CCTV Installation

Due to an increase in rural crime and also the new neighbouring housing developments (which will increase the number of entry points to the school site), we have made the decision to install CCTV cameras so that we can monitor the site when not occupied.

World Book Day – 2025

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this year’s World Book Day.

Children spent time in mixed-up classes – and completed various different reading-based activities throughout the day.

Comic Relief – Friday 21st March 2025

We are looking to raise some money for Comic Relief. For this, the children can come into school in their own clothes (with something red). We are requesting donations for this event as it will be raising money for Comic Relief; however, the amount is entirely up to you.

As part of the day, children can also bring in their own joke – written on piece of paper with their name on. The joke doesn’t have to be an original one. Teachers will be picking their top 20 jokes – which will be shared in assembly and the top joke (by volume of laughter it generates) winning a prize! This year, we would like to invite any parents, carers, grandparents etc. to join us for this assembly at 2:30pm. This will be replacing our usually celebration assembly for the week.

In addition to our own fundraising, we are also helping the BBC Radio Shropshire Breakfast show with their own fundraising event – which involves pushing a 5ft nose over Shropshire’s three largest hills (Stiperstones, Titterstone Clee and Brown Clee). Before they start the last leg (Brown Clee), they will be visiting the school and beginning their push from the school playground, where the children will cheer them on. This will be taking place the day before (on Thursday 20th March).

Staff Changes Next Year

Just a (very early) update on some changes that will take place with our staff ahead of next academic year.

Mrs. Parker, who currently teaches Scorpions, is expecting her second child. She is hoping to continue working at Brown Clee up until the end of the academic year (i.e. July), but this will be close to her due date.

Mrs. Brescianini, who currently teaches in Grasshoppers on Fridays, is going to be spending some more time working for her family business – so will be also leaving us at the end of this academic year (i.e. July).

This will mean there may be some changes to class structures. We will keep you updated on this as it progresses, and we have more specific information on plans and appointments.

Reading in Dragonflies

Over the past couple of months we have been developing the reading areas in our classroom. In discussion with the children, the books have been re-organised and four quiet areas have  been established with new lighting, cosy rugs and cushions. The children have been enjoying sharing books with their friends and taking responsibility for keeping the areas clean and tidy.

Break/Lunch Time Changes

We are exploring in school how we can improve the overall experience of play at break and lunch.

This initially started as merging KS1 and KS2 together for break and some investment into specific activities (e.g. table tennis table and large-scale Connect 4) as well as providing a Y6-led activity at morning break for KS1 and a competitive activity during lunch for KS2.

This year, we are looking at how we can further enhance this experience. Following the heads of school council visiting a school (that have begun implementing a more ambitious approach to play), we are currently investigating some changes. One of this has been the addition of music to a section of the playground. Our sports leaders have also begun getting some of the scooters/go karts out so that KS1 pupils can play with these at breaktime.

This week, we are going to try out another idea from the school council – which is to lengthen break time (from 15 minutes to 30 minutes) and shorten lunch break (from 60 minutes to 45 minutes). This will mean that the children will still get the same amount of “break” but spread differently. KS1 will still get their usual afternoon break.

We will be soon exploring way in which we can improve the school grounds/space to enable a broader range of activities at break and lunch (potentially including nature area, quiet reading area, construction area, creative area – along with other ideas). If anyone has any particular skill sets / resources that could help us with any of these, it would be massively appreciated.

FOBCS will soon be planning a playground tidy up. Again, any volunteers for this would be really appreciated.

Co-opted Governor Position

We have a couple of co-opted Governing positions available at school.

A co-opted governor is any person who, in the opinion of the governing body, have skills that could contribute towards the effective governance of the school.

This person does not have to be parent/carer (but can be).

If you know anybody that would be interested in joining the governing body – and could bring a particular skill set – if you/they could get in contact with the school (admin@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk), it would be greatly appreciated.

Further info on school governance can be found here: https://next.shropshire.gov.uk/school-governors/volunteer-as-a-governor/

World Book Day – 6th March

World Book Day, this year is on Thursday 6th March. Children are encouraged to come to school dress as character from their favourite (or any) book/story – and also bring along the book (if the have it); however, we appreciate that not all children will enjoy “dressing up”. If so, they can come in their own clothes. As this is not a charitable fundraising event, no donation are being requested.

During the day, the whole school will be mixed up into different groups and take part in a range of different reading/book-themed activities throughout the day. From 2:30pm, all parents, carers, grandparents etc. are invited to come to school to listen to their child(ren) and any others.

Potential Uniform Options

At this point, any proposals are only under consideration – and nothing has been confirmed. Whatever is decided, ALL current uniform options CAN be continued to be used alongside any new options (for as long as is needed).

As you may have been aware, our uniform supplier (Lads and Lasses) has been having some issues with the printing on our 1/4 zip top – and have proposed changing this top to another option to prevent this moving forwards.

Current top:

Proposed top (logo would be present):

This top does seem to be of better quality but will unfortunately be slightly more expensive. Since the introduction of a hoodie option, this top has been the (significantly) less popular option .

Alongside this, we have had requests from a few parents for some particular additional options and some minor issues that we could resolved or improvements that can be implemented at the same time.

  • The first is to change our current t-shirt (green w/ white logo/lettering) to green w/ black print. We have found that black print remains clearer and less likely to crack for much longer than white.
  • The second is to add a full-zip hoodie (black with green logo/lettering) alongside the current options. Some children prefer this type of top. This type of top can also easily be purchased as an unbranded option for those that may need to.
  • The third is to change our current hoodie (black with green logo/lettering) to green w/ black print (please not the sample top below has the wrong logo colouring). This could be a change or an addition.

Although the additional options should allow much more choice and flexibility for parents/carers, we are having to consider how increasing the range of option may cause stocking issues for Lads and Lasses (as more options mean more stock having to be in place for them – especially as a small school).

As mentioned, all existing uniform options will be useable for however long you wish.

A reminder that FOBCS do have a second-hand uniform “shop”. If anyone does wish to “purchase” any second-hand uniform for a small donation, please get in touch (admin@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk). Equally, if anyone does have any uniform they wish to donate to the FOBCS uniform stock, please send this into school.

If you wish to provide some feedback on the potential increase in options, please fill in the following form: https://forms.office.com/e/h80x8JGf2B

A busy week in Dragonflies!

We have also carried on with our learning about the geographical features of India and have been putting the final touches to our Indian dance in PE.

After-school Clubs – Potential Price Reduction

Given the successful uptake with our increased provision with before-and-after-school care club and after-school clubs, we are looking into whether we can reduce the price of our before-and-after school clubs. Some clubs (such as cookery and creative arts – due to their cost to run) will have to remain the same.

We are looking at reducing care club to £1.25 per 15mins and most after-school clubs to £4.50. This will be provisional for next half-term. At the end of which, we will review whether it will be viable longer term.
