School Games Award – Platinum

We are delighted to announce that we have achieved the School Games Platinum Award for this academic year (2021-22).

The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in
2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward and recognise school’s engagement (provision and uptake) in the School Games against a national benchmark and to celebrate keeping young people active, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

The Platinum award is the highest School Games Award available – with very few schools having being awarded this so far – and requires schools to have achieved the School Games Gold Award for the previous four consecutive years. This along with a school case study into how the impact of the school’s engagement with the evolution of the School Game is taken into consideration for the judgement before being awarded.

For those interested, our case study for this year has been to “Demonstrate how you have embedded positive experiences of competition into your offer and how this has made a difference to your uptake”, to which we focused on girls’ engagement with the competitive events available – something which they have absolutely flourished at over this academic year!

Girls’ Rugby Taster Session

Any Year 6 girls interested in giving Rugby a go – this has been shared by our Sports Partnership.

WHITTLES DELAYED

Whittles bus is unfortunately running late (approximately 20 minutes) due to a replacement coach being needed.

Summer Holiday Activities

Our sports partnership has recently shared this information on activities available over the summer holidays.

Here is also some additional information from Shropshire Council on a wider range of activities available across Shropshire: HAF SUMMER 2022 – What’s On – including some information on some free places on holiday activities (Who Can Access the Free HAF Programme).

P.E. Evaluating Running

Year 5/6 have recently been using video analysis to evaluate their own (and each other’s) running techniques over short and long distances.

Scorpions Residential Trip – Payments

For those wishing to pay for the trip by cheque, they will need to be made payable to Brown Clee CE Primary School Fund.

Rounders Tournament – Tuesday 7th June

Just to clarify, for those children taking part in the rounders competition after half term, they will need to be picked up from Oldbury Wells School (not from Brown Clee) at 5:00pm on Tuesday 7th June.

Both practices on Friday 27th May and Monday 6th June will take place at Brown Clee.

Tag Rugby – School Games

Following on from our success in the East Shropshire Tag Rugby competition, our winning team took part in the tag rugby county finals in this year’s Summer Games. Check out the team in action below:

Tag Rugby Success

Today, 24 pupils from KS2 took part in a tag rugby competition at Swancote (Bridgnorth Rugby Club) – making up three teams competing.

All the children showed fantastic focus, determination and teamwork throughout the whole competition.

Our C team finished in joint third position in the plate (second competition) – with our B team winning this competition. Our A team were undefeated throughout and eventually went on to become the overall main competition winners!

Brown Clee were also one of two teams voted by the sports leaders officiating the event as “consistently demonstrating the sporting value of Respect” throughout the competition – something which, alongside their impressive finishing positions, all the teams should be additionally proud of achieving

.

As the overall winners of the East Shropshire Tag Rugby Competition, the A team will have the opportunity to represent East Shropshire in the Summer Games (date to be confirmed).

P.E. – Scorpions – Next week

Next week, P.E. will be on Monday (first day back) and Wednesday.

Also, a reminder for those attending Tuesday’s tag rugby, the letters given out before Easter need to be returned on Monday.

Dragon Heads – Art

After a few weeks working on these, Year 5 and 6 finished their dragon heads this week.

The process involved first shaping chicken wire. Then, layering and shaping plaster of Paris to the desired form.

We then used a variety of different techniques to create texture through scales and colour.

And finally, here are the end pieces:

Dragon Eyes – Rory McCann Artist

Rory, the artist who painted the mural at the front of the school, spent some time with Year 5 and 6 painting some dragon eyes. Check out their work below:

Viking Experience Day

Today, Year 5 and 6 had a Viking experience day – where they were able to look and explore some Viking and Anglo Saxon-type pieces of equipment and clothing.

Check out some photos of the day below:

Running Challenge – Spring Term

Here’s an update on each class’s running challenges for this term.

Fireflies

Fireflies are attempting to run the distance from Ditton Priors to Shrewsbury (the birthplace of Charles Darwin) – 22.3 miles – as many times as they can.

Grasshoppers

Grasshoppers are attempting to run the distance of the Sydney Harbour Bridge (in Australia) – 1,149 metres – as many times as they can.

Dragonflies

Dragonflies are attempting to run the length of the Shropshire border – 497km.

Scorpions

Scorpions are attempting to run the distance from Nordland (in Norway) to Lindisfarne (the first known Viking raid of a monastery in England) and back – ~2,000 miles.

P.E. this week – Year 5/6

P.E. this week will be on Wednesday and Friday for Year 5/6 – and not the usual Tuesday and Thursday.

Girls’ Football – BES

Last Thursday, 18 girls from Years 3-6 took part in a recent girls’ football at Bridgnorth Endowed School.

All the girls showed a fantastic level of commitment, determination and teamwork throughout. The teams’ performances were particularly impressive given the number of Year 3s and 4s we had taking part in a Year 5/6 competition- and our unfortunately diminished team sizes (with 2 teams having to play with only 6 players against 7).

KS1 Cross Country – 24.03

For all of those in Grasshopers attending Thursday’s (24th March) cross country, we have been asked that parents do not arrive on site (Oldbury Wells School) until after 15:40 – to allow for Oldbury school transport, parents and children to leave at the end of their school day.

The first event (which will be year 1 girls) will be beginning at 16:15, so please ensure children arrive before this to allow for getting ready/ in position for race start.

Myself (Mr Harley) and Miss Lewis will be in attendance to help organise children to their races. Once your child has finished their race, they can leave (if you wish), but please inform me when you do.

The current race order is Y1 Girls, Y1 Boys, Y2 Girls, Y2 Boys, and the last race is due to finish at 16:45.

Any questions before then, please feel free to email (scorpions@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk).

Request: Spare Shin Pads

We have a girls’ football competition this week  – which requires players to wear shin pads. A lot of our players do not have shin pads. If anyone has any spare or do not mind lending a pair (to be returned), it would be very much appreciated!

The tournament is on the afternoon of Thursday 17th March, so any pairs brought in before then would be fantastic.

Dragon Heads – Art

Year 5 and 6 have been looking at some creating some early sketches of dragon heads before they begin making their own dragon head sculptures.

Scorpions – P.E

P.E. this week will be on Thursday and Friday – and not the usual Tuesday and Thursday.

ESSP Swimming Gala – William Brookes

Ten Pupils from Scorpions and Fireflies took part in the East Shropshire Sports Partnership swimming gala at William Brookes School this Thursday.

All the swimmers showed fantastic determination, team-spiritedness and confidence in helping Team Brown Clee to eventually finish in an incredible second place overall – an especially impressive feat given the small size of our school!

Scorpions & Fireflies – Shared Reading

Every Thursday, Scorpions and Fireflies spend some time together sharing some reading. Here are some pictures of their first session of this half term from yesterday:

Scorpions – D.T. – Viking Longhouse

In D.T. this half term, Year 5 and 6 have been looking at creating their own Viking longhouses in small groups.

After exploring the typical structural framework used by the Vikings, each group were given a collection of materials and tools to design and then make their own prototype versions.

Check out some of the early stages of this below:

TAG RUGBY POSTPONED

Unfortunately, following a pitch inspection at Swancote, today’s tag rugby event has been postponed due to the condition of the pitches following the heavy rainfall.

It will now take place on Tuesday 26th April.

Tag Rugby – Swancote – Pick-up time

Just a quick clarification message for those children attending next week’s tag rugby competition: they will need to be picked up at 4pm from Swancote (BRFC).

Scorpions – Runic Shape Poetry

Year 5 and 6 have recently been exploring Viking runes and their meanings. Based on this, they have created their own shape poems. Check them out below:
