they will continue to have a great time! I have been asked to share that it is really full on and there aren’t many spare moments, so parents please do not worry if you don’t hear anything.

Disco Evening – Monday 17th July

Please see the posters below for further details of the Disco evening being held at the village hall on Monday 17th July. Please send payment in an envelope clearly marked with your child’s name. There will be refreshments available on the day for a small charge.

No Well Done Assembly – Friday 7th July

There will be no Well Done Assembly this Friday 7th July as Mr Harley is on a residential trip with Years 5 and 6.

The disco for KS1 children (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2) will be from 4.15pm to 5.45pm. The disco for KS2 children (Years 3 to 6) will be held from 6pm to 7.30pm. More details will follow shortly.

FOBCS Fundraising Meeting – Monday 3rd July 6pm

We are thrilled to announce that thanks to Carla and Louise, FOBCS are alive and kicking again, and the refreshments at Sports Day raised £120 for the school.

We are holding an informal, relaxed meeting in school on Monday 3rd July at 6pm to discuss ideas for future fundraising and we would like to encourage parents/grandparents to come and join us – as an active FOBCS does need everyone’s involvement.

So please come along and let’s see what we can do to work together to bring FOBCS to life!
