Henry VIII (Henry the 8th) is perhaps the most famous of Tudor kings. He made lots of changes to England – a lot of which still have impacts on life today. This being said, Henry VIII is most famous for having 6 separate wives. You task in history today is to research and find out some information about each of his 6 wives.

Here’s some ideas to some of the information you could try to find out about each of them:
– What were their names?
– What was order in which he married them?
– What happened to each of his wives which meant Henry was no longer married to them?
– Did Henry have any children with any of his wives? If so, what were their names?

After congratulating Lenny and meeting the King and Queen of Frogkind, Carl quickly relayed his news about the release of the Darkness to everyone. The four of them quickly came up with some initial plans. King Erik and Queen Eve would first unite as many of 300 animal clans as they possibly could to take over the dominion of the Lizardkind. Carl, himself, would return to his headquarters to gain as much intel as he could from his boss Mr. Snuffles. Lenny was going to try and get in touch with as many of his old contacts from before he was exiled from the Frog Kingdom. After going over their plans one last time, they all set off to their individual tasks.

Carl arrived at headquarters late at night; however, he knew that Mr. Snuffles worked late and was always the last to leave the building. He placed his key card against the scanner for the elevator and stepped in. He took a deep, exhausted breath in, realising he had not slept for the last three days. This was something Carl was more than used to – his hours of spy training had more than prepared him for this. The elevator clicked past the 154th floor… The 155th…. 156th…

Carl was sure he could hear voice – lots of them. “That’s odd…” he thought to himself, especially when he thought only Mr Snuffles would be in the building. The elevator pinged loudly as he reached the 157th floor. Carl stepped out and walked slowly towards Mr Snuffles’s office door. The voices were louder now – although Carl couldn’t make much out. “There is definitely something going in there….” Carl slowly reached for the handle stopping for the briefest of moments….

All living organisms are divided between the seven different biological kingdoms:

– Animals
– Plants
– Bacteria (these are microscopic single-celled organism – some of which can cause illness and others, such as those that help us with digestion, are useful to us)
– Fungi (these includes organisms such as yeast, mushrooms and mold)
– Archaea (these are very similar to bacteria – you don’t really need to know about these yet)
– Protozoa (these microscopic single-celled organisms – you don’t really need to know about these yet)
– Chromists (these show some similarities to plants and include algae – you don’t need to know about these yet)

Viruses are not included in these as they are not considered “living”.

Today, we are going to look at the animal kingdom. Animals can be grouped as vertebrates (have a backbone) and invertebrates (do not have a backbone).

Last week, we finished the final chapters of Pax. If you’ve missed any of the chapters and want to hear them again, here’s a link to all the previous posts since Easter.

Our book for this term is going to be The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. I don’t have permission from the author/publisher to share readings of this book; however, I do have recordings of the author himself reading the book! The chapters are quite long so I will try and post part of each chapter each day.

Here’s some questions about what you’ve just listened to:

1.) What was chapter 1 called?
2.) What happened to the child’s parents?
3.) Who found the child?
4.) Where was Caius Pompeius from?
5.) Who do you think the man climbing into the graveyard was?
6.) “Ever since the child had learned to walk, he had been his mother and father’s despair and delight?” – What do you think the author meant by this?

Writing

The beginning of this book creates a tense atmosphere. Your writing task for this week (it will likely take Monday and Tuesday) is to write your own tense atmosphere. You can base it on a scene similar to the one from the book, or come up with one of your own.

Think carefully about how the author creates this tension:
– he doesn’t reveal too much information (e.g. He refers to a knife in the darkness rather than describing a person carrying a knife);
– he repeats certain words or phrases (e.g. the man Jack)
– he uses figurative language (e.g. metaphors, similes, personification) in some of his descriptions (e.g. wisps of the night-time mist slithered and twined into the house)
– he uses a variation of long and short sentences (e.g. It would do)

The Last Wild

History

As you will found last week, Henry VII (Henry the Seventh) was the first Tudor king. He was also known as Henry Tudor. Before Henry VII became king, there was long civil war between the two rival houses: The House of Lancaster (represented by a red rose) and The House of York (represented by a white rose). This war was known as the War of the Roses.

Richard III was king before Henry VII. Henry fought Richard in a battle (known as the Battle of Bosworth).

Spot the mistakes

“He’s here,” she shouted at the top of her voice. Her mother smiled gently as she placed the plastic crate on top of the table. Amy peered into the the dark space between the bars. Suddenly, a high pitched bark came from the inside of the crate. The door burst open followed by a small bundle of fur.

Alex has also had update on her butterflies – which all, but one, have emerged now:

4 of her 10 stick insects have hatched too. They’re quite small at the moment but could grow up to 10cm long!

Before you start your questions, I would like to point out that butterfly caterpillars don’t “climb” into their chrysalis, and that after the caterpillar sheds its final skin, the layer beneath it actually hardens over time to form a chrysalis. Moth caterpillars form a cocoon around themselves by spinning silk around themselves. Anyway, scientific accuracy aside, here are your questions:

1.) What scared the caterpillar at the start of the clip?
2.) What do the other two insects do to help the caterpillar into its chrysalis?
3.) Why do the two insects have to stay on the rock?
4.) How do you think the “caterpillar” feels when it emerges as a butterfly?

You can use today’s video for inspiration. You can write your story in first person (as if you were the butterfly or something watching the butterfly) or in third person.

This is likely to take slightly longer than most writing tasks, so it can count as today’s and tomorrow’s task.

Science

Following on with the butterfly theme, today’s science task is to draw the life cycle of a butterfly. It would be great if you could include pictures and a description of what happens at each stage.
