The Whittles bus has been delayed as there is a tractor broken down by the water tower.  He will get to the school as soon as he possibly can but it is very likely that the children who catch this bus will be late.  Whittles phone goes over to emergency calls after 3.30pm but you can still contact them as calls will be diverted to a mobile number.

Only joking – it’s April the 1st today – which is also known as April Fool’s day, where traditionally people can try and trick others – but only up to Midday!  A good April Fools’ trick depends on catching your victims unawares. They must have no idea what’s about to happen. What’s funny is the look of shock, horror and surprise on their face. That’s why it’s no good repeating a trick or recounting the story hours later. It’s the immediate reaction that matters.

The Easter Story has a bit of an April Fool trick in it – imagine the looks on the faces of Jesus’ followers on that first Easter Sunday morning. These were men and women who were grieving. Two days earlier, they’d witnessed the most important person they’d ever met being executed in a brutal and lingering manner, and then buried in a cave tomb. They were deeply depressed. They seemed to have no future. However, on the third day – what we call Easter Sunday – some of them discover that the tomb is empty. Mary, one of the women, even meets Jesus, who has come back to life after being dead, although she doesn’t immediately recognize him.

The Bible relates that initially, there is fear and confusion as the story of Jesus’ resurrection spreads like wildfire among his followers. They don’t understand what has happened. The impossible has taken place. Then, as the reality of the situation takes hold and as they each meet Jesus in the flesh, any doubt is removed. They are left with an overwhelming sense of joy, optimism and hope.

In the Bible story, surprise follows surprise. It’s the greatest April Fools’ trick of them all. Except that, Christians believe, it is no trick. This is the real thing. Christians believe that Jesus overcame the greatest fear of humankind: death itself. Nothing can hold him back.

Life is full of surprises. Sometimes, they’re welcome ones: meeting a friend you thought you’d lost touch with, a surprise gift, sunshine on a rainy day, winning a raffle prize or finding the solution to a problem. Sometimes, they can be unpleasant surprises: bad news, a surprising failure, a last-minute change of plan or being let down by someone you trust.

So, how do you cope with such unpleasant surprises? Initially, common reactions might be to sink into a mood or react in anger, to freeze dumbstruck or to flap around in confused activity, just like the followers of Jesus. The Easter story encourages us to consider that there may be another way….a better way!

Dear God,
Thank you that you are always with us.
Thank you for the great surprise of Easter.
Thank you that Jesus came back to life and is alive today.
Thank you that you promise always to be near us.
Help us to remember that we can talk to you at any time of the day or night.
You are always there to listen to us.

Good Morning Brown Clee!

Yesterday we enjoyed Reverend Terry leading our assembly on Microsoft Teams, where we learned more about the Easter Story, and thought about how Jesus died to save us all, and to give us hope – which linked to our theme on Monday, of trying to focus on the positives and be hopeful when facing challenges.

Today I would like us to think about this wonderful world that we live on!  Can you think of something that make it so wonderful?  I wonder if any of your ideas are depicted on our new school mural?

There are so many wonderful places, animals and sights on this fantastic planet – we need to take care of it. Our planet is a living planet; it is not simply a place where humans live, but where animals live, too. Earth itself appears to have a life and a spirit, as expressed in volcanoes, earthquakes and the awesome power of nature.

Yesterday Mollie shared her thoughts about how we can look after this wonderful world…(you need to listen really carefully as the volume is low!)

So as we go forwards, can we try and think about what we can do in school to ensure we do our bit in looking after the world – every single small action can make a big difference if everyone did it!  Enjoy again the words of David Attenborough as he introduces his new series – “A Perfect Planet” – and marvel at the wonders of this beautiful world and reflect on what we can do to care for it.

Earth is indeed a perfect planet – and we have a responsibility to keep it that way for generations to come.

Prayer of the Day

Dear God,
Thank you for the beauty of the world.
Thank you that you made it for us to enjoy.
Please help us to take our responsibilities seriously.
Please help us to protect the world for future generations.

Help us to take care of, and appreciate,
the wonderful world you created for us.

Can we please remind parents to park considerately at the start and end of day, both in the school parking areas (so that we don’t block anyone in) and in the local area (so that we don’t park or block residents’ driveways).

In yesterday’s assembly we thought about rules, and learnt how in the Bible, God’s rules are called commandments, and that Jesus said that the most important commandment was “Love the Lord thy God, with all your heart, all your mind and all your soul”.

What do you think this means??    ……….

What do you think “Loving God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind” means now?  Can you share some examples?

The Bible teaches that God ‘so loved the world’ and therefore as they believe that people are made in God’s image, Christians also believe that people are made to love both God and others.  I think that we all can show love to God by aspiring to live by the values he teaches us, such as friendship, kindness, compassion, helpfulness, respect – can you think of some more?

So in a way – if we were to just follow the rule of “Loving God”, if we put that first, everything else should fall into place.

As you go about your day, try taking a moment to reflect on how have you shown that you are “Loving God” through your actions and words……have you helped a friend when they are hurt or sad?  Have you made someone smile or feel better?  Have you said thank you when someone has done a good deed for you?  There are so many little ways to show that you are following the most important rule!

Thank you, God, for all those who love and care for us.
Thank you that your love reaches to the highest heaven, and to the deepest ocean.
Thank you that there is nowhere I can hide or run to, but your love is already there.
Please help us to be people who give love, as well as receiving it.

Good Morning Brown Clee!

There are definitely signs of Spring in the air – the daffodils are blooming, there are lambs gambolling in the fields and everywhere you look in nature, you can see signs of new life!  Even the grass is growing!  It is an exciting time – as the lighter and warmer days along with the new life offers promises of hope and optimism….fresh starts and new beginnings.

It is also the time of year when we start to reflect on the Easter Story, as next Sunday (28th March) is Palm Sunday, when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey.

Well today I want you to listen to the story of Jesus and the Donkey….but I want you to join in….

When you hear the word “donkey” I want you to say “heehaw” and make your hands into ears.

When you hear the word Jesus I want you to shot “Jesus” and punch your hand in the air!

When you see the crowds cheering and praising shout the word “Hosanna” and  wave your hands as though they were holding large branches from a palm tree!

This story happened at the beginning of Easter week. On Palm Sunday, Christians especially remember Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem on a donkey. By the time we get to Good Friday, we will be remembering the death of Jesus. It didn’t take the people very long to stop cheering Jesus, and instead turn their backs on him. On the Sunday that follows Good Friday, called Easter Sunday, we will be remembering that Jesus came back to life again.

Prayer of the Day

Let’s spend a moment thinking about that week. It started with a great parade: everyone was singing and shouting that Jesus was someone special, that he was the Son of God. However, later that week, the religious leaders who didn’t like Jesus spread rumours and made the crowds shout that they wanted Jesus dead. They created so much fuss that Jesus was killed by the Roman soldiers.

What they didn’t realize was that this was all part of God’s plan. Jesus would come back to life and the world would be changed.

Dear God,
Sometimes, we don’t understand it when difficult or sad things happen.
Help us to remember that you are always there for us.
Thank you that you always care.
Please help us to trust you.
Amen.
