Mice Bubble

We have enjoyed bridge building, this week. The children tested the strength of four different types of bridges before using what they had learnt to design their own bridges. We then used weights to test the strength. Archie’s bridge was the strongest, holding 5kg 800g!

We have been enjoying the lovely weather, having our lunch outside. In this photograph, the children are wearing the animal masks that they have made ready for Archie’s Kenyan challenge.

More maths

Please find below some additional maths work for those children that may feel confident with the daily lessons and feel they need more of a challenge.

There are sets of work for each area of maths that you could give your child, to see if they can tackle it independently.

There are also some greater depth maths tasks to have a go at, if you wish.

The Titanic

Sam and Mollie have a relative who composed a piece of music called The Sinking of the Titanic. Here is a clip of the piece of music:

Here are the orchestra performing the piece:

When composing this piece he interviewed two ladies who survived the disaster. One of the ladies was 9 years old when the ship sank, she escaped on a lifeboat but unfortunately her father stayed on the ship and didn’t survive. The other lady also got into a lifeboat and comforted another child with a music box she had with her.

Sam and Mollie had a talk on Zoom with Gavin Bryars the composer. They asked him lots of questions about the Titanic and his wonderful music.

Thank you Sam and Mollie (and Mum!) for sending us this fascinating information!

Seaside Leaflets

The children in the ‘Mice’ bubble have worked really hard, this week, on their seaside leaflets. They have thought of the name of their town, drawn a map to show the layout and decided what seaside features they were going to include. They then designed the front cover, wrote about some of the features and drew pictures to go with them. Well done everyone, they look great!

Testing our boats

This afternoon, the children tested their boats to see if they would float and if they could hold any weight.

All the boats floated very well but Archie’s held the weights for the longest amount of time before letting water on board. After talking about our designs the children agreed that next time they would make the hull of their boats deeper so that when weight was added they didn’t sink. The boats were more like rafts.
The children were keen to make another one!

Boat Making

The ‘Mice’ bubble have been making their boats this afternoon. They selected the materials they thought would be best for a boat and then drew their design, before making their boats. When completed, they will test their boats in water to see if they float, to check how stable they are and if to see if they can hold any weight. They will then think about what they could do to improve their design and what they would do differently if they made another boat.

Hello!

Hello Class 2!

I hope you are all very well and have had an enjoyable week. It has been strange for me being back in school after such a long time and it is all so different! I have really missed not being in our classroom, teaching all of you.

I hope you have enjoyed some of the ‘Weekly Activities’, that I posted on Monday. Thank you to those children that have sent me their work to look at.

Parents – If you have a minute, please could you let me know how you found the ‘Weekly Activities’. Did you have enough to keep you going or would you like more next week? Maybe there are certain types of activities that you’d like, as they work better for you at home. Thank you!

Have a lovely weekend everyone, let’s hope this rainy spell doesn’t last too long!

Friday Forest School Acivity

Hi everyone! Hope you are all well. I know those of you not in School at the moment are busy with the weekly activities Mrs Morris has set.  I am providing a Friday Forest School Activity for you to do if you would like to. This week I have taken inspiration from your brilliant work on The Titanic. It does involve a little water so make sure you are with an adult when you test it out! Have fun!

Mrs Cains

Leaf and twig boats

Challenge your family to a raft race with your own handmade boats.

  1. Collect some twigs roughly the same length.
  2. Place them in a line and fasten them together with string or long grass.
  3. Slot an upright stick into the base of your raft – this will be your mast.
  4. Thread a leaf or two onto the stick to make your sails.

When they’re finished, try your rafts out on the nearest puddle or stream. Make sure you have an adult with you and be careful.  For an extra challenge why not add some cargo? Load small pebbles or stones, do they still float or do they sink with the added weight? Have a competition to see which boat can travel the fastest or furthest.

Take a photo or draw a picture of your raft or boat.

Weekly Activities – 1.6.20

Good morning to you all! I hope you have had a lovely, relaxing half-term break with your families and enjoyed the glorious weather we have been lucky to have.

As you know, it’s going to be a little different from this point forward as I will be back in school teaching and so I won’t be able to post ‘Daily Activities’, as before.

I will be posting ‘Weekly Activities’ for you to dip into. Please don’t feel that you have to complete everything, as before, just do what fits in with your family circumstances.

Please continue sending your lovely work and activities to me. Miss Greenan is going to post photographs on the class page and I will still read and respond to your emails. It will just take me a little longer to reply, as I will be in class during the day.

I hope you all have a great week!

Daily Activities – 22.5.20

Good morning Class 2!

As you will know it is the start of half-term so you will have a break from work next week.

After half-term, some of us could be going back to school. Albeit, in a very different way and therefore remote learning for the other children will look a bit different too. As soon as I know how this will look I will let you all know.

Thank you very much for all the fantastic work and activities you have done at home during the first half of the Summer term.

Also, a big thank you to all the parents who have worked so hard helping you to do your work and for sending it to me, along with photographs. I have over 200 PowerPoint slides with all the different photographs on, that you have sent me!

Maybe we can think of the day that you can all be sat on the carpet, side by side, looking them and remembering the very strange months when we couldn’t see one another. What a happy day that will be!

For now though, I wish you a lovely half-term with your families.

Stay well, stay happy & play the days away!
