Pants for Karibuni are on their way!

I thought I would update you with regards our collection of 311 pairs of pants for our school charity Karibuni – all 311 pairs were posted to Joy Murphy at the weekend and have arrived in Aylesbury this morning!  They will then travel over to Kenya on 3rd February when Joy heads out there on her annual visit!

Joy has messaged today to say:

“I was about to go to Keep Fit when the postman arrived with a big box of 311 pairs pants!

Thank you so much to you and all the staff and children for caring so much. They will certainly go to good homes – the children will be delighted to receive them.

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

Good Morning Brown Clee!

Yesterday we focused on the value and meaning of LOVE, within the contexts of friendship.  We thought about our school’s Bible verse: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind and with all your soul” as well as the second greatest commandment “Love Your Neighbour as Yourself”.

Today I would like us to continue to reflect on the significance of LOVE – and more importantly God’s love.  Christians believe that God’s love is great and that his love will never run out.

I want us to carry out an investigation this morning – I want you to imagine that this piece of paper is all of God’s love. So in this investigation, this piece of paper with 4 corners represents God’s love.  Let’s just count the corners – do you agree that there are 4?

If I was to give some of God’s love to someone – it would be like cutting off a corner.  So if I give a corner away – how many corners would be left?  Shall we see – I’m going to cut a corner of love off and give it to …… because they have brightened up my day with their smile this morning and it really cheered me up!

So we had 4 corners and we have given one away – so we should have 3 corners left – shouldn’t we?  Let’s check……oh…..we have now got 5 corners!  That’s odd!  Normally when we subtract our numbers get smaller – but this time they are getting bigger!

Let’s try it again – how many corners do we have? – 5 – ok let’s cut a corner of love off and give it to someone – here you are ….. a corner of love because you have been so helpful this morning, it has made me feel appreciated. So I had 5 corners, and gave 1 away – how many corners should I have now? I think it should be 5 – 1 = 4 – let’s check…..oh – I’ve got 6 corners?  That’s really odd!

So the more of God’s love that I give away – the more that is left behind?  Let’s see if it does the same if I give another corner of God’s love away – here we go…..I’ve now given 3 corners of love away – but how many corners do I have left?………7!

Each time I give a corner of love away I end up with more corners of love!

Christians believe that God’s love never gets less and it never will. His love goes on and on. Everyone of us has love to give away. When we show someone love and kindness, that doesn’t mean that we have less to give! In fact, as we love more, we seem to be topped up with more love so that we can give it out to even more people. The more love we give away, the more there is!

Let’s take a moment to reflect – have a think about how you can show love to others – so that we can all grow more love.  I wonder what sort of world we would live in if everyone gave away more love?

Dear God,
Thank you that your love is for everyone.
Thank you that your love never runs dry.
Help us to receive your love and also to share your love with others.

Updated Self Isolation Rules

Changes to the self-isolation period for those who test positive for COVID-19

This change came into effect in England on Monday 17 January and applies to all positive cases, regardless of vaccination status.

People who are self-isolating with COVID-19 have the option to reduce their isolation period after 5 full days if they test negative with an LFD test on both day 5 and day 6 and they do not have a temperature. For example, if they test negative on the morning of day 5 and the morning of day 6, they can return to their education or childcare setting immediately on day 6.

The first test must be taken no earlier than day 5 of the self-isolation period, and the second must be taken the following day. All test results should be reported to NHS Test and Trace.

If the result of either test is positive, they should continue to self-isolate until they get negative results from two LFD tests on consecutive days or until they have completed 10 full days of self-isolation, whichever is earliest.

The new rules also apply to people who are already isolating – so if someone was already isolating before Monday 17 January, they can take LFD tests on day 5 and 6 and if they are both negative and they have no temperature they can end their isolation.

Anyone who is unable to take LFD tests or anyone who continues to have a temperature will need to complete the full 10-day period of self-isolation.

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

Good Morning Brown Clee!

Yesterday we were continuing with our thinking about FRIENDSHIP and we created our own recipe of what we thought would be the best ingredients to make a good friend.  We then discussed what we thought the most important ingredient was – and I suggested that it is LOVE.

Can you remember why I suggested that LOVE should be the main ingredient for being a friend?…..

It’s because in The Book of Matthew 22:37, we learn that the greatest commandment (also known as a rule!) is that we should “Love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our mind and with all our soul” – so therefore Loving God is the most important rule of all.  But also, following this verse it also says that the second most important commandment is ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ – what do you think this means?

My thought process starts with the question – what is the meaning of the word “neighbour”? …  A neighbour is whoever is next to you – so anyone you sit next to, or live next to – anyone really other than yourself!  And the rule is telling you to Love them – the same as you love yourself – which makes me think about the value of RESPECT – which is treating others as you wish to be treated.  So maybe God is telling us to show others love through treating them with respect?

Love is a very complex value – and there are lots of different types of love – we love our parents and family, but we can also love our friends – because love means that we care and have respect.  So as you go through the weeks ahead, try and ensure that you are thinking about how your actions and words can impact on your friends…..and we will think more about that tomorrow.

Let’s take a quiet moment to reflect on how we can be better friends to everyone – to all our neighbours – think about how you would like to be treated…..and do you treat others the same way?

Thank you for how good it is to have people who love us, and people whom we can love.

Operation Playground Clean-Up!

A massive thank you to our team of volunteers this morning, who have shovelled, scraped, raked and brushed – as well as some very handy pressure-washing – to clean up our KS2 playground!  The team effort has made a big difference to the cleanliness of the playground, and many of the children also commented on how much bigger the space now looks as well!

We are aware that there are other parents who also offered but were unable to help today – we really appreciate the offers of support!  As a small, village school, working as a community is really important for jobs like these, when we don’t have a caretaker – so thank you from all the children and staff!

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

Good Morning Brown Clee!

I hope you’ve had a good weekend and are ready for another busy, fun week of learning!  Last week we started to think about our Christian value of this half term – FRIENDSHIP: we discussed the importance of trust, and we watched some stories from the Bible that demonstrated different aspects of friendship.  Today I want us to continue reflecting on FRIENDSHIP and thinking deeply about what it actually means – as sometimes I think we can take it for granted.

I’d like to start with us remembering our Mission Statement – “We are a Learning Community that nurtures and empowers everyone to be the best we can be” – we are very used to thinking about how we can try our best in our lessons, but do we think about how we can be the best person we can be?  What would it mean to “be the best friend we can be”? …..enjoy watching this short video from Disney which shares some great friendship over the Disney years!  Have a think about what makes the characters such strong friends – what ingredients do they need to make their friendships work?

Did you spot some of your favourite Disney friendships?  And did you think about what made them such good friends?  If you could make your own character recipe – what ingredients would you put into the mix?  I’ll start you off with some ideas then have a chat in class and see what else you’d put into your Friendship mix…

  • A jar of kindness,
  • A spoonful of listening,
  • A can of honesty,
  • 1kg of forgiveness…..
  • …….over to you!

How many ingredients did you put into your friendship recipe? I’m sure there were loads as Friendship takes many forms – but I wonder what the one main ingredient is, that without, it might mean the friendship doesn’t last?…..Remember we might all have a different idea – but for me – I’d have to say ‘LOVE’ – as if we remember what God’s greatest commandment is – “Love the Lord Your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind” – I think God is telling us to simply love each other – and tomorrow we will think a little more about what this might mean.

Let’s take a quiet moment of reflection – think about your friendship recipe – do you think you have all those ingredients?  Have you got any missing, and if so what can you do about it so that you can be the very best friend you can be?

Numbots and TTRS Certificates

Numbots and TTRS certificates will be given out in class – as there’s quite a lot… but well done to all of those that do get one! Remember, TTRS certificates are given out to anyone who improves their studio time since the last well-done assembly, and Numbots certificates are given for each completed stage on Story Mode, as well as the top three pupils with the most levels completed. Starting from this week, we will also have certificates for the top three pupils who answer the most questions correctly on TTRS. Certificates this week include games played during the Christmas holidays.

Parent Work Party Help Needed!!

We are putting a call out for parents to join us for a work party on Monday morning ( 17th January) to help clean the junior playground.  As you can see it is filthy with mulched leaves and debris from the trees, and not only does this make it very slippy for the children, but it is also extremely dirty – as you can probably tell from your childrens’ shoes!

If you can spare an hour or 2 after drop off on Monday – the weather is dry between now and then which will give the mulch time to dry a little – then please can you come and help.  You’ll need a stiff brush, rake or shovel, and we will also need a pressure washer (with a very long hose-pipe) – if anyone has one?!

Unfortunately we do not have a caretaker, but we hope that with a bit of community spirit and muscle power, we will be able to give the children a clean, non-slip playground!  We will provide refreshments!

A massive well done to all our year 1 phonics group – as today they have managed to work together and achieve GOLD  – top of the school league – on Spelling Shed!!  Well done everyone – I am very proud of you!  Let’s see how long we can stay there!

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

Good Morning Brown Clee!

This week we have started to think about the importance of FRIENDSHIP – we have reflected upon the importance of trust, and of listening to friends.

Today I’d like you to think about what you think is meant by the word FRIENDSHIP – how could you define it?  Have a moment to think about it…..then share your thoughts – and remember you might all have a different idea!

In the dictionary it defines FRIENDSHIP as “Having a good relationship
with somebody we call a friend, showing friendship to others.”  Have a watch of this video – about a little boy and his father who run a llama pinata business (in case you’re not sure what a pinata is – its a fancy container that is hung up at parties and when beaten releases sweets) – see how many words you can come up with from watching it, that can describe what friendship means…..

How many words did you come up with – have a share in class, and then I will share mind……

I came up with lots – the story made me think of companionship, fun, helpfulness, kindness, warmth, encouragement, support, teamwork, joy, laughter, happiness, dependable, special, caring – all positive words that help make the world a better place.

So as we go through this term I want us to focus on the importance of having friends – and also of being a good friend.  Imagine a world without friends – what a lonely place that would be!  Let’s see how many different ways we can be good friends to each other so that we can help make the world a happier place.

Let’s take a quiet moment now to reflect – what have we learnt about friendship – what does it mean – how important is it? At the end of the story – the llama pinata seems to have made the little boy’s father a happier person – so maybe friendship is infectious – maybe by being a friend to others we can help make the world a friendlier place –  what do you think?

Dear God

We thank you for our friends and for the happy times we share with them.

Help us to be a good friend to them.

Teach us how to play fairly and to share.

Help us to recognise loneliness in others and show friendliness towards them.

Today’s Roast Dinner – Yum!!!

We thought you might like to see the delicious roast dinner that Pippa (we are delighted to have Pippa back with us again as school chef!) and her team have cooked for the children.  The roast pork filled the school hall with the most delicious smell that made us all hungry and the children thoroughly enjoyed their lunch!

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

Good Morning Brown Clee!

Today I want us to start thinking about our Christian value for this half term – which is FRIENDSHIP.  On Monday we learnt about the importance of trust – trusting in God and also trusting in our friends through the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and the Fiery Furnace.

Today I have got a quiz for you – your teacher is going to read out the questions one at a time. Each question has two possible answers and I want you to vote for the answer that you prefer by putting up their hand.  Here we go….

  1. What would you rather do at playtime: play football or sit on a bench and chat to your friends?
  2. What do you prefer to do with your friends: play on a games console or go swimming?
  3. If your best friend was away, would you sit on your own for a day or go and sit by somebody else?
  4. If there was a new child in your class, would you ignore them or go and play with them?
  5. If someone was being mean to you in the playground, would you hit them or go and tell a teacher?
  6. If you had fallen out with your friend, would you go and tell everyone else how horrible your friend is or try to make up?

You all had choices to make in the quiz, all of them to do with friends. In the first three questions, the choices that you made were up to you – your answers depended on your personal likes and dislikes. However, in the last three questions, you could have made a good choice or a bad one with your answer. The choices that you made could either help you to get on with your friends or cause you to fall out.

I now want you to watch this story of Mary and Martha from the New Testament Book of Luke in the Bible….as you watch, have a think about what we can learn from the story…

What did you learn – did the story help you think about somethings that you could do better – some better choices that we could all make?  Here are some questions to help you think…..

  • Why did Martha feel so cross with Mary in the story?
  • In the story, Jesus told Martha that it was sometimes good simply to sit and listen. Why is it important to listen to our friends?
  • How can listening to our friends help us not to fall out?

Let’s have a quiet moment to reflect – think about the importance of listening to friends – ask yourself whether you notice your friends enough?  Do you pay them attention when they are with you?

Dear Lord,
Thank you for today’s story about listening.
Please help us to make time to listen to others.
Please help us never to be too busy to notice those around us.

Children can start school in Reception at the beginning of the academic year following their fourth birthday. If your child was born between 1st September 2017 and 31st August 2018 they can start school in September 2022.

301 Pants and £100 for Karibuni!

We  wanted to say thank you to everyone for your donation of Pants or Pounds to our school charity, Karibuni Children – as you have sent in a total of 301 pairs of pants and donated £100!  These are being taken out to children in Kenya in February, when Joy Murphy, one of their trustees, is hand delivering them!

We hope Joy has a big enough suitcase and we look forwards to seeing the photos as the pants are distributed.  Fresh, clean underwear is something that we all take for granted – but so many children in deprived areas of Kenya don’t have the luxury of a clean pair of pants each day – so these are really going to make a difference!

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

Good Morning Brown Clee!  I hope you’ve had a good weekend and are refreshed and ready for another busy week of learning!

Last week we started to think about choices – and how we are responsible for every single choice we make – whether it is a new year’s resolution or something as simple as which socks to put on today.  We also learnt a strategy for helping us to make the right choice – the one with the traffic lights – where we stop and pause before responding or acting.

Today  would like to continue with this theme – as making the right choice isn’t always easy.  I would like you to watch this video retelling the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and the Fiery Furnace from the Book of Daniel in The Old Testament – have a watch and think about what choices these 3 friends made, and why they made it…

….have a think now about the decision that Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego made – it wasn’t an easy one and was very brave – why did they choose not to worship King Nebuchadnezzar?

Do you think they were brave and was there anything that helped them to be courageous?  Do you think they would have made the same decision if they were on their own? What might have helped them to make their choice?  Was it the right choice and why?

I think that because Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego all trusted God, they followed the words of our school’s Bible verse from Matthew “Love the Lord Your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind” and made the right choice not to worship anyone other than their true God – even though they knew they risked being thrown into a blazing fire – and as a result God saved them.  Their trust in God and their strong faith and friendship helped them to stay true and make the right choice.

As a result, they survived, and more importantly their faith and trust had a powerful impact on King Nebuchadnezzar who exclaimed “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, the one true God. These men trusted him and refused to obey my commands and he did not forget them. I now forbid anyone to say anything bad about their God and I am also going to promote these men.’

Let’s take a moment to reflect and think about what we can learn from this story today?  …..

One thing we might learn is that having friends we can trust, who will stand with us in difficult situations, is really important. It’s like the saying goes: ‘If you want a good friend, be a good friend.’

Christians believe that they can trust in God. They believe that he will never let them down or leave them.

Who do we trust today?

Dear Lord,
Thank you that we can trust you, whatever situation we find ourselves in.
Please help us to be people whom others can trust.
Please give us people whom we can trust.
Please help us to be good friends to those around us.
Please also help us to forgive when needed.

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

Good Morning Brown Clee!

Here we are already at Friday in the first week of the Spring Term!  There is no Well Done Assembly this week as it has been such a short week – so instead we will continue with our thinking about choices – and how important it is to persevere to try and make the right choices, even if it is easier not to.

Today we are going to watch the Pace Trust talk to us about Perseverance and Complacency – 2 big words – have a listen and see what you can learn from it…

So which one are you more like – King Solomon or Simon Peter – are you going to start well but give up when it goes wrong – or are you going to pick yourself up when things go wrong and persevere?  I know which one I would like to be like!

We all make mistakes – we all mess up – there is a well know saying “To err is human” – and how true is that!  As we all make poor choices at times – we all get things wrong (err – means to make a mistake!) – but the best choice you can make is to pick yourself up and have another go – to keep on going – to try again.  Sometimes it isn’t that easy – and that’s when we can talk to God and ask fir his help.

Prayer of the Day

Dear God,
Please help us to be able to persevere when things are tough.
Please help us to realise that we don’t need to do things on our own.
Please help us to be willing to ask for help.
Thank you for all the people who support and care for us.
Please help us to look for opportunities to help others.

Update on PCR / LFD tests

Confirmatory PCR tests to be temporarily suspended for positive lateral flow device (LFD) test results

Confirmatory PCR tests following a positive lateral flow device (LFD) test result are to be temporarily suspended from Tuesday 11 January. This will mean that anyone who receives a positive LFD test result will be required to self-isolate immediately and will not be required to take a confirmatory PCR test.

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

Good Morning Brown Clee!

It was so lovely welcoming everyone back yesterday and see everyone’s happy smiley faces and hear their cheery greetings!  We are straight into the Spring Term and I know that some of you have now set your own targets or resolutions following yesterday’s assembly.  Mine was to drink more water each day – as it is so important to keep my body healthy – so I have set myself the target of drinking all my waterbottle each day – something that I regularly failed to do in the past!

Taking care of ourselves is so important – and even though we have family and friends to help us do this, ultimately it is down to ourselves to learn to be responsible for making good choices – whether those choices are about our well-being and health, or our learning. Everything choice that we make is up to us – not anyone else.

Today I want us to think about responsibility – Being Responsible is one of our 3 school rules – and it involves making the right choices.  Have a watch of this video about making the right, or good, choice….and have a think about what you can do to help you make good choices…

So what have you learnt about making good choices?  Is there anything you can do to help make a good choice?

I learnt that you need to stop and take some time – to pause before saying or doing something – to THINK about what would be a good choice.  Have a think about a time when you have made a poor choice – what did you choose and what happened because of it?  Now think what you could have done to help you make a better choice…..

As you go through the day, see if you can try the traffic light method – and STOP – PAUSE and Breathe – then THINK – and make a good choice!  I wonder if it will help you have a more positive day?

As we come to the end of our assembly, let’s take a moment to reflect  – We all have a lot of choices to make every day – some small, some bigger. How will you make your choices today and who will you talk to when you have big decisions to make?

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

Good Morning Brown Clee! I hope you’ve had a good 2 week holiday and that you feel refreshed and ready for a new term. Not only is today the beginning of a new term but  we are also at the start of a new year – we are now in the year 2022! You will probably have heard many people wish you a ‘Happy New Year’! – as this is often a time when we think about new starts and make new promises to ourselves – do you know what these are called?

They are New Year’s resolutions – a resolution is a promise to ourselves to make a change, an improvement or a new start, when we turn over a new leaf!  Our resolution might be to work harder at school, to watch less TV, to keep our bedroom tidy or to do more exercise.  Have any of you made any resolutions?

The tricky thing is often sticking to them and keeping them going!

I’m going to share some examples of new year’s resolutions with you – have a listen and a think:-

Resolution 1: Meet Mike – Mike’s resolution for 2022 was that he was going to improve his football. He would practise hard every week and not miss any training sessions, even early morning ones in the rain. He would score brilliant goals and make his team proud of him. He might even become a football star!  Then this happened:

What do you think has happened? How is Mike feeling? What could he do now?

Resolution 2: Meet Emma – Emma’s resolution for 2022 was that she was going to control her anger. Her brother kept annoying her, her big sister kept teasing her and her mum was always on at her to tidy her room. She decided that she would count to 10, stay calm and let it all wash over her.  Then this happened…

What do you think has happened? How is Emma feeling? What could she do now?

Resolution 3: Meet Skip. Skip is a lovely dog, but he has an unfortunate habit of chewing the furniture, among other things. His owner’s resolution for Skip in 2022 was that Skip was not going to chew the furniture, the cushions, the football or Dad’s paper, even though it might be much more fun! Instead, Skip’s owner would train him to chew only his bone and the old slipper in his bed.  Look what’s happened…

What do you think has happened? How is Skip feeling? What could he do now?

In all these resolutions, things went badly wrong for Mike, Emma and Skip – they broke their resolution – so they now have a choice: they can either give up, or get over it and start again.   What do you think they should do?……

……absolutely – they need to get over it and just start again!

New starts are not easy. A new start suggests that there is something to put right or to improve, some area in which we may have struggled with before. At first, we might have a lot of enthusiasm and be encouraged by small successes. However, as time goes on, we might forget and stop trying, so that before we know it, we have given up. We have failed to achieve our hopes, which can often lead us to think that it’s all doom and gloom.

But it isn’t – when things go wrong – we just need to shake ourselves off, pick ourselves up and start again!  Trying to make a new start is always worth it….it’s the only way that we can learn.  Can you think of some words that you know that mean this?

So try and remember, as you go through the year ahead – that no matter how wrong things may go, no matter what mistakes you make – you just need to pick yourself up and start again – persevere!

Should they give up on their resolutions? Or should they get over their failure and make a new start?

What about your resolutions? What will you do if you forget them or make a mistake?

Dear God,
Thank you that each new day is a day full of opportunities.
Thank you that each new year is full of opportunities to try new things and to have a fresh start.
Please help us when we make mistakes and fail to achieve our hopes and dreams.
Help us to shake off any doom and gloom and get up and get going again.
Amen.

School Lunches next term

The menu for next term has been uploaded to ParentPay and you are now able to book any meals which your child may require right up until Easter.

If your child requires a meal on the first day back in school (Wednesday 5th January 2022) please remember that you can only book meals up until 2 days before the day the meal is required and ensure that you book this on Monday 3rd January at the very latest.

Don’t forget all children from Reception to Year 2 are entitled to a free school meal under the Government’s Universal Infant Free School Meal Scheme.  If you still haven’t activated your child’s ParentPay account contact  the school office in January and they will be able to provide a copy of this.

If you think that your child may be eligible for Free School Meals and they are in Year 3 and above you can apply on-line at Apply for free school meals | Shropshire Council .

Thank you!

Thank you very much for your kind donations of pants or money on Wear One Thing Christmassy Day.  We have received many pairs of pants and also the brilliant sum of £83.50 which we will send to Karibuni to help with their work.

A Miracle In Town!

Grasshoppers would like to present their performance of ‘A Miracle In Town!’ We have really enjoyed learning the songs and preparing the different scenes. We hope you all enjoy watching it.

Fireflies’ Nativity 2021

The children in Fireflies have enjoyed learning about ‘The First Christmas.’ We have put together a simple version of  the Nativity (with a few current day anecdotes.) We have been extremely impressed with the children’s motivation and perseverance. We hope you enjoy watching it as much as they did!

Christmas Carol Service and Christmas Crib Service

St John the Baptist Church will be holding their Christmas Carol Service on Sunday 19th December at 11.30am and will be joined by the Group Choir.

The Crib Service is being held on Christmas Eve at 4pm.  Hear the Christmas Story and then go home and prepare for Father Christmas.

School Photographs

The photographer has delivered the individual photographs this morning and they will be sent down to class for your child to bring home.  Due to supplier stock shortages beyond their control some orders may be missing 7×5 photographs and he apologises for the inconvenience.  However, they will be delivered to school on Thursday of this week.

Lost Property

Our lost property box is bursting at the seams with items of school uniform, socks and other clothing that have been misplaced around school.  We will be putting the box out on the playground at the end of the day, as well as encouraging children to have a browse so that we can return the clothing items to their rightful owner.

If the items were named, we would be able to return the clothing directly – so a helpful reminder of the importance of naming uniform.

Please do check the Lost Property Box – and you can always ask the children about what will happen to any items not claimed!
