Welcome to Bees Class

Fire Safety presentation

This morning the Year 3s and Year 4s had a visitor from the Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service. They found out about the role of the fire service and what happens when you call 999. They also talked about what to do if they spot a fire, how to check a smoke alarm, the important of thinking about escape routes and “Stop, drop and roll”. They have been given the tasks of checking smoke alarms at home and talking to parents about escape plans. Thank you Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service!

Welcome to our Class – We are the Bees!

Our teacher is Mrs Norman (Monday to Thursday) and Mr Harley (Friday) and we have 8 Year 4 children and 11 Year 5 children in our class. Our topic this term is the Romans.

(Class Teacher’s email: bees@brownclee.shropshire.sch.uk)

Information on our Term’s Learning:

The Vikings

English

In English, our class read will be Riddle of the Runes by Janina Ramirez. Within reading, the theme of Vikings will be explored. Our writing units this term are newspaper reports and performance poetry.

We will continue to develop our spelling knowledge and range of vocabulary as well as our understanding and awareness of grammar. We will work on our proofreading and editing skills and on maintaining the quality of our handwriting.

Maths

We will continue to develop our recall and speed of times tables. Study this term will focus on multiplication, division, fractions and decimals.

Science

This term, we will be investigating forces and magnets. We will explore the effects of forces such as friction, gravity, magnetic attraction, air resistance and water resistance.

Thematic Study

In History, we will be exploring the question ‘Were the Vikings ruthless killers or peaceful settlers?’ We will develop our chronological understanding by creating timelines of this period in history and discuss what typical Viking life was like in Britain.

In Geography, we will be investigating the question ‘Which is more devastating for Iceland: earthquakes or volcanoes?’ We will practise locating Europe, Iceland and Reykjavik on globes and atlases and explore the causes and effects of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

In DT, we will focus on frame structures, designing and making an outdoor shelter and exploring the concept of triangulation and how it can strengthen 3D structures.

In Art, our topic is storytelling through drawing, and we will be sequencing our own illustrations to tell a story, linking this to the events of the Viking landing at Lindisfarne.

Not linked to our topic, in Music we will work on our singing, listening and composing skills and exploring percussion instruments. In RSHE, our themes are aiming high, setting goals and staying positive. In RE, we will be exploring the question ‘What does it mean to be a Muslim in Britain today?’ In French, we will be learning the vocabulary for ordering food and developing our confidence speaking aloud. Our topic in Computing is photo editing. In PE this term, our topics are tag rugby (Year 5) and netball (Year 4). We will also be taking part in a daily fitness challenge. Our current PE days are Monday and Thursday.

Home Learning

  • Reading regularly, ideally daily
  • Practising times tables (verbally, written, and on Times Table Rockstars)
  • Practising spellings. Children will be set a list of 10 spellings on Spelling Shed each Friday, to practise during the week for the following Friday. The full 3&4 and 5&6 word lists are also available on Spelling Shed should your child wish to do any further practice

Links to Times Tables Rockstars and Spelling Shed can be found below. See Letter outlining homework expectations for expectations and Homework Policy for further details. Children may also like to practise by writing things down rather than using a screen.

Pencil cases, water bottles and snacks

Bees are allowed to have their own pencil cases if they wish to. These should be small enough to fit into their individual tray and contain basic equipment, such as coloured pencils, different coloured pens or highlighters. Felt tips are not required. Stationary will also be provided in the class for everyone so anything contained in their own individual pencil case is a bonus. Children may also have a water bottle in class that should be filled with water only unless the school have been notified otherwise. They may also bring in a healthy snack to eat at breaktime should they wish to.
