WBD – Quiz

It’s World Book Day!

Today is World Book Day, a day when children (and adults) all over the world celebrate books and reading. (I’ll let you into a secret….I believe everyday is World Book Day!)

I’ve been doing some research about reading….

Did you know?

  • If you read for 20 minutes a day you will have read 1,800,000 words in one year!
  • You will learn between 4,000 and 12,000 words in one year just by reading!
  • Regular reading improves brain connectivity, reduces stress, aids sleep, helps increase self confidence and reduces feelings of loneliness.
  • Reading can take you all over the world….in your imagination!
  • Regular reading improves your concentration and helps your understanding of different cultures and customs.

You don’t just have to read books. You can read ANYTHING – Leaflets, newspapers, magazines, cereal packets, comics, labels on jars/tins, road signs, cookery books, poems, jokes, instructions, labels on the supermarket shelves, bottles of bubble bath, anything with words!!

You can also read ANYWHERE – at bedtime, in the bath, listen to stories in the car, read in the garden, read on the beach, read in the car, read in a tractor, read up a tree…..

So, today (and everyday) enjoy a story. Listen to a story or read to yourself. How does it make you feel?

Class 1 Fitness Challenge

The first ever train was developed by George Stephenson and ran the length of the Stockton to Darlington railway which is 25 miles. Class 1’s challenge is to see how many times we can (collectively) complete the length of the railway.

Please see the document below for more details.

Have fun and lets get moving!

Workshop for Class 1 and 2 Parents: How to Help Your Child with Remote Learning

We are looking forward to joining you on Microsoft Teams tomorrow afternoon at 2pm for our ‘virtual’ workshop “How to Help Your Child with Remote Learning”.  This workshop will provide you with information about phonics, spelling, reading and writing, as well as providing you with the opportunity to ask questions.  We will be emailing the link to the meeting tomorrow morning – we kindly ask that the link is not shared with anyone in order to protect the security of the meeting.  The meeting is open to any parent/carer of a child in Class 1 and 2.
In order to help the meeting run smoothly – as this is the first time we have done this – I have attached a document which provides guidance on how to access the Teams meeting, as well as a protocol on privacy and data protection.
If you have any questions please do ask us – we so appreciate all your support with the remote learning, particularly with the younger children as they do need your help.
Mrs Fox, Mrs Morris and myself look forwards to ‘seeing’ you tomorrow at 2pm.

Class 1 and 2 Parents: How to help your child with remote learning workshop.

Good morning,

We are holding a virtual workshop for Class 1, and now also Class 2 parents (as we have had an expression of interest) on how you can help support your children with the remote learning.   It is going to be held on Wednesday 13th January at 2pm, and Mrs Fox, Mrs Morris and myself will be providing information on supporting children with their phonics, letter formation and reading, as well as being able to answer any questions that you may have.

The workshop will be held on Microsoft Teams – a free application, that you can download on a tablet or a laptop – here is a link:

www.microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-365/microsoft-teams/download-app

It is not essential to download this prior to the workshop, but it might make it more straightforwards.

If you have any specific questions, it would be really helpful to email them in to admin@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk before the workshop to allow us to be as helpful as possible.

I will be emailling Class 1 and 2 parents on Wednesday morning with the link to the Teams workshop, and I kindly ask that this link is not shared.

Workshop for Class 1 Parents: How to help your child with remote learning.

Good morning Parents,
We hope you are all well and managing with being at home and potentially juggling work and supporting your children with remote learning.  We are very much aware of the challenges and if there is anything we can do to help please do ask!
Mrs Fox and I would like to offer a workshop using Microsoft Teams where we will be able to talk to parents about how you can help with phonics, sounding out, reading, spellings, and anything that you wish to ask!  We use Microsoft Teams for staff meetings and governor meetings and it is really easy to access.  You can download the app here and it is free:
We want to help as much as possible so can do a workshop at the following times and in order to be as flexible as possible, can you please let us know a) if you are interested and b) which day/time would suit you best.  We are only planning on doing one workshop so will go with the majority vote.
Tuesday 12th January: 10am – 11am
Tuesday 12th January 2pm – 3pm
Tuesday 12th January 6pm – 7pm
Wednesday 13th January: 10am – 11am
Wednesday 13th January 2pm – 3pm
Wednesday 13th January 6pm – 7pm
If there is anything in particular that you would like to know about at this workshop please let me know so that Mrs Fox and I can prepare.

Remote learning

Firstly, I hope everyone had a good Christmas and send everyone my best wishes for the New Year!

I had hoped to see all the children today but unfortunately that is not going to be possible. Due to the current lockdown, all learning will be taking place remotely, at least until February half-term.

I am aware that for many parents this is their first experience of remote learning during lockdown. During lockdown, it is a Government expectation that children will engage with online learning and that children are set work to support their learning.

I will be using the Tapestry platform to set work on a daily basis. Any completed work will need to be submitted using Tapestry by 3:30pm to get feedback from either myself or Mrs Rollings.

If there are any issues/barriers to assessing or completing remote work, please contact me as soon as possible. Please be assured we will try to help you in any way we can.

I have sent further information via Tapestry and would be extremely grateful if you could check your Tapestry notifications and acknowledge receipt by ticking ‘like’ on the page.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me: class1@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk.

Many thanks,

N.Fox

Warm PE Kit Tomorrow

Please could Class 1 children come to school in their outdoor PE kit tomorrow. Many thanks, N.Fox

Reading Record Books

Please could you ensure that your child brings their blue reading record book into school with them everyday.

I would also be grateful if parents could sign their child’s reading record to show that they have read with their child. This will help us to ensure that their reading books get changed.

Many thanks,

N.Fox

Christmas Messages

As we are unable to send each other Christmas cards this year, the children have enjoyed writing Christmas messages for their friends.

Parent Feedback Sessions

Appointment slips have been sent home with your child this evening. Please check their school bags for your appointment information. Many thanks N.Fox

PE Kit on a Friday.

Please send your child into school, in their warm, outdoor PE kit, on a Friday (no shorts please.) A warm coat would also be advisable. Many thanks N.Fox

Spelling Shed- New Lists

I am really pleased to see how many of you have already been on the app! I have now released a few more lists for you to have a go at. Well done and keep up the great work! Mrs Fox

Spelling Shed

Spelling Shed is an app which is developed to support children’s spelling and phonetical awareness. It is used throughout the school and has made a positive impact on children’s spelling.

I have put new assignments on Spelling Shed for reception children. These assignments have been set at their current level of phonetic knowledge. The children are familiar with the app as we have used it in school.

Class 1 have been given their Spelling Shed login codes. If they had their blue Reading Record, the code was stuck in the back of their book. If they did not have their book in school, their code was stuck onto a blue piece of card and given to the children.

Many thanks

N.Fox

Forest School for all of Class1 tomorrow

Please note that all of Class 1 will be participating in Forest School tomorrow, so please can they come to school in warm clothes suitable for being outdoors, including hat and gloves. Water proof coats are essential, and if they have waterproof trousers or an all-in-one, then that would be great!  They will also need sturdy footwear.

The Dark,Dark Street

Class 1 have really enjoyed making their houses for the dark, dark street in the “FunnyBones” story. They had to cover their boxes with paper, paint their boxes and make a roof, windows and doors for their houses. They all worked extremely hard and produced some fantastic pieces of work!

2D shape investigations

Class 1 have enjoyed investigating the properties of different 2D shapes, including hexagons and pentagons.

Class 1’s P.E. Challenge Update.

All of Class 1 have been doing extremely well with their P.E. challenge. They are all extremely motivated to run as many lengths of the playground, as they can, in 3 minutes. Max has managed to run a fantastic total of 16 lengths, closely followed by Grace with 14 lengths.

Fabulous FunnyBones Freeze Frames.

Class 1 really enjoyed re-creating scenes from the “FunnyBones” story, using freeze frames.

Home-link Week Commencing 5th October

Thank you to everyone who has sent in what their child has been doing at home. The children really enjoy talking about what they have been doing and sharing their pictures (and videos) with the rest of the class.

Please find below information about what we have been doing in Class 1 this week.

Sharing Home-link

Esmae enjoyed sharing all the great work she has been doing at home. She has been practising her letter formation and doing lots of counting. Well done Esmae! If you have been doing any work at home, please email class1@brownclee.Shropshire.sch,uk. We would love to see what you have been up to!

Class 1 information: Home-link, Reading and Writing

Home-link

Please find attached details of what we have been learning in Class 1 during our first 2 weeks in school. I have also included some suggestions of things you could do at home, to reinforce what we have been learning in school

I would usually send a book home for the children to bring into school and share their work. Unfortunately, this is not possible at the moment. If you and your child would like to share, what they have been doing at home, please email: class1@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk. We will then share their work in school.

Weeks 1&2

 Reading:

I have been really impressed with the amount of children that have been reading their phonics book at home. I cannot stress the importance of reading with your child at home. Please  listen to your child read at home as much as possible. It really does make a huge difference to your child’s progress in reading.

The video clip below will help you to understand how we teach the ‘pure’ pronunciation of sounds in phonics sessions. Learning the pure sounds are key, to help with the process of blending sounds to read words.

Handwriting:

Below is a link to help support handwriting at home. This link shows the correct formation of letters that we have been learning in school.

If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact me on the Class 1 email address.

Many thanks

N.Fox

Class 1’s PE Challenge.

Class 1’s PE challenge, this term, is to see how many times they can run the length of the playground in 3 minutes. The fitness challenge links with our topic work on keeping fit and healthy. They all really enjoyed taking part today.
