Potential Link Between Autism and Screen Time

The technological world is forever changing and we often find it difficult keeping up with the effect it has on day to day life.   We know the risks that the internet poses in terms of E-Safety and that Online Safety is really important – but do we realise the impact of children spending hours on a screen can have on their development, particularly in the early years – it can actually affect brain development.

Some recent studies have shown the relationship between excessive screen time and autism behavioural symptoms. Excessive screen time can result in:

  • deficits in social behaviour
  • changes in brain structures
  • decrease in parent/child communication quality and quantity
  • language delay
  • hyperactivity
  • social isolation

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under the age of 2 years old have no exposure to screens and that screen time for 2 to 5-year-olds be limited to 1 hour per day. Yet despite this, most young children are exposed to screens more than this. In one study the average daily screen time of preschool children in the United States was found to be as high as 4.1 hours.

Listening Skills / Problem Solving Skills

This half term, as part of our work with Skills Builder Partnership, we are focusing on teaching children about listening skills and problem solving skills.  These are both vital for children (and adults!) to succeed in life. Below you will find some useful resources and links to how you can support your child to learn these two skills.

Teaching Children Essential Skills

Brown Clee School works with The Skills Builder Partnership to ensure every learner has opportunities to build eight essential skills to support them now and in the future.

Research has shown that building these eight essential skills can support the emotional wellbeing and academic success of children and young people, as well as preparing them for life beyond school. Skills Builder has developed a Universal Framework that breaks each of these essential skills down into 16 teachable steps. We use this framework to teach and practise each of the eight skills at the appropriate level throughout school life.

Skills Builder has a resource platform dedicated to helping parents and carers to build their child’s essential skills at home: Skills Builder Homezone: www.skillsbuilder.org/homezone

From Weekly Skill Challenges, to family activities and guidance to share with older children to access independent tools for their own skill development, Skills Builder Homezone can be enjoyed at a time and pace to suit all families.

Watch out for upcoming posts which will share which skills your child is learning this term along with links and ideas to how you can support at home.

New Catering Subcontractor

Our Catering provider (Entrust) are changing their school meals service from Chartwells to Edwards and Ward. This will involve no change in catering staffing in school; however, there is going to be a change in price. Here is some information from Entrust explaining this:

Due to food and wage inflation continuing to affect the catering industry,  the meal price when we return in September will be £2.83.

The contractor, Edwards and Ward has done what it can to mitigate the effect of food inflation whilst producing school meals to the governments school food standards. This has included product swapping raw materials and changing menu choices, but food inflation stubbornly continues, above published headline rates of RPI & CPI.

While the governments headline inflation rate has dipped in recent months, the food price inflation for May 2023 is 18.3%, with specific food type increases of 27.4% for milk, cheese & eggs, 19.8% for vegetables and 16.3% for meat, all of which are fundamental raw materials used in school catering. Added to the food inflation affect, the government mandated increase of 9.7% national minimum wage increase from April 1st this year and the impact of the Harpur Trust court ruling, also has directly impacted the school meal price.

The caterer expects no further price increase until at least April 2024 and will continue to monitor inflationary effects each month and are committed to investing in different ways to minimise these effects.

Thank you for your understanding.

KS2 Performances

As you will all be aware, all of KS2 have two upcoming performances. With the afternoon performance on Wednesday, the performance will fit within normal school timings. The evening performance on Tuesday, however, begins at 6:00pm. To allow time to change into costumes, Children should arrive at school from 5:15pm and all should be at school by 5:30pm. If watching the performance, you can go into the hall ready for the performance once you have dropped your child off. If you are simply dropping your child off, the performance will be finished at around 7:15pm and children should be ready to be picked up again by 7:30pm.

If, for whatever reason your child may not be able attend the evening performance, please can you let us know as soon as possible – as we may be able to work together a plan.

The Year 5 and 6 children are continuing to have a great time at Arthog – they are very busy with their activities, including gorge walking, rock climbing and their night walk.

They are all also eating and sleeping well – so very happy children!

Arthog

We have had a message from the Arthog team and everyone is having a great time!

The groups have been doing canoeing, rock climbing, surfing and gorge walking and they did a night walk last night. Tonight they have done the nightline (which you can see in the photo).

There have been no homesickness episodes and the night porter has actually commented on how it’s the best nights sleep he’s had at Arthog! There have been lots of positive comments about manners too, with the kitchen staff saying that it’s the first group where every child has said please and thank you!

We are very proud of them all and am sure they will continue to have a great time! I have been asked to share that it is really full on and there aren’t many spare moments, so parents please do not worry if you don’t hear anything.
