Forest school

In Grasshoppers, the children will continue to have a Forest School session, with Mrs Rollings.

This will be on a Monday afternoon, starting on Monday 18th September.

The class will be split into two groups, which will alternate each week.

Please can all children have a waterproof coat in school for break times and Forest School.

Children coming to school in PE shorts may want to bring some long leggings or tracksuit bottoms with them to wear during Forest School but we do have waterproof trousers available to wear as well.

I will send an email to say which group your child is in and when their first session will be.

Many thanks.

Spelling Shed, Numbots & TTRS Homework

As part of your child’s homework they will have access to Spelling Shed, Numbots and Times Table Rock Stars.

Your child has their log in details for these games in the front of their yellow reading records.

Numbots and Times Table Rock Stars have the same log in details.

Children in Year 1 can use Numbots. Year 2 children should continue on Numbots and after Christmas can begin to use TTRS as well.

Spelling Shed will help your child learn the ‘Common Exception’ words that they need to be able to read and spell by the end of Key Stage 1. It will also help to support them with spelling words containing all the sounds and letter patterns from Phases 2 – 6.

I can see how many times each child has accessed these games throughout the week and so will check on a Thursday that children are completing Spelling Shed and Numbots.

If you have any problems accessing any of the games, please get in touch.

Hopefully, you all feel refreshed and ready for the new school year ahead!

Please find below some information about the ‘Grasshoppers’ class.

Monday – Thursday, the class is taught by Mrs Nicky Morris.

On a Friday, the class will be taught by Mrs Claire Wright.

Grasshoppers will be supported in class, at various times, by Mrs Markall, Mr Smith or Mrs Robinson.

This year, we have 26 children in class: 22 Year 2 children and 4 Year 1 children.

PE Days

Monday: Gymnastics & Dance (Indoor PE kit)

Friday: Games (Outdoor PE kit)

Water bottles

Please can water bottles be plastic, not metal and they must have non spill spouts. Children need to have a clean water bottle in school every day.

Bags and Coats

The children will need one bag for their belongings which will be placed in the cloakroom at the start of the day. They will bring their reading book, reading record and water bottle into the classroom only. There will be a box outside the classroom for lunchboxes to be stored.

Children must bring a warm, waterproof coat every day. They will be going outside at playtime whatever the weather.

Please ensure that all belongings are named, especially school jumpers, cardigans, coats and bags.

Hair

Long hair (below shoulder length) should be tied back. Hair should be kept out of children’s eyes using headbands or clips.

Trinkets and toys

Please can you ensure that the children do not bring into school trinkets or other small toys from home.

Reading

The children will be expected to read regularly throughout the week and have their record signed by an adult.

The children must bring their reading record and reading book to school every day. They need to bring them into class and place them in the blue box.

Homework

Homework is reading, learning the spellings for their year groups and learning their times tables. To support them to do this they will have access to ‘Spelling Shed’, ‘Numbots’ and ‘Times Table Rock Stars’.

I will give the children log in details for these and put more detailed information about spellings and times tables at the beginning of term.

(You can also find our school ‘Homework Policy’ on the school website.)

Please look out for regular updates on the Grasshoppers page of the school website. Here you will find reminders, photographs and information about the curriculum we follow in class.

All this information can also be found in the ‘Information’ section on our Grasshoppers class page.

Art Work

Grasshoppers have created some brilliant art work this year. We have really enjoyed being inspired by the artists we have focused on such as Paul Klee, Stephen Wiltshire, Lottie Reiniger, Mary White and William Morris.

Grasshoppers – Forest School – Monday 10th July

As Monday will be the last Forest School session of the school year we will be taking the whole class.

Please could the children wear or have with them clothing that will cover their arms and legs. The forecast shows some light rain for Monday afternoon, at the moment, so please could the children have a coat available.
Many thanks

Tractor Visit

Yesterday afternoon, Grasshoppers were treated to a visit from Mr & Mrs Preece and their two tractors.
A 71 year old Ferguson and a John Deere, for the children to have a look at and compare. They were able to ask lots of questions about the two tractors and took to the seats to try them out for size! This complemented our work this term on farming.
The children also spent some time sketching the tractors.

Thank you very much!

Bodenham Arboretum trip

On Wednesday, Grasshoppers went on their class trip to Bodenham Arboretum, in Kidderminster.

Our day began with a guided tour of the arboretum with Sandra, Forest School leader. She talked to the children about all the different species of trees, some native and some non-native. We continued our tour with a visit to the working farm, which sits in the middle of the arboretum. The children enjoyed looking at all the animals. We looked at the old and new barns and Sandra talked about how farming methods have changed over the years.

We then walked over to the Forest School site for a session there. The children had a wonderful range of activities to choose from. Den building, bug hunting, clay modelling, weaving, natural printing with leaves, mud kitchen and rope climbing. They also toasted bread on the camp fire and had it with jam or honey from Sandra’s bees. After our session, we sat around the fire pit and had our lunch.

After lunch, we said goodbye to Sandra and went on our own walk before heading back to the coach.

We really enjoyed our day!

Bodenham Arboretum trip

Please ensure your child is prepared for the hot weather forecast tomorrow when we go on our class trip to the arboretum.
We will be outdoors all day so the children will need sun cream applied before they arrive at school. Please clearly label water bottles, sun hats/caps and lunch boxes.

We will try to keep in the shade as much as possible.
Many thanks

Class Trip – Grasshoppers

Our class trip is next week, on Wednesday 14th June.

Please can I politely remind parents/carers that the consent form and payment are due to be returned to school by Monday 12th June.

Many thanks,

Mrs Morris

Marmalade Loaf Cake

In English, Grasshoppers have been listening to Paddington Bear stories. We have also been learning about the famous landmarks of modern London after exploring how the city changed, after the ‘Great Fire’. We have enjoyed seeing these landmarks in the stories of Paddington.

This morning, some of the Grasshoppers made two marmalade loaf cakes.
They went down very well, with the children happy to have a second piece!

I hope you all have a wonderful Easter break.

Fire Service Talk

Yesterday afternoon, the Grasshoppers were very lucky to have a visit from Mr Bloore from West Midlands Fire Service.

We explored the fire fighting methods in 1666 compared to modern day. We also looked at how fire engines, uniform and equipment has changed and developed over the years.

Mr Bloore brought in his uniform for the children to look at and try on! We agreed that it is very heavy and hot to wear and that fire fighters do an incredible job in our communities.

The children were also taught about dangers and hazards in the home and the fire safety technique –  Stop, Drop, Roll.

We would like to thank Mr Bloore for his time visiting us, we really enjoyed the afternoon.

Gymnastics

Grasshoppers have been doing some brilliant gymnastics, this term. I’ve been really impressed with their focus and determination. They have also worked very well with their partners and supported each other to achieve the correct body position and helped each other to make improvements.

Homework – Grasshoppers

Please see the guidance below, taken from our Homework Policy, for what the children should be completing for their homework, each week.

We check the activity of each child on Spelling Shed and there are very few children accessing this, in order to support them with their phonics and spelling patterns.

Please email: grasshoppers@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk if you can not access Spelling Shed, Numbots/TTRS. The children should have their log in details in the front of their blue reading record.

Many thanks

Nativity – Lines/Costumes

Our nativity, this year, is called ‘A King is Born’.

All the children in Fireflies and Grasshoppers have been given their parts.

If your child has brought home lines please could you help them to learn them, as soon as possible.

We have lots of costumes in school for children to use, but we will let you know if your child needs additional items or a costume that we haven’t already got.

Many thanks,

Mrs Morris & Mrs Fox
