Afternoon update – including Running Challenge

Following on from Chloe’s lambs from earlier on in the week, here’s some photos of Aggie and some of hers:

Alex and her brother and sister have made a water slide in their garden:

Zak has been testing out the bridge he made using his bike:

and camping in his garden:

George Be has sent in a picture of a robin – which is nesting in his shed. You can just make out the top of its head.

and here’s a picture of George Be playing balloon tennis and George R doing his laps around his garden:

Here are some the bridges made by Elliot, Samuel and Ellowyne.

Here are some self-portraits by Alex, Samuel and George Ba:

And, some of the fantastic work that has been sent in over the past couple of days:

Here’s the scores so far on our running challenge:

Falcons with a resounding lead! Remember to keep sending in your distances – which I will add to the total. I will reveal which house is leading again next Friday.

Some of you sent in some bike riding distances (which is absolutely fine!), but, when inputting the data, I did adjust the distances slightly to ensure they were fair along with the running distances

What is Coronavirus? – for children

The Shropshire Library Service have kindly shared a useful book for children on the coronavirus. It is illustrated by Axel Scheffler (illustrator of The Gruffalo) and helps explain the current ongoing situation in simpler terms.

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

Good Morning Brown Clee!

Today we continue to think about our Value of the half Term – Thankfulness.  We have been thinking about all the wonderful things that we have to be grateful for such as the countryside, animals, birds and sunshine.  But we also have to be thankful for our health, especially at these times, when there are so many people suffering.

There is a story in Luke, in the New Testament that retells the story of the Thankful Leper.

Prayer of the Day

Heavenly Father,
We thank you for all the people who care for our needs and the needs of others.
We pray for all who work in hospitals and doctors’ surgeries today.
Please help them in their work and keep them safe.

Teach us to show our gratitude for what we have
By caring for those around us,
And for the wonderful world in which we live.
Amen.

Today is a special day for Joshua as it is his 6th birthday so please join in and wish him a happy birthday!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOSHUA

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

It is another absolutely beautiful day – the sun is shining, birds are chirping, flowers are blossoming. There is a lot that we are missing at the moment, including our friends, but there is also a lot that we should be thankful for. So here’s a song for us to sing together to show our appreciation and wonder for the world around us. (Click the picture)

Prayer of the Day

Lord, teach me to offer you a heart of thanksgiving and praise in all my daily experiences of life. Teach me to be joyful always, to pray continually and to give thanks in all my circumstances. I accept them as Your will for my life. Amen (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

Good Morning Brown Clee!

How lovely to wake up to another beautiful Spring morning! It is so strange waking up and not going into school to meet and greet everyone, but it is lovely to see the photos and work that everyone is sending in to be shared! Thank you….as I am sure these photos help everyone to ‘keep in touch’ with their friends and classmates and reminds us that we are all still here!

Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day

Today is Earth Day 2020. What is Earth Day you may ask?  It began in 1970 (so today is the 50th anniversary!) as a unified response to an environment in crisis — oil spills, smog, rivers so polluted they literally caught fire.

On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans — 10% of the U.S. population at the time — took to the streets, college campuses and hundreds of cities to protest environmental ignorance and demand a new way forward for our planet.

The first Earth Day is credited with launching this modern environmental movement.

So today is a good day to think about our wonderful world and how precious it is.  What do you like?  Where do you like going?  What makes it so special?  And maybe most importantly of all, how can we look after it for generations to come?  What could you do today to help look after our Earth?  Could you make sure you put your litter in the bin?  Turn unnecessary lights off?  Or just watch and listen to the words in this beautiful song…

If you are interested in learning more about Earth Day here is there website: www.earthday.org

Prayer of the Day

Dear God,
Thank you for giving us our planet and all the wonderful living things in it.
Please remind us how important it is for us to take care of it so that future generations can continue to enjoy it.
Amen.

Good Morning Brown Clee!

Good morning! It has been so lovely seeing the sharing pages on class news and seeing how busy everyone is! A school is not a building but is the people, and at the moment we are not together, so by sharing photos it keeps us all in mind and brings us together virtually.

It is also so wonderful to open the curtains each morning to see a stunning blue sky and the sun shining down on the stunning Shropshire countryside. It makes me appreciate what a wonderful place we live in. Particularly relevant today as it iis World Earth Day, so maybe a thought today of how we can continue to look after this wonderful world as we move forwards.

Reflection Time

Our Value this half term is Thankfulness – and I think at this point in time it is particularly relevant.  We often take so much for granted and don’t take time to stop and reflect on how much we have to be thankful for.  So maybe today just stop for a moment and listen and watch this song by Josh Groban called ‘Thankful’.

What are you thankful for?  Here’s a short poem that might help you think of things…

Be Thankful

Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire.
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don’t know something,
for it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations,
because they give you opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for each new challenge,
because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes.
They will teach you valuable lessons.

Be thankful when you’re tired and weary,
because it means you’ve made a difference.

It’s easy to be thankful for the good things.
A life of rich fulfilment comes to those who
are also thankful for the setbacks.

Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive.
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles,
and they can become your blessings

Prayer of the Day

Dear God,
Teach us to show our gratitude for what we have
By caring for those around us,
And for the wonderful world in which we live.
Amen.

Good Morning Brown Clee!

It has been so lovely catching up with what everyone has been up to in the Easter holidays and seeing the work children did yesterday, linked to their new topics! The term’s fitness challenges have been set, and already some children have contributed to the miles…well done!

The first spelling challenge took place yesterday, and despite my practice, Maisie and Alex still beat me! More practice required!

White Rose Problems

It appears that White Rose Maths are having problems with the volume of traffic on their website this morning. Don’t worry if you can’t access the Maths at the moment, perhaps wait until later in the day and try again. I know that their IT department will be working very hard behind the scenes to rectify the situation.

Reflection of the Day

I am sure everyone is aware of the amazing fundraising superstar called Captain Tom Moore!  He is an absolute prime example of our SMART learning behaviours – such motivation and ambition, and what an amazing achievement!  He has raised over £20 MILLION so far by walking 100 times around his house at the age of 99 – what a hero!

I thought you might like to know some of his background…

Captain Tom Moore was born on April 30th in 1920. His parents and family were local builders in Keighley, Yorkshire, where he spent much of his life. He attended Keighley Grammar School as a child, and later went on to complete an apprenticeship as a Civil Engineer. But in 1940, aged just 20, his education took a pause as he was conscripted into the army to fight in World War Two.

Tom joined the 8th Battalion of The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, with whom he was sent to Cornwall to defend the coast as the threat of a German invasion loomed.

After being selected for officer training, Tom quickly rose up through the ranks to captain and in 1941, was enlisted to India. The journey to Bombay took six weeks by sea. There, Captain Tom was instructed to start a motorcycle course for his regiment, before moving onto Calcutta in a treacherous three week road trip in the the midst of the monsoon season. Later, he served and fought on the Arakan in Burma – a British colony which was invaded by the Japanese. He moved further south with his troops to Rangoon, then the capital of Burma and a major port, before the Japanese surrendered. After his overseas duties were said and done, Tom returned to the UK to become an instructor at The Armoured Fighting Vehicle School in Bovington, Dorset, where he continued to work until all tanks and troops were demobilised. But his life did not quieten down after that.

After he came out of the army Tom raced his Scott motorbike around Yorkshire and won several cups and medals. He also organised the annual reunion of his regiment for 64 years – the longest continual annual reunion in the Duke of Wellington Regiment.

If you click here you can see the video of his final lap of the house!

On the 30th April, Captain Tom Moore is 100 years old!  I wondered whether anyone would like to send him a birthday message, drawing or card?  If you do, email them to admin@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk and we will send them onto Captain Tom!

Such an amazing achievement really shows what we can do when we try, and we work together!  So there’s a little song here you might want to join in with!

TOGETHER

Prayer of the Day

Dear God,
Thank you for the school, the clubs and the family that we are part of.
Please help us to encourage and support others.
Please help us to play our parts in the teams that we are in.
Please help us to encourage unity.
Thank you.
Amen.

The summer term starts today and sadly we aren’t together in school yet. But the sun is shining and Spring is definitely settled in! Enjoy the challenges and tasks that will shortly be set by your teachers, and don’t forget to join together at 10am to have a moment of reflection.

We also have a birthday to celebrate, as yesterday was Meryn’s 9th birthday! We hope she had a lovely day and so we can all join in with a rousing HAPPY BIRTHDAY MERYN! (Slightly different variation!)

STOP PRESS: Class 3 Class Book

The class book for Class 3 this term, is ‘The Golden Acorn’ by Catherine Cooper. It is an award winning fantasy, adventure story written by a local Shropshire author. The normal practice when share reading a class book, is for the class teacher to read aloud with children following with their own copy – this encourages individual reading, promotes comprehension and supports those children who may find it trickier to read on their own.

The Golden Acorn By Catherine Cooper

Mrs Heath has worked really hard in the holidays to seek permission from the author, Catherine Cooper (a local Shropshire author), and the publisher, Infinite Ideas, to get permission to record herself reading the book and post these recordings online.  These recordings will be used in the work being set for the class over the coming weeks.  It would be SO beneficial for all Class 3 children to have their own copy of the book too.  It is available on Amazon as a FREE Ebook at the moment – and of course you could also buy it as a paperback.

On the class pages Mrs Heath has kindly shared how you can download this FREE electronic version of this book, as well as how to download free Ereading software.

If you have any difficulties doing this please contact us to ask for help – as we really want to try and enable all children to enjoy this fantastic story! (I read it in the holidays – it is an exciting fantasy adventure story – and I know the children will love it!)

Summer Term Preparation

I hope you are all well, and that you managed to get an Easter break and make the most of the fantastic weather!  We are awaiting the official announcement later today, but we feel it is highly unlikely that the school will open normally on Monday for the start of the summer term.  If it is confirmed that the current ‘lockdown’ measures will be continuing, then we will continue to provide daily classwork via the school website.

The feedback about the work the teachers set for the 2 weeks prior to the Easter break was hugely positive and supportive. We are very aware that every family will have their own commitments and challenges, so please do not feel pressured to have to do everything – a pick and mix approach is probably the best way to go!

We feel one of the most important aspects is the sharing of photos and work on the class news pages, as it allows children to keep in touch, beit virtually, with their friends by seeing what they are up to.

I will also continue to post a Reflection Time and Prayer of the Day at 10am.

We will also be posting our Calculation Policies, which we were going to explain at the Workshop for Parents – please look, as these may offer some guidance in how to help your child with any maths work.  Also, if you have any questions, please just email and ask – either to the class teacher using the class email addresses or our admin email address: admin@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk.

We are all really missing being at school and being with the children – none of us joined education to work remotely – it is the interaction, the laughs, the chats and lightbulb moments of teaching and engaging with children that was our motivation. But we know that one day we will be back in school – and we are all looking forwards to that day!  So in the meantime, please keep in touch, keep watching the website and take care and stay safe!

Ditton Prior Care Home – Letters from Pupils

Before the Easter holiday, Class 4 children had the opportunity to write letters to the residents of our local care home, where our Brown Clee Buddies normally visit weekly to share a story or a game together.  With the current situation this interaction isn’t happening, and we are missing seeing the residents.  We thought it would be nice for our children to write them letters – so they did and I have received an email from Ditton Priors Care Home thanking the children:-

” Good Morning, Thank you very much for the letters our residents love them. Keep safe and hopefully wont be long till we can see you all again :)”

Here are some of the letters that the children sent:-

Well Done Mrs Heath!

We want to say congratulations to Mrs Heath, who has been awarded ‘Teacher of the Week’ in The Week Junior, a national current affairs magazine for young people. Mollie nominated Mrs Heath for “being so much fun” and “explaining things”. What a thoughtful thing to do Mollie….I know it has put a big smile on Mrs Heath’s face today!

Good Morning Brown Clee!

Another sunny day!  We had some interesting thoughts on the THUNK from yesterday: “What’s the greatest illusion? That life should be perfect”.  Here are the thoughts…

  • There is no such thing as perfect (in my opinion). We all have different ideas about what we want from life. We might want the sun to shine everyday, but would that be perfect? What would happen to the earth if the sun shone everyday and we had no rain? We might want to never have any disagreements, but do we want all our opinions to be the same? Do we all want to look the same, wear the same clothes, think the same things? Would that be perfect? If life was perfect, would it be exciting?
  • What is perfect? As surely we can always improve what we are doing, whether it is a picture, a story, a maths problem or playing a piece of music. If we thought we were perfect at something would we then give up getting any better?
  • I think it depends on what the ‘perfect’ thing is – as everyone will have their own idea of perfect, so perfect can be different for different people.

Fantastic thinking – and thanks for sharing!

Here is the THUNK for today….from the Bible:-

And here’s a cheerful Easter song to brighten your day!

THREE DAYS TO CHANGE THE WORLD

Tuesday 7th April, 2020

Good Morning Brown Clee!

Another lovely day, and another ‘THUNK of the day’!  Yesterday’s THUNK “Is black a colour” provoked this thought from Miss Greenan:

“Black to me is a shade or a mood. We use black to represent sadness, mourning, shadows, dullness, darkness, negativity. When asked about happy colours black is rarely or never chosen. In art, black can be used to shade areas or to show night time or darkness.”

I also wondered if black is just a lack of light – so darkness?

Anyway – today’s THUNK, especially for Rosie B, who enjoys the book by Charlie Mackesey, “The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse” so much…What does this page from the book make you think?

Here’s a song to sing along to as you play/work outside in the garden!

THE SEED SONG
