Class 4 – Activities at home – 26.03.20

Before you start today, check out yesterday’s answers.

As always, you don’t have to do these activities at a set time or in a set order – that’s all up to you.

There will be 3 hive games today:

Game 1 (slightly easier) – 1:00pm – 594304
Game 2 (slightly harder) – 1:10pm – 799752
Game 3 (hard) – 1:20pm – 388369

You can join any of these hive games at any point; however, the game will not start until the time above, so make sure you’re ready to join in time.

Problems of the day

A quick heads up for question 3 on the blue sheet – as we hadn’t yet covered this at school this year yet – the angles inside a triangle add up to 180°. The inside angles in a square are 90°. If you’re not sure, it doesn’t matter – you don’t have to complete every question – but it’d be great if you gave it a go.

Challenge of the day

Today’s challenge is a variation on a famous puzzle called “Einstein’s Riddle”.

To help you with this puzzle, here’s a grid to help structure your ideas:

What you need to do is work out:
– Which man lives in which house?
– Which man drinks which drink?
– Which man has which pet?
– Which man has which job?

I’d also suggest drawing a row of five boxes (each represent each house) to help with this – as the houses in the grid above are not in the correct order. You’ve got lots to work out with this challenge – so be patient!

5 Houses Problem

5 Houses Problem Frame

Sentence / Fragment / Run-on

Remember, a fragment is part of a sentence (or an incomplete idea) and a run-on is when there are two (or more) sentences not separated by a full stop, semi-colon, colon or dash.

1.) He’s over there!
2.) I love ham, I hate cheese.
3.) If you’re going out, make sure you lock the door.
4.) The cat’s got out again, make sure you bring him back this time.
6.) Running as fast as he possibly could.
7.) Silently, the shadow crept in through the window.
8.) He jumped.
9.) The princess, wearing blue trainers.
10.) Who noticed I missed out question 5?

Writing

You should all be close to finishing your newspaper article. When you do, you can have a go with this:
choose a character from any book, story or film and write a small (about half a page) character description about them. You can draw a picture of them if you like. Your character doesn’t necessarily have to be human.

P.E.

Keep sending me your attempts at the P.E. challenge!

Art/Dance/Music

This one is very open ended. I would like you to produce a piece of art (which could even be dance or music) on whatever you want using whatever you want. It could be a drawing, painting, a sculpture, a piece of music being played, a dance, a picture made from leaves or whatever you can come up with.

Be as creative as you wish!

Remember, if you missed an activity from a previous day, and feel like doing it today, you can do so and send me a picture. I’ll keep updating the class page with all your fantastic work which is being sent in!

I hope you’re all doing well. Hopefully, we’ll all be back in school as soon as possible!

Challenge of the day

There could be other solutions – but I haven’t seen any yet.

Did anyone notice anything about the starts of each of the names in each puzzle?

Here’s some examples of the correct answers sent in:

Sentence / Fragment / Run-on

1.) Sentence
2.) Fragment (subordinate clause)
3.) Sentence
4.) Fragment (could be an adverbial phrase or verb phrase – I think…)
5.) Fragment (adverbial phrase)
6.) Run-on (This was is really hard because I forgot to put the “friends” in the second clause – however, it should still be two separate sentences. I’d separate them with a dash, a semi-colon or a colon – rather than a full stop though.
7.) Sentence
8.) Run-on (full stop/semi-colon/dash instead of comma)
9.) Run-on (full stop/semi-colon/dash after “food”)
10.) Fragment (noun phrase)

Here’s some of yesterday’s work that was sent in:

Anna James – The Bookwanders Club

I’ve just heard that Anna James (author of Pages and Co. – which I know a few of you have read) is having a book club on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays live at 2:00pm on her youtube channel – where she will be joined be joined by guest authors, who will be discussing all things books.

Her first guest is Robin Stevens (author of the series A Murder Most Unladylike – which, again, I know a few of you have read!)

P.E. Challenge Update

Here’s my attempt at today’s PE challenge (or should I say Lexie’s).

I’ve had a few videos in. If you can keep sending more throughout this week and next, I’ll start posting them on the website (if you’re happy for me to). If you want to send in more than one video, please feel free. The most I’ve had so far is 40 from Alex with a tennis racket and ball!

Results from today’s hive game

Game 1: top 3
1.) Elliot
2.) Bebe
3.) Leia

Game 2: top 3
1.) Samuel
2.) Bebe
3.) Leia

Remember, these Hive Games will only show the top 3 – not everyone taking part.

I’m going to trial doing the hive games a different way tomorrow. There will be three games – each game will get slightly more difficult. You can take part in as many as you like – as they all start at different times. The times and codes for each is below

Hive Game – 25.03

The code for the first of today’s Hive Games is 935340.

This game will start at 13:10 – so make sure you are at the waiting screen at that time.

As soon as that game finishes, there will be a 2nd (much harder game) – which will start 5 minutes after the 1st ends. The code for this game will be 741806 – don’t join this game until after the first as this game will start later.

Morning update

Here’s some more work from yesterday sent in by Chloe and Ellowyne

Challenge of the day update:
Miss Relph has already sent in the correct answer to the first part of our challenge!

Also, Mrs. Fox has discovered that Audible (Amazon) are offering access to hundreds of free audiobooks! I’ve spotted three great books in there already (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, White Fang and Anne of Green Gables). There’s no sign-up required – just head to https://stories.audible.com/start-listen.

There will be another Hive Game this afternoon: the code will be up at 12:55pm and the game will start at 1:05pm – make sure you’re on the waiting screen at 1:05pm (otherwise you’ll miss the start!!)

As always, if you wish, send me in any question or pictures of what you’re doing at home.

Updated EBM answers from 24.03

George Ba spotted couple of mistakes on Q8 and 9 on the answers to yesterday’s EBM. Here’s an updated version:

Class 4 – Activities at home – 25.03.20

Before you start today’s work, check out yesterday’s answers.

As always, you don’t have to do these activities at a set time or in a set order. There will be another hive game – same time as before: the code will be up on the website at 12:55pm and I will start it at 1:05pm.

We could do with some more running/walking distances to reach our target – we still have 400 miles to go!

Challenge of the day

Before you start this one, the circles are the “nodes” and the “edges” are the lines between the circles.

If you finished the first, have a go at this one:

English

Sentence / Fragment / Run-on

Remember, a fragment is part of a sentence (or an incomplete idea) and a run-on is when there are two (or more) sentences not separated by a full stop.

1.) The fox stood proudly.
2.) Until Alva gets here.
3.) Are you there?
4.) Running quickly.
5.) As quick as a flash.
6.) She’s my best friend, we have been since I was 5.
7.) Whilst you’re swimming, your brother will be playing hockey.
8.) There’s a snake in my shoe, I hope it’s not poisonous.
9.) Pizza is my favourite food it tastes delicious.
10.) The plant, which was a eerie shade of purple.

Writing

Some of you have finished your newspaper articles. If you haven’t sent me yours yet, I’d love see them.

If you do finish your newspaper article, you can have a go with this: choose a character from any book, story or film and write a small (about half a page) character description about them. You can draw a picture of them if you like. Your character doesn’t necessarily have to be human.

P.E.

You have two tasks for P.E..

Task 1

Your first is to research any sport (e.g. sprinting, skiing, badminton, shot put, swimming, show jumping) and design an exercise circuit.

Here’s two examples of circuits (the first for netball and the second for football):

Think about:
–  what type of exercises they would need to do for their sport
–  how long they need to do each exercise for (do they need short fast bursts or longer slower one)
–  how many activities you wish them to do (aim for at least 7)
– how you’re going to show this (you could draw pictures with small captions next to them)

Task 2

Your second task is a physical one. You need to film yourself keeping a ball in the air without it falling to the ground as many times as you can and send me the video – and the amount of times you kept it up!

The rules:
– you have to be hitting the object to keep it up (you could be using your arms/hands, head, feet, a tennis racket, a cricket bat or a combination of more than one thing)
– you don’t have to send me the first video you do – you can have practice goes
– the ball can be any size you want it to be . If you can’t use a ball, you can use something which is like a ball – except for a balloon…

Here’s a clip of tennis player, Rafael Nadal, keeping up a tennis ball (yours doesn’t need to be this good!)

Here’s a clip of footballers, Neymar and Messi, keeping up footballs.

If you can’t send a video, a picture would be fantastic instead!

Keep up the fantastic work – and keep on sending me what you’ve been doing at home – I especially look forward to seeing your PE challenge attempts.

Remember, the game will start at 13:05, so make sure you’re in at that time to play. You can join halfway through the game if you miss the start though.

Lunch time update

I have another hive game planned for today.

It will be the same time as yesterday’s: the code will be up at 12:55 and the game will start at 13:05. For those who have already emailed me today or yesterday, I will also send the code to those email addresses.

I have a had few questions about the Geography work for today – this will take quite a while to complete (I’d say at least an hour).

I’ve had some brilliant ideas and suggestions about the challenge questions – well done to Ben, Alex and Samuel who had some particularly creative solutions. Same as yesterday, I will post the relevant answers to all of today’s activities tomorrow morning for you to check. If you email me in your work, I can help with any errors then and there

This was the start of Alex’s working for the challenge question about the farmer:

We’ve also had another newspaper article in – have a look at Elliot’s below:

Check out Ellowyne’s fantastic newspaper article – especially if you’re stuck for ideas with your own.

Class 4 – Activities at home – 24.03.20

These are today’s specific activities – click any pictures to enlarge them, or you can use the pdf version link next to the pictures. There’s no set time or order you need to complete these in; however, we will do another a hive game on Spelling Shed at 1:05pm – I will post the code needed to join 10 minutes before at 12:55pm and then post the results when we have finished.

Any relevant answers will be posted tomorrow before the day’s activities.

Remember, you should also be reading your book and using TTRS, Spelling Shed and ReadTheory throughout the day – see the class’s information page for info on this.

It would also be great if you could complete some running/walking each day – which, if you could email me your distance, I can add to our termly running challenge . We have completed 756km (470 miles) so far – meaning we are on our return journey back to Norway and have 644km (400 miles) to go.

Thats when it happened. Thats when Sophies worst nightmare becomed a reality.

Writing

Continue with your newspaper article – remember this is going to take a while, so don’t rush it! If you think you have finished, go back and check it for mistakes and think about how you could improve it.

Remember, if you have any questions whilst writing this, then please don’t hesitate to ask. As soon as any of you send me any, I will post them on the website to help inspire everyone else!

Geography

Your task for geography is to try an draw your own version of a map of the world. Think carefully about how big each land mass and oceans/seas should be. You can be as creative as you wish – your map can be an accurate/detailed version or you can try and do it in your own style (for example a cartoon version).

If interested, this video here explains how tricky it is to make an accurate 2D version of the world – due to the earth being a spherical – and why this means there are many different versions of maps.

A bonus question:
What do you call someone who makes maps?

If you have any questions/queries or you would like to share anything you have done at home, you can send emails to me at any time. Also, if you missed it, I have set all of Class 4 up on their on emails: see here.

I hope you’re all doing well. Hopefully, we’ll all be back in school soon as soon as possible!

Does anyone think they can catch up with George R’s incredible time of 0.58 seconds per answer?!

Snail in the Well – Challenge Questions

I’ve had some answers for today’s challenge question; however, no-one (apart from Alex – who got there in the end with some help) has got it correct yet.

Look at that score from Archie B in Class 2!!

Hive Game – Results

We’ve just completed our first hive game from home. It worked reasonably well and we had quite a few taking part!

Here’s today’s top 3 (based on score):
1st Place – Elliot – 617,976
2nd Place – Chloe – 573,918
3rd Place – Samuel – 108,042

Just so you are aware, the hive game will show the top three scores – not everyone like it does at school.

The game will start in 2 minutes – so if you want to play, make sure you’ve entered your code.

Well done Class 4. I’ve already had lots of questions and some fantastic maths work sent. Some have already even accessed their own accounts which I had set up. They can access their own email account by going to Office365 or you can download the outlook app on a phone/iPad. Their email address is lastname.firstinitial@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk (e.g. jones.s@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk) and their password will be Password 123 – which they will have to change.

Well done to George R – who sent in his EBM before I’d even had a chance to check the website!

I haven’t seen a correct answer to the challenge question yet though – though Alex has got very close!

I’ll post all of the answers to today’s work on Class 4’s page tomorrow morning. If you wish to send any work in or have any questions, then send me an email at class4@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk

Remember, we’ll be trying a hive game at 13:05 (not sure if it’ll work…). I’ll post the code at 12:55.

Also, if you could email any distance you run/walk and I’ll add them to our total for our running challenge!

Sentence / Fragment / Run-on

Remember, a fragment is part of a sentence (or an incomplete idea) and a run-on is when there are two (or more) sentences not separated by a full stop.

Decide whether each of these below is a sentence, a fragment or a run-on:
1.) The blue and white cottage on top of the hill.
2.) If you have the time.
3.) Can you pass me the salt?
4.) Before you go, make sure the dog has been walked.
5.) My favourite sport is swimming, we don’t get to go often.
6.) The dog loved ham sandwiches, she would always get told off for eating them though.
7.) My sister, who is called Ellie.
8.) My sister is called Ellie.
9.) When the door opens.
10.) When are you going to get here?

Writing

Your writing task in English will likely take the whole week. You need to design and write a newspaper article on the video we watched a couple of weeks ago (Pigeon Impossible). If you can’t remember, here is the video again:

Remember, if you have any questions whilst writing this, then please don’t hesitate to ask.

Science / Design Technology

Your task for science is to design (through investigation) something which takes the longest possible time to fall. Have a think about all the things we have discussed in science about gravity and air resistance to help you with this and be a creative as you wish!

Once you have designed your “product”, time how long it takes for your object to drop (from a height of exactly two metres) three separate times and email me your results. Feel free to send in any pictures of your investigation and your “product” – whatever it may be.

If you have any questions/queries or you would like to share anything you have done at home, you can send emails to me at any time; I will respond to these between 10:00 and 12:00. Also, if you missed it, I have set all of Class 4 up on their on emails: see here.

I hope you’re all doing well. Hopefully, we’ll all be back in school soon as soon as possible!

Class 4 Emails

As you are aware, work will be being set each day and found on Class 4’s news page, and any work to share or questions/queries should be sent to class4@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk – a response will be received between 10:00 and 12:00.

With the age of the children in Class 4, it would be great if they could be sending any work in to share and questions they may have themselves – rather than parents having to do this. To help facilitate this, I have set up each child with a school email address. For safety, these accounts have been set up so that they cannot receive/send emails from/to outside of school and can be monitored. If you wish to still send emails from another account, then that is also absolutely fine!

To access their accounts, they need to go to https://www.office.com/?auth=2.

To login in, their username is in the format lastname.firstinitial@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk.
For example, “John Smith” would be smith.j@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk.
Their password will be Password123 – which they will be asked to change when they first log on. If any passwords are forgotten, then please let me know as I can reset them.

The other great thing with these accounts are that children can contact each other – meaning that during this period, they can still keep in touch!

Tomorrow’s activities will be on the website by 09:00. I look forward to seeing everyone’s work.

Class 4 – P.E. Kits

All Class 4 children should come to school in their PE kits tomorrow – they do not need their school uniforms.
