Home Learning – Friday 8th January

Good morning Class 2 and parents,

As I said yesterday, Miss Jones will be responding to your work today but I will still be looking at all your lovely work too.

I hope you have a good day and some of you might get some snow, if you haven’t already.

Have a great weekend!

Billy and the Minpins book

Some of you have said that you are going to buy the book that we will be working on, Billy and the Minpins by Roald Dahl. If you are thinking about ordering it, Maisie’s mum let me know that you can get it on Amazon for £3.99 (Kindle Edition) or on the ‘Books4us’ website, it is £3.99 for the paperback.

Please don’t feel like you have to get a copy, as I will post each chapter as a video as we work through the book.

Home Learning – Wednesday 6th January

Good morning Class 2 and parents,

I hope you are all very well. I’m very sorry Class 2 that we can not begin the Spring term in school together as normal but we will keep positive and do our best online! We will still cover all the topics that we had planned and I’m sure you will enjoy learning about them.

Please find below an overview of the curriculum we will be covering this term.

Curriculum Overview Spring Term

Below is the timetable that we would follow in school which we will try to stick to from next week. It may help the children to look at the timetable to see what subjects they will have each day.

Timetable Class 2 2020-21

Daily Learning

I will send an email each morning to you by 9.00am with a link to the class page which will contain the learning for the day. Please could I kindly request that, if possible, you acknowledge the email by 9.30am to confirm that you have seen the work that has been set for the day.

Please email work to me in any format. It could be a photograph of work that has been done on paper or in a notebook or it could be a screen shot which has then been edited. (This might be useful for some of the maths work set.)

Work can be sent to me throughout the day and I will respond with feedback as soon as possible. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any problems with any aspects of the work or indeed any other issues concerning your child’s welfare, during this difficult time, that we could help with.

You can contact me at class2@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk

Many thanks,

Mrs Nicky Morris

Merry Christmas!

I hope you enjoyed your last day Class 2.

Merry Christmas to all your families. I hope you all have a lovely time together.

See you in January for a new term!

Water bottles

Please could I ask that the water bottles the children bring into class, after Christmas, are plastic bottles that have a non-spill spout. Some children have been bringing in large, metal, flask like bottles with lids that come off completely. This has meant some very large puddles and everyone jumping when they bang onto the table!

Many thanks.

PE Kits tomorrow

Good evening,

Just to confirm that children will need their PE kits, as usual, tomorrow. We did a little bit extra on Wednesday as we were rehearsing our nativity on Monday and so didn’t have much time left for PE.
Many thanks.

Medieval Banners

Class 2 have made some lovely medieval banners. They designed them to go in ‘The Great Hall’ of a castle, ready for a royal banquet.

Well done Class 2, they look great in the classroom!

Money Games

Next week in maths, we will be exploring ‘Money’. I have shown the children the two games/resources below which they might find useful.

We haven’t been using coins and notes so much recently but if you still have some at home please could the children have a look at them.

Class 2 Topic work and writing

This term, Class 2 have been doing some great topic work on Castles and Knights. They have also been working hard on their writing. They have written letters to the character of the dragon based on the book, ‘The Paper-bag Princess’. They are currently planning their own version of the story,  ‘Into the Forest’ by Anthony Browne.

Fact Families Game

In Maths, we have been using 3 related numbers to create a fact family. Please could the children have a go at the game below. Start with numbers up to 10 and if they are feeling confident they can move onto 20, 50 or 100.

Thank you

Reading Cards

Good morning,

I hope you are all very well.

In your child’s reading record you will find a new reading card stapled into the cover. We have used these before in Class 2 and we find that they can motivate the children that are a little reluctant to read at home and reward those who do read at home.
If they have read at home and it’s been recorded in their record by an adult, when they put their book in the blue box they will get a number crossed off. For every ten reads they will receive a house point. When their reading card is full it will be saved and replaced.

It has worked well in the past and the children enjoy receiving house points for their efforts.

Parents Afternoon Times

If you have returned the Parents Afternoon form to request a time for a telephone appointment, your child will be bringing home a slip today with your time slot.
I look forward to speaking to you next week.

Many thanks,

Mrs N. Morris

Words and Sounds Pack

Good afternoon,

Yesterday, your child brought home a plastic wallet containing the ‘common exception words’ and phonic sounds that they need to learn, over time.

Please find below some additional resources to help support them with these. You will also find some resources on the previous post.

Please get in touch if you do not have access to a printer but would like any of the sheets sent home.

Many thanks,

Mrs Morris

Science Investigation

In Science, Class 2 have been exploring materials. We carried out an investigation to test the absorbency of seven different materials.

Before testing the materials we predicted what the outcome would be.
We dipped the materials in water, coloured with blue paint so we could see the liquid soaking into each material.

To make sure it was a ‘fair test’ we made each piece of material the same size and dipped them into the liquid at the same time, then waited 30 seconds.

Paul Klee Art Display

Class 2 have completed their art work producing their version of ‘Castle and Sun’ and ‘Cat and Bird’ by the artist Paul Klee.

Art – Castle and Sun pictures

In Art, we have been learning about the artist Paul Klee and his painting called ‘Castle and Sun’.

Class 2 have used this as inspiration for their own versions. They used 2D shapes, wax crayons and a paint wash to create their pictures.

Maths at Home

In Maths, we having been working on place value. Please find below some information and resources that will support your child at home.

Year 1 – Please practise counting from any number up to 100. Focus, in particular, on the numbers that change into the next tens number.

Eg, 19 – 20, 29 – 30, 39 – 40.

When counting this is a sticking point, they don’t know what comes after 19, 29, 39, 49 and so on.

Practise writing numbers from 0 – 20, forming numbers correctly. Lots of children form numbers back to front. This is completely normal for this age group.

Ask them to write the numbers out of order too.

Have a go at the ‘Helicopter Rescue’ game below and use ‘Paint the Squares’ to help with counting.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/helicopter-rescue

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares

Year 2 – Practise reading, writing and counting all the numbers from 0 to 100. You should be able to count forwards and backwards from any number.

Practise counting in steps of 2, 5, and 10. It is important you can do this for when we do multiplication. Use ‘Paint the Squares’ below to help you. Look for the patterns and think about what the numbers end in.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares

If you are fluent with 2, 5 and 10, try steps of 3.

Practise counting tens and ones to work out what number is being represented. Use ‘Place Value Basketball’ below.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/place-value-basketball

Remember, don’t worry if you find something difficult. Keep trying and you will get there in the end!
